  1. would have to go on 60-day DL to not count on 25-man roster, but he pitched in 2013 after TJ in 2012, with pretty good numbers, so he's not hurt anymore so they can't do this. You mean 60-day DL to not count on the 40-man roster and 15 day DL for 25 man, right? Or is there a different rule for rule 5 pickups?
  2. Yeah, my guess is they hope Pittsburgh doesn't want him that bad when it comes time to return him and they send over some other minor leaguer or cash over in a trade.
  3. He would have been giving us more than the "hometown discount" to sign with the Brewers. More like the "Hometown clearance". I don't blame him for signing and I don't blame DM for not giving him the money. I just think that some combination of Francisco/Halton/Morris/Green (even Gamel could be an option) would be able to give us a .730-.750 ops for $1-2M total instead of paying someone else to come in for a tick more production that costs millions more and/or prospects in a trade. If the Brewers are still in a position for the playoffs in July they can always acquire a better 1B if all these guys bust. And if they bust, as least we have given them the chance and know it versus wondering what we have.
  4. Unless the Phillies have some serious cash problems, I don't see why they would even think about the trade.
  5. Exactly. You aren't trading Gomez unless there were trades or will be more trades of anyone making money the next two years for the Brewers. And if that is happening that means that something is happening on an ownership level.
  6. Yes, you would think they are going to still be aggressive to follow up on this move. What players on the Brewers would they like and how much do they have in their minor league system and how much of it can we drain by trading our older players.
  7. If Davis stinks up the joint (or gets injured) you still have the option of trying Gindl and then Schafer and you still could play Halton out there if needed to. I would rather gamble with the young guys then play Aoki and get the same as he did last year (as he gets older and is in his last year of contract). They could also bring in your veteran Edmunds/Kotsay to spring training to see if they have something left to provide insurance.
  8. If any GM didn't know Aoki was available, regardless if DM officially told them, then they aren't doing their job. It was pretty obvious we were making room for Davis and Aoki was on the block.
  9. Gindl has played mostly RF in the minors (530 games in RF, 175 in CF, and 47 in LF). He didn't look all that comfortable last season in LF - probably because he hasn't played it that much. I wouldn't be surprised if Gindl is the top backup in LF and RF next year, with Schafer getting a handful of starts in CF when Carlos needs a break. I assume Schafer will have the 8/9 inning defensive sub for Davis role next year.
  10. I second (or third) this. Although I was FOR trading Aoki, I would have rather waited to see if we could have had something better at the deadline. How many 4/5-types do we need battling it out for mediocrity. We did better than I thought we would. Aoki was nothing special. The only possibility of getting a better deal was to wait until the trading deadline and hope a contender was in need of specifically a corner OF that would be a leadoff batter. Then you had to hope that the contender liked Aoki. I'll take this now and be happy about it.
  11. I wouldn't even like it based on incentives. You know RR is going to play him every day even if he is batting .200 with no power all season. I would rather struggle with Halton/Francisco/Morriss/Green at 1B this season rather than sign Hart if it is going to cost two years. I don't feel that Hart is necessarily going to be close to the player he was. Obviously he won't move as well, but we don't know how his swing will be effected by his legs either.
  12. Why? When the player gets bad the Yankees can just ship the player and 80% of the contract costs to the KC Royals and add a new toy. They would still not be in the hole financially. The only problem for them is if 2-3 of the players get real bad the same year - then they might not make the playoffs (that year).
  13. If the Brewers add a veteran to the pen it has to be a lefty, right? Otherwise they might as well go the inexpensive inhouse roster - Henderson Kintzler Gorzy Hand Wooten 2 of: Figaro/Thornburg/Blazek//De Le Torre/Fiers/Burgos/Heckathorn/Olmstead They must feel Olmstead can fix his problems and be ready for the majors because they kept him on the 40 man versus other pitchers.
  14. You forgot another option. The Brewers take the money they would have spent on the first rounder and instead use it on the international draft. Didn't they give two kids $800K each? They hadn't done that in previous years. It seems to me that those two kids are our first round draft pick. Neither may ever make it, but it was no certainty the first round pick would either. So to me I don't get all wound up about losing the draft pick.
  15. Yes, but having money allows you to send money along with the player when you are ready to unload him. And these owners have a lot of money burning a hole in their pockets.
  16. I assume he must have some clubhouse presence that some teams want to add as their 25th player. Just not us, because RR will play the gritty veteran.
  17. I don't think it is anything more than the rich teams have so much media money coming in that they can afford to pay it and still have a net profit for the owner (plus additional equity as the value of the team increases). So instead of dickering over the details they just put a great offer on the table right away and get the deal done. Plus an added benefit, it forces the poor teams to pay more for players that are using his contract as a comp, so they can't compete as effectively against the Giants. In other words, if there was a salary cap, you probably don't see this contract from the Giants. So I don't think it is an "information-lag obsolete paradigm deal" - it is just "we have a bunch of money to spend" deal.
  18. My only thought is, would the Brewers get anything close to value for Braun? I don't know if teams are going to give up his true value until they see him produce for at least half a season in 2014. Plus that allows the fans ire to die down a little and make it more palatable for a team to trade for him.
  19. If they can trade Aoki+ to get a 3B, that would be even better. Move ARam over and it gives Morris his year to do something in AAA. You would have quite a few of the positions taken care of, short and long term.
  20. I think everyone that is wanting the Miller trade are really subconsciously wanting Yuni to be the SS in 2014.
  21. Isn't it more likely that at age 23 (he just turned 3+ weeks ago) he adds 1-3 MPH for the next few years?
  22. I would hope that the Brewers would platoon Halton and Morris (Francisco) at 1B. Morris (Francisco) has a pretty big split and this way neither player is feeling too much pressure at the beginning of the season. If one hits a cold streak, they are getting days off anyways and there isn't as much notice. And if one starts outplaying the other one, its easy enough to ease the one guy to more playing time. I think if you did that you could get a combined .750 OPS from the position for min.wage x 2.
  23. Now we will have to start accounting for the height of fences so that the leftfielders at Green Monster aren't getting screwed by this stat.
  24. Well it took an 87 win season to be the wildcard this year. I don't think the roster as currently comprised can be considered a legit shot at a wildcard. I think there are too many ifs. If this person performs like he did or if this person stays healthy, if this player plays like he did for those XX number of games. Can we really think that Gallardo turns it around, ARam is healthy, Braun is at least 90% of the old Braun, Gomez/Segura are as strong as last year, etc. There doesn't seem to be a lot of guys like Lucroy and Lohse where you know basically what you are going to get.
