  1. I would like to see where this is a fact. Lohse contract was $11M each year. It is just that $7M of this years contract is deferred. For example to be clean, if the Brewers trade him after the season, the trading team would pick up his 2 year and $22M contract and nothing more. This isn't ARam's contract that was truly backloaded.
  2. I'm not saying I wouldn't have went with young players, but this is an overstatement. Gonzalez is $1.75M and Yuni is $900K. So you could have saved $1.67M this year if you went with min wage minor leaguers out of the chute. With Bianchi out to begin the year, they actually did need one of the them, so you couldn't have saved that much. Who else were you referring to?
  3. I don't claim to know the arby system well, but I would bet he would say he wants $6M and he would win.
  4. I'll take 1.5 years of Grienke (and playoffs) + Segura/pitchers over Jake O/Escobar/Cain. It has just been the drafting/developing that has been subpar, especially the pitching.
  5. To my reckoning, the longer he is out the better his chances of ending up with the Brewers next year. If he comes back and is just middling at best for two months, who is going to give him a decent long-term offer? So if he ends up looking for a one year deal, maybe the Brewers get into the mix (especially if Morriss, Halton, Francisco don't force their way into the spot). Not my preferred scenario, but I could see it happening, especially if they have moved ARam and/or Weeks.
  6. No. Yeah, technically you can just non-tender and let him walk. But I assume you mean the FO has to automatically trade him this year to get something versus nothing (plus save $ too boot). I agree. If KRod and Axford aren't traded for something than they really dropped the ball.
  7. I agree with you. If we get anything to clear ARam and Weeks that would be doing pretty good in my book. It just seems to me the Brewers shouldn't be expecting quite the return as a few posts are thinking we should get. If the Brewers pulled off a trade they would have to find a 3B for 2014, so may turn around and spend all that money on a free agent 3B (don't know who is avail) or end up playing Francisco or Green. But I still like that scenario better than the current going into 2014 as we won't have the starting pitching to contend anyways.
  8. My guess is they haven't implemented the trading of draft picks to save some teams from themselves. Also I suppose a savvy "poor" team may trade away players and be terrible for a couple of years to try to acquire a bunch of picks in a couple of drafts in a row to have the talent come up at the same time. I assume the "rich" teams are probably happy with the status quo.
  9. Maybe RR told Melvin that he didn't really like Bianchi at 2B. Maybe Melvin wanted to see what Gennett could do. Regardless, Melvin probably isn't really concerned about the clock. Does Gennett really project to be an above average 2b starter? If so maybe they will lose him in 2019 then, but it probably isn't that big of a risk.
  10. i've also speculated that a player called up not to report wouldn't be drawing a major league salary for those few days, which per this, is more than $2600 a day. great opportunity for the position player to make some quick cash over a few days' time, but to the disappointment of the starting pitcher waiting in the wings. The MLB min wage is $490,000 for 2013. I assume that means they are paid $3024.69 per game (490,000/162) on the roster and not for team off days. But maybe they have some way of paying the $490,000 over all the days of the MLB calendar and players do get paid for team offdays.
  11. Catching? Lucroy and Maldanado are young and will be around for years. The only thing I think would happen is if some playoff team got desperate and really wanted Maldy. The Brewers would just have to ask for a minor league catcher back plus whatever else they get.
  12. 600 plate appearances in 2014 or 1200 for 2013-2014. So we don't want him to get 625 this year and then need only 575 next year. He has around 210 plate appearances so far in 56 games, so he is on a pace to get over 600 this year - but just barely.
  13. If Braun was in his last year or two of his contract and made noise about moving on, then yes. But that isn't the case, and I assume we are not talking something silly like the Cardinals are going to give up all their starting pitching staff for Braun.
  14. I guess I care a little that they started Scooter's clock, but I am not as optimistic that he will be good enough that we have to worry about it in three years. But I am encouraged that hopefully this means that Melvin realizes he needs to keep Weeks from vesting his option and this is one step he is taking to do just that.
  15. That is my understanding. I don't see him declining though, as he would have to be guaranteed that someone would pay him more than $14M. So he may decline if he had something in the ballpark and he just wanted out of Milwaukee. That would save the Brewers $4M.
  16. This is probably crazy talk. But if the Brewers don't develop a 3B and ARam stays moderately healthy, he could very well be playing for us in 2015. His cost is $14M for 2015, but if the Brewers cut him loose they pay him the $4M going away present. So his net cost is $10M for 2015.
  17. Gallardo is not close to a #1 type pitcher in my book. I would consider him a #2. To me if you can get the Shields package, I would take that in a second (or creatively take less and ship Weeks with him). The Brewers pitching staff may yet turn it around, but I think they lost too big of an opportunity when Gomez and Segura were batting out of their mind.
  18. I would hope that just the pitching coach gets fired with the hope that trickles down in RR that maybe he needs to be a little bit more assertive and to not be so beholden to veterans and giving them their 2nd, 3rd and 4th chances.
  19. I wouldn't call $11M each of the next two seasons as backloaded. As for the deferred part, that is strictly earned in 2013. So assuming a trade, something would be figured out between the Brewers and the other team so that they aren't prorating something to be paid out three years from now - that isn't a big deal. And, yes, in my opinion his contract has a net positive value right now, he has pitched pretty well just hasn't had any support.
  20. That would be ironic as the Brewers were one of the teams that could trade for him precisely because he wouldn't be the closer (and activate his contract clause).
  21. I don't understand the options rules. Can they really send down a veteran of multiple seasons without his permission? That would seem to me to be the easy answer, but I don't love Axford as much as RR. If his psyche is so fragile he can't handle being demoted, then how can you have him pitch in the playoffs?
  22. Your idea of a nice deal is probably different idea than what Hart thinks is a nice deal. He would have to be pretty "cheap" or short term for me to think about signing him. A hometown discount of $100K a year is more than I make a year, but isn't going to be enough for Melvin to sign him (hopefully).
  23. His job is to bring runners in, not get on base. Page 14 of the manager's handbook. We don't want anyone clogging the bases.
