yeah losing a full year for those two, and .limited innings for Thompson and MOrrison. Then add the incredible journey for Cairone is a welcome story, but from a purely cold results standpoint is not what we were expecting this time last year. That is NOT to take anything away from what he has done since New Years. And Vucinovich, Holden and Bentley - whether it is live ball, or just get acclimated to pro ball, but not quite the same step forward as we saw with pitchers in other years. Hopeful for more - maybe next year

I think every pitcher who is effective gets "over used". Starters get "over-used" pitching 5-7 innings per start if they are effective. And good reliever too. There are two sides to that - one is the overuse, which is real and even I acknowledge that now (growing up int he 80s I was of that old school "why do players need days off" mentality until a year or 2 ago). The other is hitters have more chance to see the stuff in person or on video, so they get to guess on tendencies the more you pitch. So we need to keep pitching these guys, but balance it out. And the offense is a big factor. If this was a 5-3 lead as opposed to a 3-1 deficit Pannone maybe goes longer. Not blaming the offense here, but the game is a team sport. With all that said, the trade deadline NEEDS are 1. a starting pitcher; 2. at least one high leverage reliever for the 7-8th inning; and 3. one bat who can play 3B or OF, preferably a RHH who can mash LHP. Now we will likely try to get one and get a few players who could hopefully fill in the other categories. But I also contend that the team this year as a team is great, but there is not stand out (like Yeli/Braun/Cain in 2018/2019; or Burnes/Peralta/Woody in 2021). Similar to last year, it is a whole team effort, and I wonder if one player or two really moves that needle a lot to "go all in", so while the records is what the records is, the Brewers are one of the top 3-4 teams in the league, I guess I don't feel or see this as a true top 4 team, so I'm not in favor of giving up a lot, especially with the unknown of 2027.

I really appreciate your insights @ARobsBrewCrew - that is a perspective that is good to hear as far as injury. I think some is expectation, coming into the season and expecting everyone completely healthy and then having so much competition that we have tons of pitchers perform well. But the offense has been super high across the leagues. Anyway, we can return this thread back to the transactions and the discussion on transactions. MODERATORS - feel free to pull these posts into another thread if there is more discussion on this, sorry to have "hijacked" this but that post of so many pitchers going to 60-day IL triggered me obviously.

Agree. A lot there in potential. It’s the lost year on injury, recovery or just down years. Maybe I’m just bummed from the loss to SF, and seeing Hardin’s poor line tonight. But there have’t been a big step forward by many hurlers. Owen’s and Niksch have been very nice surprises. Hardin has been good. But Letson good just limited, ditto Knoth. And still waiting for something more from Thompson, Morrison, Vucinovuch, Holden and Bentley;or big steps by Dubanewicz or Dorchies. Although Thompson had a nice start today, please stay healthy🤞
-
Wow. What a lost year for pitching. A few coming back from injury who are easing in (Knoth among others), and multiple longer term. Man losing a year of development by Meccage along with the lost years for most of the ‘25 picks is a set back. And then not being able to sign the 5th round pick.. next draft picks 1-20 need to be pitchers.

Wow. The Warbirds had exactly two players play tonight who were 20 (Ibarguen and Espinal), and the FredNats had exactly 2 players play tonight who were under 20 (19 year old Gavin Fien and Coy James). Just wild the age difference. -

When Fredericksburg’s starting pitcher (currently 24 yo) was their age (18), Antunez/Frias/Mayorquin were 12 years old 😳 -
A blow out loss to the Dodgers DSL club, yikes 😬😡 But a sweep of the Cubbies DSL clubs, alright! 😁😆 Derlin Garcia has had a very nice year in ptichin on the island. He is one of the sure bets to come stateside next season.

2026 Draftee Signing Thread
biedergb replied to Jastro's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
agree. I think the sentiment has gone from "what is this kid doing" (as I was thinking earlier), to "What the heck is Clemson thinking". As this type of precedent won't go un-noticed, and hopefully will put Clemson players at a disadvantage next year that hurts the program. I am for a college program trying to field as competitive a team as possible, and I can see them out-gunning each other in this new dog-eat-dog world of portals and NIL. BUT, to start a new precedent of out-bidding a MLB team who agreed to a deal in the draft with NIL money is either genius or insane. My stance is the latter given I wanted all these kids to join the organization. But even if they did this to a Cubs/Cards draft pick, I would have raised an eyebrow a bit. So good luck Aidan. But I hope Clemson baseball really suffers. -
2026 Draftee Signing Thread
biedergb replied to Jastro's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Yeah, that will hopefully be noticed by other MLB teams. I mean I get that they want a competitive team and don't love seeing players leave, but that is part of the game in college - you get a kid for a couple years. I was going to say, that it would ironic if other colleges did the same, and then HS players would be the "safe" picks now, if college try to outbid MLB for these 5-10 round players to keep a competitive team. But if the new CBA eliminates the HS player from being draft eligible, then maybe Clemson is the trend-setter here. I mean as a fan of this team, and wanting all picks signed, I will selfishly root for any team that plays Clemson and hope this move backfires on them big time. yeah I'm not vengeful or spiteful or anything. Good luck to Aidan, but not to Clemson 😉 -

Well, Good luck to Aidan. Historically, turning down top round money for college players has not worked out. HS players it is different, but college players/pitchers, odds are that he is most likely going to wind up in a similar or lower slot next year. -
Well the only good thing is he can hit to justify that move. ‘with him, Burke and Bitonti all LHH 1B/DH types (Fischer and Bitonti could play 3B in a pinch), one of them at least is likely to be moved. 3B will likely be one of Made, Ebel brothers, Peña

Sat. 7/25: Crow, Knoth and Broughton Toe the Rubber
biedergb replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Unbelievable that Biloxi gets back-to-back HRs in the first then no hits until a triple in the 8th! And Shuckers pitching has not been very good. Shuckers top prospect line up does have 7 walks. But they also have struck out 12 times so far. Yikes. Fischer with 2Ks. Seems like he is good for 1-2 H, and 2K every night. So much for him cutting down on the Ks. Biloxi trailing 8-4 yikes t-Rats offense comes through, Payne with 2 hits (but unfortunately 2Ks as well). T-Rats win tonight. Crow pitches 6 solid innings as Nashville ties 2-2in the night cap. -
It was Lauridsen, Underwood and Cadiz. Brock and Coil were juco and college, respectively, to make the 5 who did not sign in 2025. Also hard as a freshman in college. The potential round 1-5 guys who don’t sign play right away. The others have to compete for time. But it is surprising since those three were pretty talented kids.

biedergb replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Yes he did. -
Yerlin and even Wichrowski. Seems like both hard throwers have stalled out prospect wise. Yerlin more so. That’s a looong leash of 3 high A seasons. Not sure we have seen much improvement in that time except in very brief glimpses. Pitching wise still remains a bummer on this season - a few exceptions (Hardin, DeBerry except his last few starts, B. Owen’s and the feel good of Niksch as well as the incredible return to playing ball for Cairone to name a few). The offenses have been solid outside of Wilson (well and Appleton recently). Also this highlights how spoiled I am as a fan, since this is one among the top farm systems in all of baseball and I’m here nitpicking about what is not going great. Maybe I’m just bummed that Aidan Knaack reportedly won’t sign, and that limits the number of late round HS picks we can sign (if Knaack doesn’t sign we lose the 5th round bonus money as part of the pool).

Another pitcher who was NOT on my radar again. With many of the bigger names injured or struggling (Meccage, Thompson, The ‘25 HS draftees mostly) I have lost sight of several pitchers having good seasons. Niksch as a NDFA fits that. He is undersized - probably why he was an NDFA. But if he can become a swingman he could be another valuable option. Again any scouting reports on him from our resident scouts?

So that gives $64k extra to work with. And Knaack remaining (who should be slot right as a college pitcher). Then the big 4 HS - who hopefully we can sign at least 2 of hart, Bell, Havard, Maiorana. -
2026 Minor League Transaction Thread
biedergb replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Congrats to Brailyn! I was just looking how he really improved over the past 6 weeks. Wilson is now full, and would expect some movement to the beleaguered T-Rats clubs- could Ebel or even Encarnacion be on the move? Or Bonet or Carra?? -
I think the bottom statement also helps explain the top. I wonder if there were prospects ranks/grades for those traded. Yes, I know. But there is somewhat of a window in how this team is constructed. We have a few signed to longer term deals (Chourio, Pratt, Lara) and we have a lot of depth at multiple positions. So to say the window of Chourio/mitchell/adams/Quero doesn’t work, but a 2-3 year window where most key players are under control or signed with many prospects reminds me of 2017 and there was a 2017-2020 “window” for that.

Great insight as always, Spencer. I've been going deep on the DSL pitching staff lately so figured I'd add that layer since you covered the position players so well — fair warning, I'm no prospect guru, just a guy who's been staring at stat lines. Using your draft round framework as a guide: Alexander Mercedes (DSL Blue, L/L, 6'5", Age 17) — 5th-8th Round. Think Dorchies/Tobias/Vucinovich. You already flagged him. The stats back up the scouting — 13.0 K/9 but 7.5 BB/9, which feels right for a 17-year-old lefty at 6'5" still learning. Command is the project but the frame and stuff are hard to ignore. Santiago Martinez (DSL Gold, Age 17) — 7th-10th Round, IF Healthy On the 60-day IL so big asterisk here. But 0.77 ERA, 14.7 K/9, 2.3 BB/9 in 11 innings at 17 is a line that's hard to ignore. The 5'11" frame probably makes him a risk long-term but the stuff sounds good. And if he matures/grows that could be someone to watch. But an injury that has wiped out most of this year, although according to ARobs no surgery yet, is a big asterisk. Paul Hoff (DSL Gold, 6'5", Age 19) — 9th-11th Round 2.45 ERA and 9.5 K/9 in 25+ innings. Older than the other names so the ceiling is more depth starter than front-end projection, but the frame and consistency are both there. Could be save money “day 2” pick or an early “day 3” selection with upside. Justin Lugo (DSL Blue, 6'3") and Raymond Sarmiento (DSL Gold, 6'1", Age 18) — 12th-18th Round Lugo is a pure reliever with a 15.5 K/9 that plays anywhere if the command cleans up. Sarmiento is the quieter name I keep coming back to — most innings of any Gold starter, sub-3.00 ERA, 2.40 K/BB at 18. Consistent, repeatable, smart. Again like college arms/senior picks in “day 3”. Both seem safer bets to come stateside. Carlos Galindo (DSL Blue, 6'1", Age 18) — 15th-20th Round, late flier 38.1 innings in 5 starts at 18 is the whole scouting report. Modest K rate but the durability and strike-throwing are real organizational values at this level. The "Go to College" Tier — But Worth Watching Jordy Brache (DSL Blue, 6'4", Age 16) has a rough ERA and 15.4 BB/9, but he's 16 with a 6'4" frame and an 11.0 K/9 in pro ball. Check back in 2028. Luis Aguayo (DSL Blue, 5'10", Age 18) has the best command on the Blue staff (2.2 BB/9 in 9 starts) — the frame limits the ceiling but that kind of feel for pitching at 18 in the DSL is worth keeping an eye on. And given his age he could grow (his height may not be updated) and that could improve his ceiling, but again like a freshman going to college he could show up in 1-2 years Again just me looking throw stats and using AI to help me analyze the data. Obviously no real scouting info other than what I read here.

Yes. I would agree with this sentiment. I think the 2028-2030 window of Chourio, Miz, Turang (well 2028 at least), Made/Pena, Fischer/Burke, and some of Priester/Harrison/Henderson/Sproat with Drohan/Crow/Hardin/Letson as a core, all health permitting is the best window to mortgage the future. with the unknown of the new CBA and how it affects team control, price of free agents I see a lot of teams probably sniffing but not trading much since even a guy with control through 2027 is not helpful if there is no 2027 season (or it’s abbreviated). Plus - unless you are the Dodgers (who spend a lot yes, but also have a remarkably well run farm system), the rosters of controllable players are (ie bottom 10-15 payrolls) are mostly outperforming the top payrolls. So the incentive is mostly to keep using this formula for now. The problem is the Dodgers exist and are the biggest reason the brewers seem to have diminished odds of getting to the World Series but I don’t see one player who changes that, and to get 2 top end players means sacrificing the 2028-2030 window. And I hate the “bites at the apple” concept, but as a long suffering fan, seeing a team remain competitive for a decade is awesome. I want a World Series appearance (and victory) more than anything but agree this may not be “our year”. There is no mvp like in 2018-2019, and Miz may be a cy young candidate now but his innings limitations will hold him back, and this is not like 2021 when there were 5 elite pitchers (Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Hader, Williams). That was the year to have trade and for 2 impact bats.
