  1. Good thing LaRue was on first. Otherwise, the winning run would be in scoring position because Braun almost threw the ball out of the stadium.
  2. You must have "Steve Phillips" confused with "Steve Stone", "Steve Physioc", "Steve Lyons", "Steve Mariucci", "Steve 'Snapper' Jones", or "Stevie Nicks". http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Hey, Mota got through it alive. Whoda thunk? (Answer: None of us.)
  3. On the bright side, the inevitable meltdown comes earlier in the game, giving us a couple innings to mount a comeback.
  4. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this likely has nothing to do with the Twins being cheap. Liriano could come up now and not qualify for arbitration this off-season. Here is more from the Star Tribune's Joe Christensen: This is simply an agent overprotecting the interests of his player. In reality, there isn't anything wrong with that, but in this case, the agent is going so far as to question the Twins' ability to put the right players on the major-league roster. And he's accusing a team that's won this division more than once in recent years of putting money ahead of having the best possible team.
  5. I hope nothing comes of this. Odd fact: Hernandez and Liriano have the same agent. Not sure what to make of this.
  6. I'm not sure I'd call this an "offense".
  7. So we're in agreeance this is a focus problem?
  8. That was hilarious, though Fielder almost killed himself on that slide.
  9. Let's see...Jimenez, Rusch, Fogg, and now Bailey. We've looked like (bleep) against four of the six terrible pitchers we've faced this week. It's getting tired. Are we not preparing properly for these guys? Are the advance scouts not doing their job? Is it a lack of focus?
  10. We haven't exactly done well with favorable matchups this week. That said, a win going into the break would be huge for everyone, methinks. They're still in a good position with a ton of head-to-head with the Cubs and Cardinals. Things are okay...everyone slumps. Cripes, the Cubs lost a series to Toronto earlier this year.
  11. Let's see... Couldn't hit a terrible pitcher. Again. Blew a three-run lead in half the time it took to take it. Left the starting pitcher in too long. Made stupid mistakes in the field. Threw three wild pitches. Down one run with six outs to go. I'm cool.
  12. Wow. Dunn just hit the ball about ten feet. I'm pretty sure I've never seen that happen before.
  13. Even if this doesn't end well, props to Ned for managing aggressively and using his bench to make Dusty burn another arm.
  14. Pretty impressive lightning show going on here. I'm kind of surprised my power hasn't gone out. I'm thrilled to see Parra continue to pitch well. Can't say enough how impressed I am by him.
  15. So I decided to take advantage of this no-strings-attached MLB.TV preview they gave out for those who voted for the All-Star final vote thingie. And I can't say enough how much I hate baseball's blackout restrictions. We are getting a terrible storm right now, and my satellite just faded out (first time that's happened this spring/summer, which is amazing to me). It's about the only time I'd ever use MLB.TV to watch a Brewer game, and it's blacked out for me. I just don't understand this rule. It's beyond dumb. I was hopeful baseball would take some time to address it, but they've been too busy doing whatever it is they do. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Needless to say, I won't be buying the half-season deal, though this is admittedly pretty cool. I got Harry Kalas calling the DBacks-Phillies game while I wait the return of the Brewers on TV.
  16. My first reaction was to hold the pointer over the thread and read the first part of the original post, so it was kinda spoiled for me. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  17. One thing that I tend to think Ned's pretty terrible at is being aggressive with his in-game adjustments. The good managers will - at least every now and then - make changes pro-actively to force the hand of the opponent. Maybe it's not this way for real, but it does seem like we're waiting around for the opponent to make the first move, and then reacting to it. Ned also will occasionally make moves as if he thinks it's the ninth inning when it's not, or he'll do the opposite and make moves based on an assumption that the game is going 14 innings, instead of being aggressive and trying to make things happen right now.
  18. I have said before that I admire how he tends to protect his players, even at the expense of his own reputation. That doesn't give him a pass for being snippy with reporters, but it does mean that he's keeping his players from having to deal with the occasional overblown BS that comes from the media. I don't know that it has much to do with his actual job, but I have to think that it gives him additional cred in the clubhouse and probably helps the overall atmosphere of the place.
  19. I think the Brewers are pretty close to being where they should be. I would still like to see more progress by young hitters at the major-league level. Braun and Fielder seem to have struggled (at times) with the way they're being pitched this year. Hall and Weeks have spent much of the season looking lost at the plate. To me, this isn't just about the players, and it has to fall on the coaches when young hitters struggle to improve. I don't want even Braun and Fielder to plateau when they're this young. Weeks needs to get better, or he can't be considered a serious every day player for us before too long. Like I have said, I think Ned's getting better. But like our young hitters, he still has some work to do.
  20. 1. Ned was treating the media like crap long before that happened. The example I've most often brought up in this particular discussion happened two days before that rumor was spread. 2. No one knows how many media members have apologized. How many media members reported he was being fired? Haudricourt simply relayed the rumor that was spreading like wildfire, admitted he didn't know anything, and then did some reporting on that situation. I don't know of a single report, outside of the one from Badger Blogger, that said Ned was being fired. The only media coverage of that story was simply relaying the initial rumor, something we have to allow the media to do.
  21. 1. Bob Brenly won a World Series with Arizona, and I still think he was a terrible manager. 2. You know what happens when you assume? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  22. No, the postgame press conferences are so the reporters have a single, centralized place to ask the manager specific questions about things that happened in the game. They are televised to get people to watch and so there can be advertising revenue generated, but they were going on long before they were ever televised or put on the radio.
  23. Sure could. After all, there's nothing worse than watching people simply do their jobs, only to get Ned treating them like they're the crap that got on his shoe when he walked on the wrong part of the lawn. I am not going to apologize for seeing something wrong with a reporter asking a reasonable question about the team playing terrible defense over a stretch of games, only to get "Well, the Red Sox made a bunch of errors tonight, too" sniped back at them as if they had done something wrong. Sorry, sir. The question was about YOUR team defense. Not Boston's or Chicago's or anyone else. And there's a money shot that it came from a reporter who covers the Brewers, and therefore doesn't give a rip about the Red Sox making errors. So, yeah, bias is admitted. We all have biases, and mine happens to be - in this case - pro-media. Read my blog, however, and you'll find that I'm not blindly pro-media at all.
  24. By the way, I never did assign a grade. As much as it pains me, because I still cringe at the thought of this team in a pennant race with Yost pulling the strings, I give him a C+. It goes higher if he can find a way to figure out this bullpen thing. I'd also like to see him use Rivera more, because I have this fear that Kendall will realize his age at some point and start to wear down at a really bad time.
  25. Oh, I don't think it matters when it comes to the job he's doing. I do think it's an important part of the overall job, though. I don't feel that a major-league manager should treat the media like garbage. I see Ned as doing that, though he stops well short of guys like Hal McRae, etc., in that department. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
