  1. At the very end of Baseball Tonight (Hot Stove League edition) Steve Phillips predicted that Sheets would accept arbitration Sunday and that Kerry Wood would be signed by us for a two year 18 million dollar deal. Man, if we could make these two things happen, that's not a lot of guaranteed money. I'd think the pitching staff would be as "solidified" for the upcoming year as we could have hoped and we could turn to a big bat. If this held true, I'd offer Dunn about fifty million and get him in my lineup in a heartbeat.
  2. I'm not comfortable with our bullpen as is, but I am less comfortable with our starters and holes in our lineup. I guess I come from a line of thinking that you fix/spend on bullpen after the other three areas (starting pitching, hitting, fielding) are "solved" first. I am not saying I am right, just my opinion on kinda how I'd operate this off-season as an armchair GM.
  3. Yep, forgot about good ol' David. That gives me seven reasons why I'd not throw ten million dollars per year at a reliever this offseason. Is that bullpen the best in baseball with those seven? No. But I see a strong arguement (not that I even agree but I do see a strong arguement) it's better than our starting pitching, fielding, or hitting at this point if you break down the 25man roster into four groups.
  4. I don't think I or anyone can deny Fuentes/KRob improves the entire bullpen. I just don't think ten digits per year is a smart move for a reliever for the Crew given our market-size, arby guys, and much bigger need at starting pitching.
  5. Closer - McClung RHP - Villanueva RHP - Coffey RHP - Dillard LHP - Swindle LHP - Stetter I count six guys (plus we could always end up putting a starter (Suppan?) there depending on what we do to our rotation) that I have confidence in and we'd roster seven max. Do we really need to spend nine figures per year on a seventh guy to complete the likely bullpen?
  6. I'd rather throw in more than Hardy and get Cain if I had to, than take a lesser pitcher as the top player coming our way along with others. Let's be the pot sweeteners rather than the team getting the pot sweetened for us. I'd also try and get Billingsley for Hardy and throw in more if necessary. Not that we need to trade Hardy this off-season anyway...
  7. I guess I'd rather just keep Cameron for another year and hope a better trade solution (or even Cain improvement) presents itself in a year. Being a lefty with a good OBP is not the total answer when talking about a starting outfield position. I believe you have to bring more to the table, at least if our goal is to be/remain a playoff team. A few years ago, DeJasus would be fine though. If we want to win ninety plus? Maybe not...

  11. There's a reason the Royals wanted Co Co, and it wasn't to put DeJesus and his lack of power at a corner outfield position. So if the Royals don't want you as a starter.........................?

  15. Frankly, these were the type of answers I was hoping for. I somehow get bothered by posts/threads about signing/trading for third basemen that seem like more than a one year stopgap. I think at worse, he our starter at third in 2010.
  16. What do you guys think? With so many here thinking Gamel is not the answer at third, or at least thinking it's a HUGE question, should we deal him now while at least a few teams likely think/know he can play third just fine.
  17. Eh, I'd pass on that trade, but I'd be in the minority. We may get "solid" players, but they get the two highest ceiling guys in the deal. If Rickie figures it out this year (I know, I know) and Billy produces 25-90 hr-rbi, the solidness we gain in the deal would look pretty bad.
  18. I realize we had coaching/front office holes to fill, but it seems to me that by this time last year, we had Kendall, Mota, and maybe even Torres added. I may be off on this and there have not been lots of players switching teams yet. Still, I read about lots of other teams interest in other guys and all I hear about the Brewers is something to the effect of "Milwaukee is holding out a very tiny hope that Sabathia might still consider them". I really hope we don't let players we'd be interested in move to other teams all because of the 1 percent chance Sabathia returns. Doug I believe does his best work early in the off-seasons and I hope he's not handicapping himself right now.
  19. That's a good way of spelling it out Ry Dogg, though the challenge is to find enough McClung-types to be able to afford a Sabathia for a market like us.
  20. I'd be on board with trading Hall for any pitcher that stands a fairly decent shot of helping us next year, provided we are not adding much salary. So sign me up for a Robertson deal and maybe a Robertson/Inge for Hall/Suppan would work for both sides?
  21. There are supposedly rumors in the NY media about Cano interesting the Dodgers and NY wanting Kemp for him. As much of a joke as I hope this is, if LAD are willing to give up anything near that for Cano, I'd do my best to ship them Weeks and take their best offer.
  22. I like the idea of getting Cano and Hughes for something like Cameron and Lucroy. Rather than move Rickie to center though, I think I'd try and send him somewhere for pitching. I guess we'd have a bit of a hole at center then though, so the off-season would not be done. But the pitching staff with Hughes and whatever the return is for Rickie would seem to be enough to give a go to. I actually like the idea of going after Garland too and maybe Penney or Sheets if it could be for a shorter term deal. Lots of jumbled thoughts I guess.
  23. I have no interest in giving up any talent for a third baseman when it seems likely that Gamel or Green will effectively man the spot in 2010 at the latest. Seems like we have a need for an inexpensive stop gap at third and nothing more at this point.
  24. I guess I am thinking that Cabrera and say Fuentes (I am not advocating signing him but just throwing his name out as someone that maybe would accept a 4 year deal at 8-10 per) would be better than Cameron. Again, just throwing in Fuentes the dollars essentially the same for this year. I also realize that Cameron is a guy we are on the hook for for only one year while John Doe (Fuentes in this case) would be likely for multi-years. Still, I think if we can get someone like Cabrera and use the savings on a pitcher, I would think we'd be better off.
