  1. I think Gamel's going to prove he needs to play everyday at third, thus the Hall/Counsell option will look just fine to me.
  2. I just hope we don't empty the cupboard by giving up a package of Lawrie, Escobar, and Jeffress for a rental. All of a sudden, our minor league system will be pretty empty.
  3. What about McGowan from Tornonto. I know he's hurt right now, but once he's almost ready to give it a shot again, he might be a good semi-buy-low option. Not sure what they'd want from us at this point.
  4. Is it too early for a thread on this? My gut tells me that we'd be looking at a top notch starter if we make any deal. Looks like Toronto might not be selling Halladay afterall if they keep this up. San Diego (Peavey) is improved, but I have to believe they'd deal him for the right package. Who are some other names we should be keeping an eye on. Of the top notch starters, these are the only two I can really recall being mentioned around these parts for the past year.
  5. I'm wondering if something is going on with Billy. Only because Counsell is starting today AND Gamel is coming up. Not that Counsell wasn't due for a start at third anyway.
  6. I agree. I'd give Nelson and Duffy until June 1st to make the most of their limited opportunities or bring Iribarren and Catalanatto up together at that time. Iribarren definitely looks like he'll be spending the next few/several years in Milwaukee as a utility guy anyway. If he's ready and an improvement now, no sense in delaying.
  7. I'd maybe do it for Swindle, but not for Stetter. We theoretically could have signed him a couple months ago if we wanted too (though I admit Boston seems to get these types of guys as free agents, not us).
  8. I think it's pretty sad that, because of how poorly Nelson has produced, people are sticking up for the "decent job" Duffy is doing and thinking he's almost earned his spot for the year. But I am probably reading too much into some post tones (a common message board mistake).
  9. Buster Olney just speculating, but these guys hate bringing up teams like Milwaukee in trade rumors, so sometimes there MIGHT be a LITTLE more to it. Anyway, it's in this link after the first story. http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4157479&name=olney_buster&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fespn%2fblog%2findex%3fentryID%3d4157479%26name%3dolney_buster
  10. Yeah, I guess Hardy/Weeks/Braun/Yo maybe could be thrown in that category. And as long as we can resign Yo to add to Braun, I am pretty sure we don't need to panic about your last sentence. We should be able to deal the rest of them for plenty of talent to step in and help those two out and keep us competing for the playoffs pretty regularly.
  11. As far as three rookies maybe starting, it'd be interesting to know in a year what the offensive productions of Gamel-Escobar-Salome vs. Hall-Hardy-Kendall would be. We no doubt take a hit at C and 3B defensively though too, but we'd save a lot of money and probably add two nice arms to hopefully offset that.
  12. One thing I have noticed Doug doing is going with veterans about one year longer than we anticipate. I remember thinking Fielder would be up a year before and Overbay traded a year before, which didn't happen. I recall Hart having to wait longer than I'd anticipated. I think Gamel spends this entire year in AAA when most of us could pencil him in as a starter at 3B by now. I think Doug really doesn't want to put rookies in the mix as starters unless he's absolutely positive they'll be an upgrade (given we are basically a contending team). With that in mind, I'd pretty much guarantee Cam is offered arby if he keeps anything close to this up. I also think Kendall is resigned and we have somewhat of a three player battle for the two catching spots. Do we have an option on Looper's contract?
  13. Not bad Brian. Not bad.
  14. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/05/yankees-dfa-eric-hacker.html Anybody think we should dabble here?
  15. Just wondering what is going on with him. Is he coming back from an injury or just really, really cold at the plate. I had hoped he could be Corey Hart minus his speed as far as production (.280-.300 BA and 20-30 HR's). Hopefully he gets past his current .140 batting average.
  16. I agree with the above. It's excellent that Billy is playing so well that we really don't need Gamel as a starter and thus can keep him in AAA. The thing I'm wondering is what kind of trade value Billy has if his name gets thrown around closer to the deadline.
  17. I am guessing, based on his start, that they'd be asking for Braun. Enough said. Just for fun to think of a package they'd be asking for, you'd probably have to give them Escobar/Gamel/Lawrie/Jeffress and they still would turn us down.
  18. I believe our best case scenario might be to get actual value for Billy after the season. If he can put up a line like .280, 25, 80 I am guessing we could get a decent starting pitcher. This is assuming Gamel proves to management he's ready defensively at 3B.
  19. I am not sure that we can trade Stetter at this point. Maybe if Swindle proves he can be an above average, we'd be able to. But the fact that conventional wisdom has most teams with two lefties in their bullpen makes me think a contending team like ours should have at least one good one. Stetter at this point is all we have to offer in that capacity unless you believe Swindle is ready to be the guy.
  20. Nice that Carlos got to touch all the bases too. Who knows on him though longer term? I personally saw Rivera the same way I see Corporan right now. As a guy that was lucky to get a chance in the big leagues but a guy that would only get a cup of coffee in the majors. Now, it looks like Rivera could well have a ten year big league career.
  21. Do you guys agree with Bill that Corporan goes in when Manny is done (likely after the 6th)? I really want to see him get his chance today...
  22. That's a lot of double negatives guys. Hard for me to understand the points, respectfully.
  23. Hmmm. Not sure. I actually haven't been looking at stats even at AA yet (just AAA thus far). I'd assume Jeffress maybe would be a mid-season call up if he does well the first half of the year so he gets some experience at AAA. Other than pitching, and if Gamel/Escobar/etc. are all allowed to play the full year save September in AAA, I'd imagine we keep all the positional guys where they are at provided no big injuries occur.
