  1. I hate to be condescending, but are you kidding me? When Mr. Burns needed him to step up against Shelbyville Nuclear Power Plant in the championship game, he wouldn't stop his childish rebellion and shave his sideburns. Like any good manager, Burns had no decision but to suspend the rebellious Mattingly, else face a rebellion from the team. It's amazing how people forget these little episodes when somebody is a Yankee.
  2. To answer your question, no. Steve Braun is. He's hitting a cool .125/.238/.170/.408 this season! I really want Komatsu to succeed, just as many here do. That K/BB ratio just keeps getting better every day (well, not today, actually).
  3. That's really unfortunate. I live in an apartment complex with tons of drop-kick dogs whose owners never taught to be quiet. It's really amazing how some people can let their dogs bark like that and be completely clueless about the people around them. We just got a tri-color Miniature Australian Shepherd (10 weeks), and I smile smugly when he meets a yip dog and is largely silent. Of course, I don't expect that to continue as he ages, but I'll soak it in while it lasts.
  4. The Cubs are comical. The Padres had runners on second and third with one out and the batter hit a grounder to third. The runners had gone and the runner on second advanced to third while the runner who broke for home was tagged out in a rundown. After tagging the runner out, Koyie Hill wandered into the center of the infield and the runner at third broke for home. He scored. Epic Cubs Fail.
  5. Here are the rules: >2,000 PA's. That is all. Here are a couple possibilities: Bill Bergen, C: 1901 - 1911 .170/.194/.201/.395 in 3,228 plate appearances. Career OPS+ of 21. Denny Hocking, UTIL, 1993 - 2005 .254/.310/.344/.654 in 2,632 plate appearances. Career OPS+ of 69. Juan Castro, IF, 1995 - 2010 .228/.268/.327/.595 in 2,834 plate appearances. Career OPS+ of 55.
  6. Mmm...mulling... Unless they're trying to make a point, they'll probably just option down McClendon. At this point, I'm really really hoping to see Gomez start next season in AAA.
  7. We don't need no defense! That "double" by Pujols just about has to be changed into an error. If that's not ruled an error, I really don't know what is...
  8. An error? They're just discriminating because Prince is big-boned.
  9. It's a life changing diagnosis. You never know what goes through his mind, but I'm guessing both Covey and his family feel that he is better off staying close to home while he learns to live with diabetes. Unfortunate as it is, this does lower Covey's stock. Hopefully he can work through this and pitch like a stud at San Diego.
  10. C: Johnny Bench 1B: Lou Gehrig 2B: Rogers Hornsby SS: Honus Wagner 3B: Mike Schmidt OF: Babe Ruth OF: Barry Bonds OF: Hank Aaron
  11. Weak. It'll be interesting to hear the full story here. I really thought Covey would be willing to sign for <$2.5MM. If that's the case, this is pretty disappointing.
  12. I missed the Great Taste of the Midwest, although given the lineup, it was probably a great time. I've never been to such an event (before you burn me, I just turned 21 3 months ago). From BeerAdvocate, here are a few other festivals coming up. Obviously none are as good as the Great Taste of the Midwest, but one might be worth checking out. Does anybody know anything about what specific beers are at these fests (does NG bring just a couple, or would they bring the Gueuze and Kriek, etc?) 08/28/10 Potosi Brewfest, Potosi http://www.potosibrewery....ts_detail.cfm?eventID=16 09/11/10 Thirsty Troll Brewfest, Mount Horeb http://www.trollway.com/productlist.asp?cat=85 09/17/10 Great Lakes Brewfest, Racine http://www.greatlakesbrew...wers-attending-2010.html As for us Iowans (does this need to be plural?), looks like the Festival of Iowa Beers in Amana on September 5th is all there is in the near future. I grabbed a pretty decent staff at Woodman's last weekend for a northwoods trip: Dogfish 90 Minute: Awesome IIPA. Totally worth $9.49 per four pack. Bear Republic Republic Hop Rod Rye: $1.65 for a single. Another very good pickup. Lagunitas Imperial Stout: $3.99 for a 22oz bottle. Not a good Impy. Very rough around the edges, but not good enough in the first place to age. Lagunitas IPA: $1.65 single. Solid sessionable IPA. FFF Gumballhead: $1.65 single. Very good change of pace from my typical New Glarus/German Hefe wheat lineup. I could easily knock down a sixer of these on a hot day.
  13. ^ I agree with you that the defense is certainly not as much to blame as we make it seem, but a terrible defense can definitely make a pretty decent pitching staff look bad. The difference between the best and worst team in the league in terms of UZR is typically around 150 runs, so even if we halve that, we're looking at a half of a run per game. So poor defense can pretty easily bump a 4.50 RA to a 5.00 RA. That said, when comparing to an average defense, rather than an elite one, the Brewers' defense has probably only tacked on an additional .15 - .25 runs per game. They've certainly hurt the pitching staff, but it is wrong to say that defense has made an okay staff into one that looks terrible. I think it's more accurate to say that it's made a bad staff look terrible.
  14. Sure they can, but if one has an understanding of statistics, they can quickly be dismissed as asinine. Here's my classic example: First, regress 1930's life expectancy with cabbage consumption. You'll surely get a model where as cabbage consumption increases, life expectancy decreases. Cabbage must be killing them, right? It doesn't take a genius to see that this is an idiotic conclusion (they ate cabbage because they were poor, and they had a shorter life expectancy because they were poor, not because they ate too much cabbage!). My little rant above isn't really baseball related, but it shows that yes, you can pretty much say anything with statistics. However, just because you can say anything doesn't make it plausible.
  15. Good players help their teams win games, bad players don't. This whole "he's not a winner" argument has been made about so many players that it's laughable. Last year A-rod wasn't a winner. Now he's got that clutch instinct. Bill Hall is one player. There are 25 players on a roster. If you put Bill Hall on the Yankees, they will still be dominant. If you put him on the Royals, they will still suck. As for Bush, it's not that he doesn't have some killer instinct for winning, or that he isn't a grinder, or that he can't pitch on a winning team. He just isn't very good anymore.
  16. Awesome play by Cain. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite players.
  17. Hopefully Dickerson gets the start tonight. I'm assuming he will. It will be fun to get a better idea of what we have in him, and if a Braun-Cain-Hart (Dickerson) outfield is the way to go for the next couple years. If Cain can continue to mash, that will be a really solid offensive outfield, and if Cain can continue to fly around the outfield, it might be a tolerable defensive one as well (and a pretty solid one when both Dickerson and Cain are in the OF).
  18. EDR - good call on bringing beer discussion back to the beer thread. As I'm stuck in Iowa right now, my beer choices are pretty dismal. However, I did raid HyVee's singles selection and grabbed some really nice beers for $1.50 each, including Unibroue La Fin du Monde, Trois Pistoles, Don de Dieu, and Maudite: All very good, but La Fin du Monde and Trois Pistoles were my favorites. Franziskaner & Weihenstephaner Hefeweizens: Haven't had the Franziskaner yet, but the Weihenstephaner just knocked Dancing Man to second place on my favorite wheats list. Rogue Mocha Porter: A good porter, although I was a bit disappointed (this stuff retails for $12.99/6 around here) Sprecher Impy Stout: A decent impy from a decent brewer. At $1.50 for a 16 oz. bottle, I really can't complain.
  19. Did anybody see Carpenter's little tantrum about Brendan Ryan's glove last night? Not to mention Ryan's positioning on a single in the 7th inning... Go Reds Go.
  20. I was considering NorCal as part of the pacific NW, but I'll take your word on that. We could probably argue about SoCal vs. PacNW vs. Midwest 'til the cows come home, and I don't think anybody would change their minds. If you ever have the chance, I would advise you seek out some brews from Bell's and Founders, particularly Bell's Kalamazoo Stout and Two Hearted Ale and Founders' Breakfast Stout. Edit: I was just on BeerAdvocate and came upon this thread debating the best beer states. http://beeradvocate.com/forum/read/2951546 For the most part, it's Michigan vs. Oregon, not including California due to sheer size. Not really too surprising.
  21. Ahh. Rusty Kuntz, the greatest .236 hitter of all time. http://blogzarro.com/images/kuntz.jpg Oh, and who could forget everybody's favorite 23-game winner from 1884: http://www.baseball-refer...layers/b/burnsdi01.shtml
  22. Great route to the ball and great speed by Lo. This guy can definitely be a plus CF.
  23. Melvin, give them Gallardo, Braun, Fielder, Escobar, Lawrie, and Cain. The Brewers need this guy.
  24. Really Ken? (/blue) Gallardo is clearly a much better option to play outfield (blue/)
