  1. You can't really teach patience or "eye at the plate". You can develop a guy in to being better at hitting the ball. The hard part is out of the way.
  2. I've been a huge fan of piggy backing or something like it in the majors for a while. I still can't believe no one has tried it yet. This is another reason I'm not really concerned about the Brewers developing pitching. The actual development is a crapshoot and then when you throw in injuries, it's totally unpredictable.
  3. HBP totals mean nothing really. There's no reason for a batter to crowd the plate if he's not comfortable there.
  4. I'm not sure weight (or lack thereof) is the greatest metric for evaluating a pitching prospect... It's gospel for some. There's an organization that I read about (I can't remember who it was) who told their scouts not to bother looking at pitchers under 6'2". I understand why size is exciting but dismissing a pitcher because he's "short" is just stupid.
  5. Can we blame attempting to conceive for his horrible year last year too?
  6. Is this the first time Carter has been a regular starter? I know he had a big year a few years ago but I thought he was splitting 1B with Jon Singleton. If this is his first time as a regular starter maybe this is really who he is. If that is the case I still don't know if you keep him or trade him.
  7. The incredibly condescending University of Phoenix commercial that says you're stupid and lazy if you don't have a degree and you're stupid if you don't hire someone with a degree.
  8. I know i am late to this thread, but my answer would be that i was BEGGING the brewers to pick up Matt Latos. everyone on here told me i was crazy because the brewers already had their rotation. My logic was that you could start jungmann at triple A or put Garza in the pen if latos was pitching well and then flip him and give the spot to whoever is performing the best in the minors. The brewers were one of the 6 teams that went and watched him workout and he signed with the white sox for 1 year 3 million, or, in other words, nothing. Currently he has a 1.84 era in five starts and has already been worth 1.1 WAR. for 3 million... at the deadline he could definitely be trade for a nice minor leaguer or 2. so for about 1.5 million worth of performance you would be able to 'buy' a contending teams top 5 prospect. Most people were against Latos because of some "character issues" of which I've never heard any actual issues before or since.
  9. Word is that there will be a bunch of PED suspensions coming out soon and they all tested positive for the same thing. Some might say that this means testing is working or that there is some new Biogenisis type scandal out there. Both are reasonable but if you have a bunch of random, no-name players testing positive for the same (in this case, really old school) substance it certainly brings up the possibility that there is some tainted supplement out there like the players have been saying.
  10. As soon as I saw the title I knew who started the thread. No. He's toast and has been for a couple years.
  11. I've been to Miller Park 4 or 5 times since they put this thing in and I still have no clue where it even is. But I have zero interest in actually seeing it so that's probably why.
  12. For as good as Freeman's numbers were before he came to Milwaukee, he was absolutely brutal here.
  13. To the letter of the law, probably the right call. But that play was not what the rule is trying to prevent. And it shouldn't have taken as long as it did to get it right.
  14. It actually makes sense that MiLB loosened the reins on this issue a few years ago. Given the horrific scheduling and travel at the upper levels, the ups and downs from the major league roster, injury issues regardless of nature/severity, organizations would be what, releasing their third catchers across all levels, and scrambling to sign them as needed in a pinch, without the flexibility. Granted, there should be limits on how long healthy players can be kept on a "taxi squad" basis. There's so much moving around between levels, rehab assignments, doubleheaders, and travel and since the goal of teams really isn't to win games it would just make sense to me that teams should be able to have as many guys as they want on the roster but only a certain number active per game.
  15. Any stat gurus out there know how many times in MLB history a starting pitcher has gone deep enough into a game to win and won without a single K? I can't imagine it is too many. I don't think that is all that rare. I wouldn't think so either. Especially when you go back to the day where everyone was a slap hitter.
  16. Hill clearly slid past the bag. Why isn't that a double play?
  17. Why does MILB even have roster limits/rules when you can easily just get around them?
  18. His walk rate is fine. But when you can only hit .200 it kills your OBP. Last year his OBP was .307 and it's .313 for his career. We're talking Segura level OBP.
  19. I imagine the value of Carter to other teams is all over the pace. He has big time power but his OBP has been atrocious. And even if he maintains a decent OBP through this trade deadline or even next year what are teams going to give up for one year or a half season of a 30 year old who only recently has shown OBP skills. I was not a fan of the Lind return and he at least had a track record of high OBP & decent SLUG. I can't see Carter bringing back anything more unless he greatly increases his OBP.
  20. OBP always has value regardless of batting average. Factor in his defensive versatility and he has a place on the 25 man. I posted this in an in game thread but his "approach" is to just not swing until he gets to 2 strikes. I'm surprised that pitchers don't just pound him with strikes. Maybe if they start to do that he'll actually swing and get his average over .200.
  21. Cappy is starting. They've talked about having him on the team because he can start if needed. Thornburg hasn't been a starter in what, 3 or 4 years? They're not going to put him in the rotation in the middle of the season.
  22. Outside of St. Louis, developing starting pitching is a crapshoot. I'm not more or less concerned than I was before the season started.
