  1. Wow. I haven't been paying super close attention to it but every singe time the batter called and was granted time after Davies started his delivery. I just assumed they were close but none of those were close.
  2. Sedar gave him a late stop but he wasn't paying attention. Then Marte bobbled the ball and he would have scored anyway.
  3. This is random minor leagues new but worth posting anyway. The Oklahoma City Dodgers and Iowa Cubs played a 19 inning game yesterday. And then played the second game of their doubleheader.
  4. He at least has a disgusted look on his face. Ron wouldn't care and Macha would be napping in the corner of the dugout.
  5. Would having Greinke on this team have taken them to the playoffs last year? Maybe, but probably not. Would having Greinke on this team have taken them to the playoffs this year? No. Would having Greinke on this team have taken them to the playoffs next year? Almost certainly not. Maybe you could make a case for 2017 and beyond but who knows how good or healthy he will be then. I love Zach and wish he was still a Brewer but he single-handedly could not make this team a contender. So no, he shouldn't have been kept.
  6. So a month and a half after posting this, here is where things stand: I went in dressed business casual, believe anything more would have been overdressed as I was the only person in that office wearing pants and sleeves, and asked about the job. They gave me an application and filled out my contact info and such and got to the back of the sheet where they asked for my work history. I asked if they wanted me to fill it out because I had my resume with me. They said I needed to fill it out so I copied all the information that I had just spent the whole morning typing up into the tiny spaces on the sheet. When I finished, they looked it over and asked me a few questions and told me some things about the job. They seemed genuinely interested and while talking said "We will probably start you out at..." and then proceeded to look at my salary history and gave me a number that was higher than the starting salary in the job posting which seemed like a good sign to me. They said they would call me later in the week to set something up. I went in on Monday and didn't hear from them the rest of the week. I called the following Monday and they seemed upset that I called but asked if I could come in on Friday. My interview went great. They showed me around the place. It seemed like we did more chatting than actual "interviewing" and I asked lots of questions about the job and the company. They said they would call me next week and I felt good about it, but I feel good about every interview. A week goes by and I don't hear from them. I finally call them Wednesday the week after they said they would call me. They tell me they've been very busy and haven't had any time to think about it. Also, one of the people who is involved in the hiring process is on vacation on this week and next so they will call me on Monday (1 and a half weeks from now) when she gets back and included the word promise. Well that Monday comes around and guess what? No call. I figured it's a Monday, things got busy, I'll call on Tuesday. I call on Tuesday and they tell me they are very interested in me, they want to bring me on board, they're very busy and need the help. Great. But they also say they need to speak with their accountant (who is very busy) because they need to "get some things in order" before they bring someone else on. Give us a few days they say and we'll get back to you. The last time I spoke with them was August 17. They are a very successful business, been in business for over 30 years. My aunt does a lot of business with them and has said they are usually very slow with things because they have so much work. They have a two person office staff. I can somewhat understand what is taking so long but it also sort of feels like I am getting the run around. If you don't want me, just tell me. I'll be upset but I can move on then. I'm sure some of you might be wondering why I would want to work at a place like this but I hate my current job, I can pretty much make my own work schedule, and I would actually being doing something I enjoy for a change. I was thinking about this a few weeks ago but I have basically been in a continuous 7 year job hunt since I finished college. My only real big boy, grown up job I had lasted all of 4.5 months before I was laid off. So I wish I could say that I'm used to dealing with this type of crap but I'm not. And it doesn't get any less frustrating.
  7. It's true that relievers get paid for saves which really confuses me why small market teams, especially losing ones, give saves to one guy. If Krod wasn't on the team would it not make more sense for Doug or Mark to tell Craig not to have a set closer and rotate through Jeffress, Smith, Knebel, etc. pitching the 9th to keep their saves and therefore arbitration years cheaper?
  8. How many vets did the Cubs sign the last few years to one year deals and then flip at the deadline for prospects? A few. There is pretty much zero risk to do so. I'd imagine a healthy Denard Span playing to his norms plus Wily Peralta or Krod could bring back a nice prospect and change in July 2016.
  9. Newsflash human beings have emotions! Oh yah sure...but in all my time playing baseball I very rarely saw any kid start slamming equipment on the field...and at that age never. Sure in the dugout, but that is a lot different...and if the coach caught you doing that you made good friends with the bench really quick. I can't even imagine what would happen if I slammed something on the field. These kids bahavior is horrible and the coaches do nothing about it. Actually they typically comfort the kids afterwards. When I was playing at the age roughly 15 years ago everyone did it, myself included, and coaches rarely ever said anything. I don't remember it happening when I played in high school and the high school kids I coach now don't do it. I think it's probably just part of being that age.
  10. Closers are incredibly overrated. Sure there's some pressure when you have a 1 run lead but any reliever who can't consistently get through an inning without giving up a 2 or 3 run lead doesn't deserve to be in the majors anyway.
  11. Well many posters here think steroids = despicable piece of human garbage, so that shouldn't be a surprise.
  12. Atlanta just acquired 4 or 5 years of Hector Oliva. I suppose they might be interested in Olt but they went hard after Oliva in the offseason and made that ridiculous trade to get him at the deadline.
  13. A 1-year deal never hurt anyone.
  14. This was done up until 1968; April rosters were set at 28. Going back to the 1950s and earlier, I believe April rosters were even larger. I did not know that. Neither did I. So, will Mike Olt be a September callup?
  15. April-May 2013. This is the only time his bat has shown to be anything other than average to below average. We can keep saying things like he's young and could get better all we want but he's had 3.5 years to get better and just hasn't. His approach at the plate is atrocious and he has shown no signs that he's willing to change. He's an adequate major league player and is just a placeholder until Arcia is ready. I can easily see him being nontendered after 2016.
  16. Watched the Blue Jays today since they were the free game of the day. What a fun team. It was like watching a beer league softball team. They hit 4 HR and at least 4 other balls to the warning track.
  17. Ya, if Segura is told he's going to be a utility player because of a rookie he's going to demand a trade immediately. Plus his D isn't all that great and his bat is pretty bad. When Arcia is ready Segura should just be gone by trade or release.
  18. Melvin does have a problem with the call ups. He knows he is in the minority, so He fights the unlimited roster by trying to get teams to have a set 30 players for each game. He believes that all season long teams play with a 25 man roster and it's absurd to have unlimited rosters. Basketball and football don't allow expanded rosters. I think his problem is now that he's in Milwaukee he has a budget to worry about and he can't afford to pay a bunch of guys to sit the bench for a month, get 1 ab a week, or pinch run. I do agree that it is silly that the roster size increases for the last month of the season. If anything, I think it should increase right after spring training since you have starters that can't go 7 innings yet and with rainouts you get multiple doubleheaders.
  19. And Addison Reed.
  20. Except comparing pro sports to an office job is like comparing apples to coconuts. Pro sports is entertainment. I don't have walk up music when I go to my desk. There are not video boards around my office to keep onlookers distracted between calls. We don't have mascots race around the office 2/3rds of the way through the day. We also don't do this at the end of a good day. If my memory is correct, the Giants held a grudge for a long time over that fun celebration, throwing at Fielder and making negative comments about it "not being a professional way" to celebrate a walk off win, as if it was done to disrespect the Giants vs simply having some fun. That is such a prime example of the nonsense of these silly codes way to many in baseball have. Supposedly having fun after a walk off homer is bad, but intentionally throwing a baseball at batters multiple times is just an acceptable part of the game. The Giants threw at Fielder in the Spring Training opener the spring after that. That's all you need to know about how stupid it is.
  21. Honestly it sounds like he was a corporate yes man so I bet the owners loved him. I got the impression it is an ownership problem. That's what I got from it too. Jack was just doing the bidding of his corporate overlords. That's exactly what they wanted so he got rewarded for it.
  22. Is that a fact? A serious question. I don't know if there is a way to measure it or not exactly (the part about running into boneheaded outs vs. taking an extra base). I know there are some baserunning metrics and I'm not sure how Gomez rates by them. I will say though, each extra base doesn't just equally cancel out each time getting tagged out on the bases. An extra base is nice but an unforced out 90% of the time not a good thing.
  23. You mean Austin Jackson... I would gladly take Alex Jackson the prospect! I for the life of me couldn't remember his first name. I kept thinking it was Alex so I looked it up and found out it was Austin. I then came here to post and still wrote Alex. Total brain shart.
  24. Another thing is that I don't hear the complaints when it comes from a pitcher. If he runs around pumping a fist or stares down a batter after a K, he gets a free pass for just being "an emotional pitcher." And I'm ok with it, too. But if a batter takes a look for 1 second on a jack before getting out of the box, that's so unsportsmanlike apparently. Double standard. If you're a rookie pitcher and you do it, your opponent might take offense to it.
