  1. I peaked at a +1.8, so perhaps what worked well for me could work for you. In my college years I would go to the Moorland golf center (by The Ridge theater). I would hit off range mats so that directly behind me were the windows of the shop. I treated them as a mirror to judge my take back. I wanted my club at waist high to be pointing straight back with the clubface pointing to the sky. From there my goal was to continue rotating my body while simply flipping my hands to shoulder high
  2. that's over the course of 162 games. over the course of 30, 40, etc, it's much more possible to have streaks. Could use a win today followed by 4 of 6 at home. That would put us at 7-10 and withing striking distance of .500 by May 1
  3. why couldn't they come back? Baseball is a game of streaks. Most teams will play roughly 70-80% of their schedule around .500. What separates the playoff teams from last place is the streaks. If we have no more stretches where we lost 8 of 9 games the rest of the year, but we have a couple where we win 6 of 7, we'll do fine. I don't recall us having a really bad streak last year. In 2011 we had the unbelievable 30 game stretch. It's early, the history for our relievers says most should be okay, and our rotation should be pretty good. Lohse has been better than expected, Yo worse, Estrada on par, Peralta better, and Fiers disappointing.
  4. thus far they've been more fun to watch than during the Macha years. Those are the only 2 years of my life when I gave up on watching games. But it's also early and I'll need to see more signs of life. We need our pitching to become competent, and our offense to score some runs.
  5. Nick Ramirez off to a good start in Brevard County as he tries to have a similar jump into prospect status as Hunter Morris last year.
  6. What about his other years as pitching coach? 2011? Just my usual response in that the season's really long and there's no need to panic. It's frustrating that this is longer than any bad streak we had last year, but this team is a shell of the team it will be for 2/3rds of the season.
  7. Bombers, fights happen every week? You watching the California penal league? There's maybe 5 fights per year in baseball. Season is about 27 weeks long, that's not every week.
  8. I once called into the XM afternoon radio show and mentioned that MLB needs to expand to 26 players for interleague play. My reasoning that the AL clubs might want a pitcher or bench player while NL clubs might want to call up a AA/AAA hitter to be a temporary extra legit bat. Rosters are constructed in different ways in the leagues, and it would give roster flexibility. I think Bowden's response might have been "uh, I don't think that's necessary. Thanks for the call"
  9. Given his speed, I don't mind Gomez trying to bunt. But I do hate that he's such an awful bunter that its basically giving the pitcher a free strike. I wish he were an adequate bunter just to have another tool
  10. I guess I don't get the Morris service clock thing. I mean, I'm not high on Morris and expect him to be more like Gomez or LaPorta than Overbay or Hart. So to me, it doesn't make sense worrying about 2-6 weeks of service time when he won't be back in the big leagues for 2 more years anyways.
  11. I once saw a High Desert Mavericks game in San Jose (in 2003) when I believe the Mavs played 4 shortstops and 3 catchers in it...Ozzie Chavez, Mark Ernster, Raburn, and West could all play SS; Foster, Belcher, and I think Villanueva was a C/3b.
  12. Josh Prince and Aoki can play CF along with Schafer and Gomez. Throw in that Prince can play SS, and pads the numbers to 4 shortstops.
  13. I like that we have to rebound from an 83-win season. Seriously, with game results being slightly different, we could have been an 87 win team. I don't think of rebuilding unless we only win 70-75 games. It shows our progress
  14. The Brewers' system may not have any Ryan Braun-types, but I think we have a whole lot of Weeks-types. It's been fun to follow so far. I can't wait till we get up to 6 teams playing each day, even if the AZ squad is generally a waste to follow
  15. jjfanec, I think I have some idea what you mean now. I've heard one recruit have negative things to say about time at Marquette, and that was Jerone Maymon. Actually, it was his dad who was bitter that his son wasn't playing 40 minutes per game and had to play defense...I never saw anything from the player. I do feel bad about what happened to Newbill, especially since he looks like he could contribute on this team. That seemed rather bush league. Although I guess if I were a coach I'd want to be pretty selective in who I hand money to. I'm not sure of Marquette's tuition these days, but I'll bet a 4-year scholarship is worth well over $150,000.
  16. When we play the Cubs, I always remember the big hoopla surrounding Anthony Young's pursuit of the MLB record for consecutive losses without a win. ESPN seemed to lead the news off each day with tales of his losses (27 in a row). So I assumed he was really bad for the Cubs, Mets, and Astros. Yet his career ERA was 3.89, 100 ERA+, and a respectably 1.387 WHIP. He pitched a decade too early, as modern teams would have focused more on his stats than his wins and losses. Remarkably he had a stretch of 27 starts without a win in which he had 13 quality starts and his team went 4-23. Wow.
  17. Just a question...when did Hinske start looking like Matt Stairs?
  18. they can't technically put tobacco in there. minor leaguers get suspended if caught by the dip police
  19. Gobias Industries, that's a great line there. Seriously, that was mid-thigh over the inner half of the plate. Weeks should have put that BP fastball off the scoreboard. It's hilarious that Al would call that a ball. The two high inside heaters were nearly unhittable, but Weeks still could have shown some effort. Weeks' at bat was a joke
  20. Rickie Weeks with the worst at bat of the night. down by 1, with a former closer throwing BP on the mound, the pitcher on deck, he's the most potent bat in the Brewers' lineup, and he goes up the the plate looking to take? Rickie didn't even flinch with those 3 strikes. A groundout, flyout, or hit ties the game. I don't get the lack of aggressiveness in that situation
  21. Figaro scares me. The loopy back end of his motion seems to be why he throws pitches all over the place. Ax looks bad, but he's also an easy fix. His mechanics are off right now which is why he's up in the zone. When Ax is on top of his game, he rarely throws above the belt. Henderson looks okay so far. Gonzalez is all over the place. My worry isn't the bullpen right now, it's that we seemingly never have leads. Tomorrow's lineup may very well include 2 light-hitting shortstops, a minor league utility player, and a backup OF in left. That doesn't inspire much confidence.
  22. some bad comments in this thread: Fondy, as they've said Thomas was lucky that he was given some scholarship money given that he was walking on. jjfanec, I don't get the shady transfers under Buzz comment. Marquette fans learned under Crean that when you recruit lots of talent, it tends to transfer. Crean lost Blankston, Bradley, Bell, Berkowitz, Amoroso, Mbakwe, and countless others. Buzz has lost some, but it's no different. As for what others have said, isn't Marquette over-committed? They have the Cadougan, Thomas, and Lockett scholarships. They may have the Otule scholarship. But they need 5, and they's only 3/4. Were they under-committed this year?
  23. I really am liking this AA roster. I've long supported Kentrail Davis, Brock K, Nick Shaw (good to see Mr. OBP playing SS), Rogers, and Walker
  24. here's hoping Heckathorn turns it around, but man he's been disappointing to follow since his brief success in Brevard. We've managed to make Kinzler, Axford, and Henderson into good relievers, you'd think we could do that once with our own (former) power arm
  25. seeing as Thornburg was making his first start of the year, he has a bright future infront of him, and he faded down the stretch last year, I don't mind seeing him pulled after 70 pitches in April. If this happens in June or July, I'll be bummed. But I won't second guess that in April
