  1. Yost's attitude was great for a young team. I still think he's been one of the best managers recently, because more often than not I agreed with his decisions. It seemed like every time he made a questionable bullpen move, people on here blasted him for it, and we later found out that the guy(s) they wanted to pitch were unavailable. Plus, I was told that the pitching staff was pretty much left to Maddux to manage, with Yost just yanking guys when he had to. I loved how he wasn't afraid to get in a guy's face to tell him to start throwing strikes.
  2. That would have been an awesome move if we had gotten Howard at 30% off. He's a great guy and a great leader. He's also defensively superior to Fielder.
  3. A lot may depend on minor league camp. I can think of reasons why these guys could start at either A-club. Perhaps based on work ethic, the organization wanting to pair them with a particular pitching coach, how good (or bad) they look in camp, etc. The organization has said that they like to place guys with clubs and give them time to work their way through a list of objectives before they are promoted. In that case, I can't imagine the Brewer would put them on a club and expect to move them 5 starts later. If they are doing well, I would expect draft time would be fine for promotions. However, given our newfound organizational depth at pitcher, they could be held back because of a logjam. In that case, it's nice to promote guys only when they absolutely are ready, not just because they have had a few good promising starts. AAA: Peralta, Rivas, Scarpetta, Rogers, Fiers AA: Thornburg, Heckathorn, Anundsen, Bucci, Lamontagne?, Seidel, A+/A: Ross, Jungman, Bradley, Nieves, Arnett, Lasker, Miller, Nelson, Hall, Gagnon, Goforth, Strong, Toledo, etc.
  4. When I say that, it's because last year we opened the season with a less-than-perfect Hart, Greinke was barely throwing on the side, Marcum opened the season with a bad shoulder, Morgan hadn't stepped forward as a starter, we had serious issues with the back of the pen (Loe as 8th inning guy???), Saito was hurt, and....we still had Betancourt. Kotsay didn't hit a ball out of the infield til late May, and he was our key bat on the bench?
  5. As of now, we're likely better on opening day than last year. But if Braun is suspended, then that chances a lot.
  6. JohnBriggs12, I think you forgot the blue font. I want all of these guys to do well, along with Rogers, Rivas, Scarpetta, etc. But I also remember being excited by such former prospects as Kyle Peterson, JM Gold, Nick Neugebauer, Jose Mieses, Chad Robinson, Eric Thomas (both?), Will Inman, Ben Hendrickson, Cody Adams, etc etc etc Several I mentioned proved more than everyone you mentioned. They have to beat the odds to get to the big leagues and they need to do so without injury. I love our depth, but I'd expect 1 of those 4 to actually contribute in the big leagues.
  7. Gamel will be better than Fielder at 1st base because he won't be a liability. Prince added at least 5 errors on to everyone else's totals, perhaps more. His error total likely should have been 2-3 times higher, but official scorers blame the other fielders when the throw is anything but perfect. Every year we also see several players get picked off by pitchers, only to see Prince's throw to 2nd miss , allowing the runner to advance. He also has at least 20 batted balls go under his glove, while only a handful are ruled errors. We were spoiled to watch Sexson play defense every day. Fielder could play DH and still manage to make errors
  8. actually, Hart was drafted as a SS and immediately moved to 1b. a 30-game move to 1b is smart and increases team versatility and OF defense
  9. yep, ugly. no reason to bring back the mustard color
  10. I'm with Nate82 in that I like having our depth, even though they supposedly are #3-5 types. Look at the Rays' rotation. Yes, Shields was never thought of as an ace-type. Even Niemann never dominated the minors like experts hoped, and hasn't thrown as hard (or with as many strikeouts) since having shoulder surgery after Rice. They traded Garza, but he's not an ace as well. Price and Moore could be aces, but I'm just making the point that if you have good depth--not even great depth--it puts you in a great position where you can look to be the one trading pitchers rather than overpaying to acquire them
  11. Gomez and Hart. Hart is awful defensively, Gomez can't hit
  12. Sweet! I was seriously bummed when the Brewers and George Webbs went to Pepsi. Next time I'm in Milwaukee, it will be like old times as a kid, having a coke and a hot dog with stadium sauce at the game (and plenty of beers in the parking lot). The only redeeming quality with Pepsi (to me) is that they make Mtn Dew.
  13. World Series home field advantage cannot go to the team with the best record because of logistics with scheduling months in advance (that's the usual argument). Heck, the best "playoff" record is stupid, because it's not about winning or losing games in the playoffs, it's about winning series. the instant replay is fine, it just needs tweaking. At least it's not a joke like the NFL where they have many cameras and still can't get many right, due to the league's desire to not have booth replays or limiting challenges (case in point, how the Lions got screwed several times against the Packers). The drama of the coach's challenging plays is made for TV, but is terrible when at a game and leads to all sorts of problems. Plus, I like being able to %*%+% about how the umpires screwed us....makes me feel better than complaining about my team. How does skipping the allstar game (3 day break) affect the Olympics (roughly 10-20 day break needed)? The Olympics are a joke for baseball. The WBC has been a great event, and the Olympics don't want baseball because all the power on the IOC rests in Europe, not in Latin America, North America, Australia, or Southeast Asia. If you are shooting for the Olympics, I'd get teams to commit to sending their top prospects or do it by invitation only, like the 2000 winners.
  14. The thing is that Gennett may wind up being a Pedroia type, but he might also be lucky to be half the player Iribarren or Pickler were. I'm intrigued and like Gennett, but he's not a top 5 prospect, probably not even top 10 given our pitching depth
  15. don't forget...it was Democrats that started the birther thing. It was Republicans like my parents that perpetuated it. I took the simple approach that while an intriguing argument, I can't imagine a major political party would possibly nominate someone that is ineligible for office because they forgot to do their homework. back to the Brewers' bench..I'd consider Scott just as I'd consider Aoki--primarily for 50 games in LF, 5 more when Braun has a hamstring strain or oblique issue, 10-15 games in RF, 3-6 games at DH, and then perhaps a few starts at 1b (Aoki would be CF, not 1b). I don't mind an overly lefthanded bench since we'll have Izturis, Gomez, and possibly one more right-handed batting utility infielder on the bench.
  16. nice depth for AAA. He's not a quality big leaguer, but he's a class act and he throws hard. Who knows, he could start producing and contribute, but at least he's there for depth
  17. If Aoki's skillset is as advertised, then he's not a bad 4th OF (speed, contact, bunt, defense, etc). Heck, he can't be worse than Shinjo was in the majors
  18. I never read it as implying that he was a monkey. That was your interpretation. I read it as he teased Pie for acting like an animal, and threw the food he snacks on while at his locker. I was called an animal countless times in Middle School, high school, and in college for my uncanny ability to find rebounds in basketball games, despite being 5'11"...I never viewed that as somebody trying to ridicule me. I viewed it as somebody complimenting me for being amazingly involved given my lack of ability. I don't know anything about Pie, but perhaps he sometimes acts on impulse. Maybe I'm being naive, but I'm not reading the article's quotes as you are.
  19. I agree with Al. I still contend that Green fits in with that. Since they won't play and they have their futures ahead of them, I prefer them all in AAA.
  20. wow, I read those quotes from Scott and picked up on no racism. I think this is some oversensitivity on peoples' parts. It reminds me of when I was in college. I was approaching my dorm, and someone was meeting my friend there (but didn't know him yet). They saw me entering the building, and asked if I knew where he could find JR. I said, "why yes I do. If you head this way and keep your eyes out for the skinny short black guy that is dressed like a professor...that's him. He walks that path right about now." The person looked at me awkwardly and said that it seemed racially insensitive. I pointed out that on our college campus, nearly all African-Americans males were on the basketball team, and that the description I gave was because JR was 5'5", African American, and likely wearing khakies and a sweatervest. If also reminds me of one time when I was teaching students about some Jewish history, and a student innocently asked why the word "Jew" was a bad word. I told him that it wasn't a bad word, but rather a descriptive term about members of either a particular religious or ethnic group. Some people that distrust them might use it as if it is a bad word, but for most of us it is simply a descriptive word. What if Luke Scott had been eating an apple? Would throwing an apple core have been racist (I'm assuming the banana chips play into the conspiracy)? My point is that if Luke Scott means nothing by it and it's not interpreted by teammates in a negative fashion, then I can't find fault in his behavior.
  21. I see Peralta at 46, not 22. And Bradley and Jungman are 66 and 73.
  22. Kegstand81, I was hoping the Cubs would sign Fielder. A Soriano-like 10 year contract would have been a beautiful thing.
  23. TheCrew07, I'm curious about this surgery you mention for shoulders. I'm pretty sure the labrum is the cartilage in the shoulder, not a tendon. Why would removing a tendon fix a cartilage tear?
  24. Colby, my understanding was that the modified Type A picks would come before the 1st round pick, not 2nd round pick. So I thought there was a possibility KRod could have landed us better picks than Fielder...was I reading this wrong? I never once saw a mention of the modified Type A's picks being in the 2nd round
  25. Barker was fine in Milwaukee, we just gave way too many at bats to Charlie Hayes.
