  1. hey all, I was pondering this during yesterday's wootoff...what's the best item a brewerfan.net user has gotten in a bag of crap? I've gotten it one time, and it was a couple of adapters, couple ipals, and buffalo wing serving trays, with a youth backpack.
  2. 3 or 4 years ago I really wanted Miguel Montero. But besides him, I think we're done dealing for Dbacks catchers. Moeller--yuck. Estrada--yuckier. ?????-yuckiest
  3. I have contacts and have used them for about 10 years for sporting events (glasses normally). I purchased some Oakley prescription sunglasses to account for my slightly weak distance vision and I found that I could not golf in them. The feeling close to the ball was as if I were drunk. I could see distances great, though. Last year while coaching girls' golf, I opted to not wear contacts once and wore my prescription sunglasses. I got roped into playing a few holes with the girls, and I found that my eyes had adjusted from driving with them on, and I could now shoot in the 70s with the sunglasses. When I'd first gotten them, I couldn't hit the sweet-spot. So it could take time for him to get used to the prescription shades
  4. Very solid course. It was my high school's home course, and the front nine is a true joy. Of course, it stunk my junior and senior years, because we never hosted a Varsity match there. Still, good memories of playing that probably 50-70 times in high school
  5. Cain was moved to CF shortly before all the injuries occured. I wouldn't be shocked to see him moved back to a corner spot, while keeping in mind that he's capable of CF (like Hart)
  6. Gotta root for MUHS, even if most everyone I talk with has been upset with the coach for a number of years. When it comes down to it, I support the school that has helped give me so many opportunities. Sometimes I forget about things, but recently a friend with a PHD reminded me of why--to him--there is only one high school in Wisconsin to send a son to. I've never understood the private school resentment among public schools. Here in AZ, folks constantly try to bash Brophy, Xavier, St. Mary's, and Notre Dame Prep. They wrongly accuse private schools of recruiting, whereas the public schools are actively doing so. I teach in a public school and was educated by both private and public schools. The only thing that differentiates them for me is that at private schools, the students and parents--on the whole--buy into the school community at a much higher rate. I get disappointed that the HS I teach in has no school spirit. I see lots of teachers/parents that are either pro-athletics or pro-academics. I fail to understand why things can't be like they were at MUHS (and presumably most private schools) where both academics and athletics were a priority. Anyways, best of luck to all schools in this year's tourny.
  7. Dukes is a pretty good guy. He's aloof, but in the Fall League, he's right up there with guys like Miguel Montero, Huston Street, Ryan Howard, Stephen Drew, etc, as guys that truly respected the support staffs around them. Guys like James Loney and Jarrod Saltalamacchia treated people like crap. Dukes has his demons, but he has more talent than any minor league OF we currently have. My concern is that he has no cartilage in his knee.
  8. Was at the game today. Axford looked awful, Parra looked good against the Rockies' AA lineup. The Rockies' starter, Hammel, must have really good movement because our hitters were missing his fastballs by a foot and--when we did hit them--they were grounders. Escobar, Weeks, and Oeltjen looked good. Cain with an awesome at bat...was that about 15 pitches before hitting the homer? Lawrie looked awful in his at bat. Didn't realize that Errecart was in the Rickey Henderson mold of the ultra-rare "bats right, throws left". Brent Brewer--surprisingly--looked good out there. Agent Josh...please be sure to pass along some praise, as he looked smooth in the field and looked okay at the plate (I sort of expected him to be totally lost)
  9. There hasn't been anything about Iribarren, but we know he's starting at shortstop today.
  10. Interesting to read in the jsonline blog that Peterson is encouraging movement in the deliveries. I wonder if this is that same unique approach that the A's pitchers always had, where they lifted their lead leg and hands at the same time. They are the only team I've seen where most of their home-grown pitches throw with the same--and in this case, unique--motion
  11. Jenkins clearly shouldn't be on the list. I have to believe we have someone better than his mediocrity.
  12. I wouldn't say that, Invader. Macha says that right now, he's a reliever until he learns a soft pitch.
  13. i went for it and will post my thoughts later this week.
  14. mothership, thanks for the link. I'm really interested in the 13.3 sizes as an updrade over my old netbook. I just want to know if this processor will be passable or annoying.
  15. Hey all, I am upgrading from my old netbook (damn Atom processors!). I want an affordable 13.1-14.1 laptop, optical drive optional. I'm focusing on HP because I love my 6 month old quad-core processor. The big issue for me is that I know little about the seemingly endless lines of processors...core duo, core 2 duo, i3, i5, i7, CULV, Turion II, amd athlon neo x2, etc. my desktop does heavy computing. My laptop is for web browsing, Brewerfan.net viewing, brewers game-tracker viewing, emailing, and--occasionally--work emailing. So basically, it's web and email. The netbooks sucked because they slowed to a crawl if I had 2 browser windows open. I tend to over-shop for computers, putting in too much RAM and too impressive a CPU given my needs. Today's officemax circular in the paper included the hp dm3-1130US for $500 (click here). Anyone want to check it out and see if it might work for my needs? Also says it should get 5+ hrs of battery life.
  16. the Brewers have drafted tons of pitchers the last 2-3 years, so it makes sense that we'll see some decently high picks being let go.
  17. Adam, the Brewers can easily carry both Salome and Lucroy in AAA since they play a lot of games with a DH.
  18. Schoeneweis has never been any good, so unless he's planning on being a BP pitcher, I don't see him with the Brewers in 2010, and I see him as having several lefties ahead of him in AAA, including Capuano, Mulder (if signed), Braddock, and any other lefty that makes the AAA team
  19. I really hoped Jim Rushford would develop into a John VanderWal type off the bench. He was a fun guy to root for.
  20. I'll stick with the pitching side here. I fully expected a rotation in around 2003 to feature Mike Jones, Nick Neugebauer, JM Gold, Ben Sheets, and one other guy....that guy is Jose Mieses. He was my favorite prospect to follow at the time, followed by a sleeper named Ryan Poe.
  21. With Watten, if his sinker is that good, some go through a noticeable jump in the big leagues. Brandon Webb had iffy ERAs but has been one of the top 5 in the game since his callup
  22. i always like new ideas. Personally, it's like the new WIAA football plan, which I can't endorse. I teach in Arizona where the idea of conferences doesn't exist. Yes, we have our "Region", but we are re-regioned every 2 years, creating few rivalries. Heck, my district has 5 high schools of over 2000 kids each, yet only 2 are in the same region. We should all be in the same conference to promote rivalries and district pride. Basing sports on geography makes sense. It might not be fairest to the poorer pro teams or smaller schools, but it's a lot more fun to have geographical rivals than 3 hour busrides every week! Plus, every once in a while, a program has that magical year!
  23. I support 96 teams because it means smaller conferences will get some more respect. I was in college about 10 years ago, and at least 2 of the years my Santa Clara Broncos had 20+ wins. Yet they didn't even get an NIT invite. These seasons included beating Gonzaga (by then consistently in NCAA) and finishing 3rd in a conference in which 2 teams were making the tourny each year (usually Pepperdine and Gonzaga). Making matters worse is that friends at Minnesota one year saw their team make the post-season with a 15-14 record, while my school had one of its best seasons since Steve Nash's days, and were punished because the WCC was too strong that year. And the regular season still would matter...it would affect seeding!
  24. Just looking at things, and I have to think that Parra has a decent chance for a breakout year, as do a number of other players. Bush, Hart, Gomez, and Weeks have all shown glimpses, but never put whole seasons together. Heck, I just did a little look at two pitchers off the top of my head who were huge underachievers early in their careers, and both Roy Halladay and Chris Carpenter compare favorably to Parra early in their careers.
  25. Unless Corey is looking at mediocre former Brewers Outfielders that were overpaid (Grissom, Jenkins, Hammonds, etc), I can't fathom how he thinks he deserves a big raise based on his performance. I am an Econ guy, but it's frustrating to see Corey fighting over dollars he didn't earn, while I'll likely be taking my third consecutive paycut as a teacher (and I'll be entering my 4th year as a teacher). I'm not trying to play the teacher salary-card...I'm in better shape than most since I actually have a degree in something besides Education. However, I want Corey to be great and don't want to hear about him being disappointed with the Brewers' arbitration offer than is roughly 25% higher than last year's salary.
