  1. just curious, why did we remove McGehee from the game and replace him with Counsell rather than Gamel? Does Macha even know that Gamel is on the team?
  2. I can't see Cain in AAA next year in April. I would think Schafer would play CF in Huntsville primarily, with Cain returning to his natural position of RF. However, they'll likely rotate all three (with Gindl) into CF, LF, and RF to increase versatility should they be needed in the big leagues.
  3. It'd mean that ballgames would get a lot slower with LaRussa's style, but he and Duncan seem to be able to take mediocre pitchers and turn them into studs. Anyone is better than Macha...maybe even Lopester!
  4. My bigger issue has been with Macha refusing to sac bunt with no outs, runner on first, a weak hitter in the plate, and the game tied (or down 1) in the 9th or extra frames. His refusal to sac bunt is what made me decide he's a poor manager, as this happened repeatedly in early June when the Crew was moving into their skid. I'll be the first to admit I was a big Yost fan. I liked that he let his players play, he stood up for them, and he wanted them to use their skills. He didn't run the bad runners, didn't overuse the bunt, and didn't force players to play his style. I miss Ned's fire, as Macha seems asleep most games and doesn't stand up for his players.
  5. At this point I can't fathom bringing back Macha. He had the same team that Yost did in the first half of '08 and his team was significantly worse. Yost's teams never looked as bad and underachieving as Macha's did in April and June-Sept.
  6. Nice to see big Brock finish the year at a high point of .250. For much of the year he was around .220-230.
  7. Man JJ looks lost at the plate. We've seen this every year for stretches, though. But in the past, somehow he changed his approach midseason and started going to RF. JJ is still swinging the same way he was in April--with his head pulling off of everything.
  8. I've never been high on Cain, so I hope he has to prove things before moving up. I tend to think of Green's style and approach as being something they can be more aggressive with. I do understand the Schafer argument, but if they now view Shafer as a CF, they'll likely move Cain back to RF where he played until this year.
  9. I assume Green will go to AAA next year, but I'm not sure where he'll play. His BB totals have been fine, and what happened was his wrist fatigued over time. He had a great start, and likely showed enough (and should in the AFL) to warrant a promotion to AAA)
  10. Wow, how does someone have an ERA under 5 yet lose 14 games? Let's ask Mr. Watten!
  11. They probably are being careful because they don't want the blisters to re-appear. That can be such a touchy issue
  12. Crazy Helena lineup. It features 2-3b, 2-SS, 1-1b (in LF though), and 3-C's. Wow
  13. johnbriggs, why do you feel pitchers must be in the big leagues by a young age? There's nothing wrong with a slow progression to the big leagues, especially if it's because of injuries. Look at Mitch Stetter and Mark DiFelice. They're big leaguers and it doesn't matter that it took them forever.
  14. Al, we don't know for sure if they made room on the 40 for anyone. Remember, Melvin in past years has liked having 1-2 spots open on the 40 man for waiver claims and flexibility
  15. Al, I thought the Dbacks AAA club wasn't in Tucson anymore. Sure it's the PCL Western branch, but it's still not Tucson
  16. Which of our teams won the first half titles. I thought a couple were close. They used to note that with an x or asterisk
  17. Wow, way to go Mark Rogers! 5 innings, no walks, 7 K's! Even the doubters should be excited that he's back!
  18. FTJ, don't forget that Reagan was out of the spotlight after the '88 election because he was already showing signs of alzheimers. So Nancy was protecting him. Kennedy was a great politician, but it upsets me that he commits a crime that would have any of us in jail for vehicular manslaughter, and he not only gets off, but he gets re-elected.
  19. remember, by mid-AFL the taxi squads don't exist anyways. Teams are desperate for pitching and some pitchers have been sent home for injuries/excessive workloads. Heck, Dustin McGowan packed it up and left the AFL because he made his 5 starts. He didn't care that he was scheduled to throw in the championship game--in his mind he'd fulfilled his promise to the Jays. The only taxi squad guys that might keep that role all year are injured pitchers like Braddock or a team's 3rd/4th catcher. Even then, they usually get dealt to another squad in the league if a spot opens, rather than staying put on the taxi squad
  20. Should we assume that Nevakshonoff had a surgery or two since he's missed 2 years?
  21. I like that the Brewers are grooming Green for a super-sub role. 3b, 2b, and 1b would be nice, maybe even a little OF. If he hits, he'll settle at one spot (like my 2 faves from the 90s, Cirillo and Loretta).
  22. Looper has generally done alright. The bad outings were the two or three when he was staked to big leads and gave them back. Still, with a good last 6 weeks he could finish with an ERA in the 4.2-4.5 range. I see the Brewers excercising the option, but if the market is weak for pitching, Looper might decline his
  23. I recall hearing from sources that Fielder turned down a huge contract in spring training of '08 that Boras had approved of. Based on statements and assumptions, I was thinking the contract was in the 5/$75M range. I don't see Prince signing for less than 5 years and $90 million now.
  24. Patterson and Redman are great AAA depth. Should the Brewers opt to not bring back Cameron, neither would be THAT big of a downgrade for the $9+ million in savings
  25. I love Joe Buck and Tim McCarver, although that might be more because I hear their voices and I know it's a big game. I hate any broadcast that features Phil Simms or Bill Walton. I still am waiting for the technology that will allow me to mute those idiots while allowing insight from their coworkers
