  1. Colby, because of the plethora of picks early for the Crew, might it make more sense to go rounds 1-3, 4-10?
  2. I haven't seen Mike Jones' name in a while...is he active?
  3. from rotoworld, " Hall signed a four-year, $24 million contract after winning team MVP honors in 2006, but has hit just .246/.309/.422 in 187 games since." Interesting to see just how mediocre he's been since his 35 homer year. I like Hall, but at this point if it came down to one or the other, I think Hardy has a brighter future. I like his steady defense over Hall's flashy defense.
  4. Colby, I've tried to follow this year, but I can't find any comparisons. Who compares most favorably to Sheets? Who is a HS pitcher likely to be available in the 2nd round that can be a minor league stud and fast-mover, like Inman and Gallardo? Who is this year's Jeremy Sowers? Who is this year's Brett Anderson? Thanks for all you do
  5. Pogo, I believe that once a player has played at a level, they can be demoted but their contract remains at that higher level of pay . That's why it's important for placing players before the Rule V draft.
  6. I hear ya Russ. At the same time, I say we go 8-2 against the Cubs, thus shaving 6 games off their lead.
  7. we could trade Hall, offer Cirillo a chance to play in AAA with the chance to contribute in a few months, etc. I'm half-kidding with that Seriously, what teams need a SS? Rockies, Giants, D-Rays, Twins?
  8. well, thru 4 or 5 days I'm up to $4.92. not bad.
  9. I saw Garciaparra in the AFL a few years back. While no star, he's serviceable at the IF spots and can be an okay slap hitter
  10. I have a hard time with the NBA because of the lack of players that I like. I enjoyed the Bucks of the 1999-2002 period. I enjoy the Suns these days. But it can be very difficult as a fan who doesn't understand basketball culture to really get into things. Maybe it's because I'm a bland white male. Maybe it's because I'm middle class. But there's something about watching over-tattooed folks with bad hairdoos and shorts that touch their socks that just doesn't appeal to me. Like I said, I've long understood it's basketball culture, just as I understand body art can be popular with bikers. But I have nothing to identify with the players, especially because the system in place allows for virtually no fan-player bond. Even star players get traded somewhat frequently. Yet in MLB or the NFL, there can be a totally different player-fan bond as the fans in a market can watch a player over many years, from rookie to veteran status. I hate to bring up the race or socio-economic issues, but it is something that is unique. My group of friends was huge into the major 3 sports (and college hoops) in high school. But nowadays, we talk baseball, football, and occasionally college hoops. the NBA is virtually as non-existent as the NHL is to most in Wisconsin. I can't explain why, though.
  11. Be careful with weighted classes, like someone alluded to before, if you have a 4.0 with weighted classes, the admissions will knock down your GPA to take away the weighting. This happened to my GF at the time when she graduated. She had a 3.6 with weighted classes. The UW only would credit her with a 3.3. Luckily she had a 27 on her ACT and got in. Me with my 3.3 and 29 ACT didnt. Sucks being a male from Madison, but that is a whole other issue. JWill, that's pretty good for her. I had a 3.2 from what is usually considered a top 5 high school in the state (and the high school doesn't weight classes), 29 ACT, 1350 SAT and I did not get into Madison. Luckily I never wanted to go there, but I did feel for those that failed to get into their dream schools. When contacting them, I was told that with those numbers I should have gotten in or been wait-listed, until they heard my zip code. Apparently Madison already had too many white males from Elm Grove. Of course, the other explanation is that I applied in 1998/99, and that was the year of the major software problem that Madison had. It resulted in a massive shift for people from my high school from Madison to Marquette, bucking the trends of previous years
  12. I don't recall anyone replying when I asked. I thought Fryer was known for his defense at catcher. Yet he's played exclusively LF in West Virginia. Is he now an OF, or just in LF due to needing a place to play?
  13. Also, I see that Mike Adams is still throwing well. His slider looked filthy for the Padres the other night. So he's on the Pads as well
  14. also, realize that roughly 50% of all available loans/grants/scholarships out there go unused because people don't know how to get ahold of the money. Don't look at private schools as being ridiculously expensive, because often their alums give back heavily to help students afford the schools.
  15. Also, I'd consider taking the SAT's and retaking the ACTs. I seem to recall a 27 being rather mediocre and most people improve their scores when they retake them.
  16. I'd say the priority list goes like this: 1) Hart 6-8 years 2) Sheets 2-3 years 3) Gallardo 3-5 years, although at this point it makes sense to go year-to-year with him 4) Weeks 4 years 5) Fielder 5-6 years 6) Hardy. He's a guy that makes sense to go year-to-year, since he's really had one great half season and one good half-season in his career
  17. For years now I have defended Prince. He's rather agile for someone of his size. But has anyone seen a worse defensive 1b? He's made at least 5 mistakes in the last week that have been ridiculous. Today the routine grounder that McClouth hit was yet another example. Should have been an easy out. Prince was lazy, and called off Bush, then wound up giving up allowing McClouth to reach on a "single"
  18. Man, Mercedes with almost identical numbers to his stint in West Virginia last year...yuck
  19. Doug Melvin has been a fan of Branyan for some time, so I think he will likely soon be making a move to bring Branyan up to platoon with Hall. He probably also wanted to see how Nix, Iribarren, Nelson, and Rottino were doing, along with the pitchers.
  20. trwi7, no, my idea is to improve the pitching and defense dramatically. I was looking at the overall shift of OBP from Cameron-Brantley, Hall-Gamel, Fielder-LaPorta. While losing Fielder should be a big hit, the other two should be fairly large improvements based on minor league performance. So I was looking at improving pitching and defense, unblocking the logjam, and helping solve the pitching problem. I like Fielder, but I was viewing him as an asset, not as a prized posession.
  21. To me, the idea of trading Prince was not about giving up on him. It was rather to adjust the lineup to better fill needs by late 2009. Right now we're a bit power heavy. That's nice when slugging them out of the park, but we need more OBP balance. As of now, our team OBP's look awful for most players. CF Brantley SS Hart LF Braun 3b Gamel 1b LaPorta 2b Weeks SS Hardy C ??? 1: Sheets 2: Gallardo 3: Blanton 4: Parra 5: ???? Suppan, Bush, Hammond, Miller, Capuano, etc closer: Street setup: Pena, Mota/Torres, etc
  22. I thought of this trade idea because I'm getting a bit tired of Fielder's horrific defense. Additionally, he has a ton of trade value, yet is replaceable.
  23. What about Fielder and something for Blanton and Street. The A's have Foulke. The move would also free up the potential financial flexibility to sign Sheets for 2-4 more years. It'd open up first base for one someone like Branyan, LaPorta, Gamel, etc. That would allow Brantley to be the CF of the future, while also fitting in the prospects. I'm sure that Beane is a fan of Fielder now, since he's succeeded in the big league. I know in the draft he laughed at him. (more specific subject -TC)
  24. I'd rather have called up a lefty with some talent for the 2nd bullpen lefty spot. I'd think Narron's 60 mph changeup and strike-throwing ability would do better than Jackson's mediocre stuff
