  1. Not good. What speeds was he throwing last season? Not sure why it's bad. As Stearns says, last year JJ was throwing 90-92 in early April, but slowly worked it up. Sounds like he's not throwing 83-84 like spring training. Looking forward to him being back
  2. Yeah, better than Weeks, but that’s setting the bar low. I’m hoping he’ll fumble it less as the season goes on
  3. Davies still throwing soft. I’m hoping his velocity returns to old levels soon, although happy with results. It looks like he’s throwing knuckleballs in that he doesn’t appear to be really following through. His motion looks like effortless 87 instead of efforted 93.
  4. I'm confident it'll end up being solid, but I personally am really hoping they don't try to do that with Nelson. If he's not healthy enough to pitch, we've got bigger problems. But at this point, after all the rehab, his shoulder is going to have to get back into shape, he's going to have scar tissue, but using him in the pen for 2-3 innings? Once Nelson is ready to go, I think he slots back into the pen. think there's a very very small chance he becomes a long man in the pen. I was thinking maybe Nelson fills a Burnes/Hader role of 2-3 IP. I’m not sure if he’ll be used back-to-back days, so it would allow him to fill a valuable role. We shall see though
  5. Also good news, Jansen threw 19 pitches in the inning. Hopefully he’s not available for all 3 games
  6. Wow what a K. Given that Hader can’t pitch tomorrow already, I’d be tempted to let him close this thing out Then again, he hasn’t looked sharp
  7. I’ve never heard of an automated strike zone getting a concussion. Just sayin’... So what happens if two umps in a game get hurt? I mean, we’ve lost one in several games this week.
  8. It's all a matter of opinion. I guess I never watch the Braves, so I've never heard of him. But if Alphabet or Amazon buy a small company before they are big, does CNBC declare that they robbed the entrepreneurs by buying them for $500 million instead of $10 billion 4 years later? When Coke bought Glaceau, did people declare they were robbing them? This contract was not forced upon the kid. He signed it, his agent advised it, and the team agreed to it. If we offered Keston Hiura $60 million for the next 10 years, should he take it? He hasn't seen a day in the majors. Technically he may never see a day in the majors (although unlikely). Remember when Mat Gamel was a stud hitting prospect. It we had offered him a long-term deal, it would have been terrible. It's the risk-reward of this. Teams are assuming some risk with these contracts to young unproven talents, players are receiving money they don't yet deserve. But it can work out for both parties.
  9. kind of a bummer for me, but I always envisioned him as a sweet-swinging lefty. Nothing wrong with being righty, but I had imagined him as lefty until I looked it up the other day
  10. at least coming out of the bullpen, his velocity has been at 2017 levels and his off-speed stuff has looked sharp.
  11. Imagine if the A's had signed journeymen and never given Hudson, Zito, Mulder, Harang, and Harden to take some lumps. We have some seriously talented youngsters. We're currently 8 deep in our rotation. Let the kids learn.
  12. bounce back from what? shoulder fatigue? I have total faith that he'll perform somewhere between last year and career norms, meaning he'll be huge for us.
  13. From all indications last season, the Brewers in 2018 either had a very small profit or possibly a loss. Throw in the $60+ million for Maryvale. We're the only team spending on our spring training facility. The brewers operating income was 8th in all of baseball at 66 mil, no loss or small profit there. A quick google search says Operating Income is before interest and taxes, among other things. Throw in that this is ALL speculation, as the Brewers have not opened their books. The Brewers likely financed the Maryvale renovation, but a portion probably hit the books last year. So MAYBE a small profit if the Forbes numbers are accurate
  14. From all indications last season, the Brewers in 2018 either had a very small profit or possibly a loss. Throw in the $60+ million for Maryvale. We're the only team spending on our spring training facility.
  15. How many hitters has Burnes faced a third time through? Burnes is giving up hr in every situation. Peralta has given up all his runs early in 2 outings. They will be fine. We haven’t developed our own pitching except Sheets and Yo. It’s time we take the A’s model and try to get 4-5 years out of a young pitcher then let them move on. Our commitment to young starters will pay off. If one is struggling in mid-May, then he can help shore up the pen while Nelson returns to the rotation. It’s a long season...let’s give them 5-10 turns before we start waiving the white flag. Our bullpen needs help. I’m guessing our next wave of pitchers help shore it up like Burnes did last year.
  16. can you give an example where the young starters were hit in their 2nd or 3rd time through the order? I didn't think so
  17. Gotta say that Grandal is brutal behind the dish. His pitch framing is supposed to be good, but he’s probably cost his pitchers 10 or more strikes this year by swiping at balls in the zone. Tonight they e had multiple pitches on the edges called balls
  18. very true. two hard-hit balls? And one of them--by Pujols--was nearly caught. Hopefully he can settle down for 4 innings today
  19. As a amateur mathematician myself, I think road and away are played consecutive weeks is because it is just easier to schedule the games. Clearly an amateur linguist as well, eh?? couldn't resist
  20. Played golf Saturday with a diehard Mets fan. After hearing him declare they have 5 legit MVP candidates and 3 pitchers with a chance at the Cy Young award, he casually asked how the Brewers were doing so far. I said 7-1, and he went silent for a few minutes. Kind of a funny experience
  21. Don’t think anyone posted this, but yesterday the Brewers sent Williams down
  22. Just curious, but what was Davies' velocity in '17? I swore he threw 90-92. Today almost every fastball clocked at 88 on MLB At Bay.
