  1. Arizona isn't much of an issue if you ask me. It isn't like no one wants to support them and they may be forced to relocate far far away. They want to move out of Phoenix, but sounds like that won't be an option for years. . Arizona doesn't have a team issue, they have a stadium issue. The stadium has many fault in terms of design. It's likely we'll hear about a new stadium being paid for by the native American tribe in the next 3-5 years.
  2. I've been advocating for Portland, Las Vegas, and Montreal for a while. So it's nice to hear two being considered. I'd like to see MLB expand to 8 divisions with 4 teams in each. Arizona also has a stadium issue that needs resolving. Most here seem to think the DBacks--and possibly Coyotes--may move to the Indian Reservation near Salt River Fields and the Talking Stick Resort and Casino. I'd also like to see Milwaukee and SE Wisco keep the stadium tax to build funds in advance for the inevitable Miller Park replacement in 20 years. Of course, I thought that the funds should have also been used for the Bucks arena
  3. that is correct. If we sign him for $1 million, the Jays would owe him $37million.
  4. He’s the kind of guy that will be perfect for a bounce back year. Would love to pursue him.
  5. So how does that work? Does she still get paid once her PTO / sick time has been exhausted? Or does some sort of short-term disability coverage kick in? These should all be unpaid days. If it were something chronic, it would be covered as medical leave. Our peeve is the students aren’t being educated, and we think the reason she’s getting away with it is she’s the principal’s niece.
  6. Was there politics mentioned? mod edit: deleted political sentences
  7. Just to update. We get 4 personal days and 10 sick days annually. We can convert 2 sick to personal. After that, we start using sick days. The co-worker has missed the last 6 days for the cruise, and 7 total in the last two weeks. And supposedly she missed 15-20 days in Aug-Oct.
  8. Brantley makes a lot of sense as line-drive/contact hitter. His lack of strikeouts and K/BB would improve the lineup, and finally healthy and in Miller Park he could see the homers increase to the mid-20s. I like the idea of adding a doubles hitter with nice OBP
  9. Is this a joke? He allowed only 3 runs 3 times. The Brewers found him the same way they found Chacin--advanced metrics. The Brewers found that Chacin had one outstanding pitch he needed to throw far more, and they found Miley had one pitch he needed to throw more. Both had terrific years.
  10. Zurch, that's a tough one. If you wanted to see if she is gluten intolerant or if it's mental, you could try a gluten-free beer. I had a roommate in college with Celiacs and he would scratch himself all night and have extreme stomach issues if the meal had even a little trace of gluten. Most people not eating gluten today are doing it as a fad trendy diet. Perhaps your wife has gluten sensitivity rather than gluten intolerance.
  11. Interesting to hear how things are different with you other teachers. I'm assuming you teach in Wisconsin. My friends there have such superior pay and benefits as compared to my district that it made me pretty tone-deaf when they complained a few years back, but it sounds as though the districts aren't all as friendly. As for benefits in retirement, my district used to cover someone from normal retirement until Medicare IF the retiree subbed 20 days for free. A few years ago they placed a cap on the amount of the health coverage they would provide.
  12. There are no such things as crippling contracts when you've got the league's wealthiest owner.
  13. We are only allowed to bank 100. When teachers are retiring they become sick twice a week since our district gives you no compensation for saving days. We can bank as many as we want. We get 10 sick days per year and 4 personal days. If we use 0 or 1 sick day, we get a bonus for our "sick bank." If we teach more than 15/20 years and retire in the districted, we get compensated at .625/1.25 x the daily sub rate. I have a friend in Utah that gets to bank his days and use them to retire 1-2 years early.
  14. I have a co-worker who has missed over 30 school days and still was allowed to take a cruise, missing 5 more this week. This person is a 2nd year teacher who has no available sick or personal days through 1.5 years. Has missed at least 75 days (very low-end estimate) over 1.5 years. And still is employed???? In the meantime I'm in year 12, have 150 sick/personal days saved up, and feel guilty if I every miss days. I already miss too many for coaching, but it's at least an excuse.
  15. I've noticed in recent years (and ranted in this forum semi-frequently) about things like this. People no longer pull out into the intersection and make a turn, they try to do it all at once. There are really several parts to making a turn, and they try to make it into one move.
  16. clancy, I doubt Miller is a target. I've read the Mets and Yankees both connected with him
  17. Mark and friends bought the Brewers in 2005 for $223M. If he sold it today there would be a "B" in the amount. He also has an investment banking firm which allowed him to buy the Brewers. He has a personal wealth of $700M. He is a great owner and will spend when needed, because it is more than just a business, it is his adult toy. That being said it is still a business and he still wants to make money. In the past, studies have shown that sports owners don’t make much money while they own the franchise. However, they make money when they sell.
  18. What are the M’s willing to eat? If they eat $40 million, we can play him for a year then move him as 4 years and $56 million is palatable for many teams. If he’s not playing well, we dose his post-game meals with something until he tests positive again
  19. wow, we have no clue whatsoever to the Brewers spending on Minor League players, facilities, support systems, etc. We have no clue what the Brewers generate for revenues. It would be ridiculous for anyone to make a claim that MA has pocketed $75M. I would assume all of the revenues stay with the franchise and no money is going to him.
  20. The way arby works is that he won't get the same amount or less than last year. It's based on the totality of his work, and therefore offering any less than $.5M more than last year would be considered low-ball offer. Sorry, there's no way he gets $8-10M unless he signs before the deadline.
  21. just remember, that we can also offer Schoop arby, then trade him later or cut him without full financial ramifications. Cutting him in Spring Training would only cost $1.5-2.5 million.
  22. I had never heard of him until we acquired him. His 30.6% K% is what was obviously referenced, as he rarely hit the ball as a Brewer. His BABIP sucked, and that's likely a fluke. But failing to put the ball in play (aka striking out 50% more than MLB avg) AND having a low BABIP doubly explain his failure.
  23. clancy, one issue is that BABIP doesn't account for Schoop seemingly rarely hitting the ball
  24. turbo, Helena moved to Colorado Springs. There is no Helena baseball team in affiliated ball
  25. So teams only trade away pieces that don't currently fit? I think that's a bit ridiculous. They traded assets to acquire assets. I thought Ortiz would get traded, as he didn't necessarily fit with us, wasn't drafted by us, and could be a nice trade chip. But Medeiros was a great fit. We had to give him up to acquire a late innings reliever.
