  1. Of course he was available. Not being on the 40-man roster with his years in pro-ball makes him available. Makes me a little baffled about his 2nd half. Was he not as good as the stats seemed? Not often a lefty throwing 94-96 with MLB experience gets overlooked. Scouts must not like his stuff
  2. Wait, don't we still have Hellweg, Pena, and Segura? Greinke became a monster after the trade. But we wouldn't have had him the last few years. I'd take that trade any day. We'll likely trade Seggy for something of value. Pena still has a chance to become a solid contributor. And Hellweg is like the new Ben Diggins (great talent, lots of groundouts, can't do it at MLB), but may just need more chances
  3. well, I stand by my prediction from a few years ago: 5/10/12: "Given what we know about Lawrie, I could see him playing on several teams, having occasional great years, like Gary Sheffield. We know from the comments that he thinks the universe revolves around him." 9/28/13: "I still think he's going to wind up with a career like a poor man's Sheffield. He'll have some very good years, but he'll be traded over and over, whenever he starts to complain about teams not winning and being treated poorly." In fairness to Sheffield, his overall career really took off and he had many productive seasons, especially as he aged and matured. Perhaps the same will happen with Lawrie
  4. I've enjoyed following Strong dominate at every level. I hope he succeeds in MLB. Don't know much about his stuff, but have to question a lefty with great numbers being let go
  5. AKCheesehead, didn't Wolf have a prolonged history of success? Happ only has a prolonged record of teams falling in love with his potential. Reminds me of Matt Clement and Scott Schoenweiss.
  6. Also, it would encourage teams to be creative with their bench players. I'm surprised there hasn't been another Brooks Kieschnick.
  7. It's a nice idea, and some starters could earn their way out of it. But it would also keep guys fresher. Wish slightly lower work loads, guys would probably be more ready in the 1st inning (we've seen Sheets and Nelson struggle with this) and perhaps able to throw every 4th day.
  8. incredible pitching stats given the AFL is always hitter friendly
  9. YoungGeezy, he'll always be compared to Prince in terms of size...hopefully also production. I remember early in his MLB career, it was determined that Prince was the heaviest player under 6' in MLB history. And he kept trying to eat CC Sabathia
  10. Hmmm....moving a dominant reliever to the rotation....sounds like something the Cards have found successful for years (wainwright, looper, and most of their guys this year)
  11. so far I like what I'm hearing about Johnson's view of things.
  12. [sarcasm]You kids get off my lawn! [/sarcasm] Isn't a fresh look what people wanted rather than retreads? He has 11 years at Vandy plus 3 in the Cubs minor leagues. Are they going cheap or being innovative? Seems like they are going for new perspectives, no matter how you look at it. So I guess we will see how much coaches really matter anyway. When I worked minor league spring training for the Dbacks 2 different years, we made note of how the front office looked like a bunch of frat boys. AJ Hinch, Josh Byrnes, etc etc. It's hard to describe, but stupid annoying stuff like wearing a visor upside down and backwards. I half expected them to start calling each other bro or bra, and randomly start high-fiving. Lots in the organization shook their head at their perceived lack of maturity.
  13. tmwiese55, last time I checked, NBA games take almost as long as MLB games, which take almost as long as NFL games. No idea on NHL games. I've met a few in AZ that love the Coyotes, but the challenge is just how spread out Phoenix is.
  14. I don't agree at all with the Vegas thoughts. Vegas folks are like AZ folks in that due to the transient nature, nobody is from there. However, Vegas folks have NOTHING to do. They don't gamble. They just work. The knock against Vegas is that the 2008 Economic meltdown slowed its growth. While it was on pace to be a viable city, it may not be there yet. I refer back to the Mitchell Report that stated that the top 3 markets for expansion by population are New York City, New York City, and Los Angeles. However, I don't see them being successful. I definitely feel Vegas, Portland, Charlotte, San Antonio, et al could be viable. The first issue though is getting the A's to San Jose.
  15. Nice to see Magnifico's velocity still there. We haven't heard reports since he was drafted, so sitting 95-98 is good to see. Wonder why he doesn't get more K's. Deception? off-speed?
  16. thanks for the support. I can't talk about the grades with another, but the golfer did speak to my team captain. She in turn spoke with me. We had a productive conversation (as productive as can be without directly discussing the grades issue). That led me to talk to the golfer that I had removed from the event. After a brief discussion, I offered that I could let her play today with several stipulations--all academically oriented--including understanding that failure to meet certain conditions will prevent her from playing in State. I also expressed that she owed a big thanks to her team captain for acting to help find an acceptable solution (true leadership). After clearing the air, she responded with a team-leading 79 today. Teammates have offered to help her in weak classes. It's up to her to take initiative. After speaking with a co-worker and expressing mixed feelings about "giving in," she responded that I didn't give in. I used it as a teachable moment and a chance to place strict requirements on her, which she agreed to. I appreciate her desire to win. I'm still not happy that her dad doesn't place importance on academics.
  17. sad, but he joins the other mid-round college picks to get excited about only in Helena...Tony Festa and Grant Richardson were two of the first for me. I've really lost enthusiasm with our failures on mid-round positional prospects
  18. An idea I always liked was city sharing. Perhaps place a team for half its games in Portland and half in Las Vegas. The crowds would be packed. It might be an operations challenge, but could be a way to ensure interest from smallish or weather-challenged cities
  19. when parents tell you that their child should play in a high school sports event that requires missing school, despite carrying 2 D's and 2 C's. This is the third straight year this student has struggled to make the grades in-season. The last two years I allowed her to play 1 day of the State Tournament (for golf) and I'm hoping she'll have decent enough grades to play both days this year. But for an upcoming tournament I decided I cannot have her missing school. Her dad angrily called and tried to demand that she be reinserted into the lineup or else there would be a meeting with the principal. After about 30 minutes, he was calm and understood what I was doing. But it was a buzzkill for a Friday to have to explain to a parent how their child's grades are not acceptable.
  20. Sedar is hard to peg. People blame him for running wild, then say he's too conservative. Realistically, the Brewers were awful at hitting in the first half. They couldn't string together singles and didn't walk enough, so that explains why the steal attempts were down....can't steal first.
  21. Portland already has a stadium. The AAA stadium was built/planned with plans for expansion that can increase size and capacity to MLB-quality.
  22. while the Canadian dollar has dropped lately, it's recent strength reversed one of the conditions that led to the Expos leaving and--at least temporarily--threatened the Jays. I've long wanted Portland, Las Vegas, and Montreal. Not sure if Mexico City can compete economically, but it would be interesting to add another team to the southwest. I wanted to do this expansion years ago, with Portland and Las Vegas as my favorites. 8 4-team divisions makes simply too much sense. Not sure if you'd continue with a wildcard round of sorts, though
  23. He may feel it's important to secure a minor league deal with the Brewers, while big league clubs won't be actively shopping for a fringe 5th starter yet.
  24. At this point I have no problem with Davis, Santana, and Braun in the OF next year. But if the value for Davis is there in a trade, I'd have no qualms making it.
  25. I still would like to see the Clark/Rogers platoon. I got criticized for saying it may match or outproduce Lind for a fraction of the cost, but I stand by it. I also like that both can play OF in a pinch, and Rogers can fill in at 3b on occasion (but by no means is a long-term solution). With DH games as well, it should be possible to get both of them 350-400 at bats next year, and I think their combined salary would be very efficient. Lind is a trade-chip approaching a contract year coming off a rare healthy season. I think Lind should help us land 2 talented prospects.
