  1. I would've preferred the full body barrelman on the hat. The close-up of the face is a little bizarre to me.
  2. I really don't want Lohse. I might be willing to try him without the draft pick compensation on a short term deal, but he strikes me as a fall of the table candidate and we'd be giving up a 1st round pick when we need to continue to re-build the farm system. While I could see him being better than Peralta, Fiers, Rogers, Estrada, I don't think he will be substantially better to warrant losing a 1st round pick. As for a backup 1B, I would love to see Carlos Lee in that role. We will need some RH PH thunder once Hart returns from the DL. I would want Gamel to still be the backup at 1B/RF/LF and my fear would be RR playing Lee over Gamel, but having pop from the right side in the form of EL Caballo would be nice.
  3. In Southern California, I have always used DirecTV. Typically, at the channel listing there are four channels for one game. For example, let's say the Brewers are playing the Cubs. 1 channel will be the Brewers feed in HD, 1 will be the Brewers feed in standard definition, 1 will be the Cubs feed in HD and 1 will be the Cubs feed in standard defintion. The only times there are not four channels, IIRC, is if the game is not being televised by one of the teams. I am surprised that Verizon doesn't provide the option of how you want to watch. As for other options, friends who are fans of non-Southern California teams have raved about MLB.tv on the PS3. I have only seen a few games on there but it seems to be just as good of quality as the DirecTV baseball package.
  4. As good as the Brewers FO usually is in marketing this team, I have to say that they have been generally underwhelming when it comes to listening to the majority of the fans who want a more permanent return to ball and glove logo. This contest was the perfect opportunity to introduce another uniform using that logo and instead they chose to further muddy the waters of the Brewers uniform identity by choosing a look that has no reference to the m with barley or the ball and glove logo. What is this team's identity? Seems like the players prefer the m with barley, the fans want ball and glove and the front office wants something different.
  5. What else can he say? "I guess I never expected to be this good. I should have never signed that deal. It cost me hundreds of millions of dollars." Seriously? He signed his extension in April 2011 when he already had 4+ years in the Majors, a $45m extension through 2015, a Rookie of the Year award, 3 all star appearances, 3 Silver Sluggers and a career BA of .300+ and 130+ HRs. I think he already knew how good he was and how much money he could be leaving on the table.
  6. His not regretting signing long term with Milwaukee speaks volumes about his understanding of his long term legacy in baseball. Instead of being just another guy who left for the largest dollar sign (Sabathia in New York, Fielder in Detroit, Greinke in Los Angeles), Braun will be the definition of a Milwaukee Brewer, just like Robin Yount . Braun, Tulowitzki, Longoria, McCutchen...I hope they all stay in their current markets and become the faces of a franchise the way that Yount, Ripken and Gwynn did before them.
  7. His arm must be shot and the ptential for another injury must be a real cause for concern. That is almost half of what he made last year.
  8. Being in a small market, I will be happy if the Brewers can consistently win between 80-85 games, with the occassional push to the low 90s and a playoff appearance every 3 years or so. To me this is the reality of the current economics of baseball and being in a small market. Even with the presence of the equally small market Reds and Pirates, we are likely not to be able to overcome the spending power of the Cubs and Cards without an incredibly saavy front office like the Rays. However, even wishing for the Rays type of saavy is difficult for me given the immense turnover on the roster every few years. I love continuity. I would have preferred to have Braun, Weeks, Fielder, Hardy & Hart comprise 5/8 of the starting lineup for a decade. Not because they all were HOF or the best at their positions, but because I long for the days when the economics allow for the Brewers to be rewarded for a few years of excellent drafting. I know this is unreasonable in the current marketplace but there is nothing like rooting for a team of homegrown players.
  9. Besides LaRoche and Desmond, who overproduced? Zimmerman, Werth, Morse and Espinosa were all below their career OPS. That is going to be a fun race to watch. What I will be really interested in is how the Phillies figure into the race. While I think the Nationals and Braves are the class of the NL East right now, the Phillies still have Halladay, Lee and Hamels. If Howard, Utley, Rollins and Michael Young can turn back the clock, stay healthy and play close to their career norms, this may turn into a three team race.
  10. Amen. As much as I would love to have Lawrie and his potential in our lineup for the next decade, I would rather have taken the sure thing 2011 NL Central championship, Morgan's walkoff Game 5 hit and the NLCS appearance.
  11. If the Mets can avoid the injury bug and get the April-June 2012 Johan Santana (98IP, 2.76 ERA through June 30) and a typical Shaun Marcum (3.6 ERA, 1.2 WHIP) season, they will have the makings of a potentially strong staff with Niese, Gee and Harvey. It's a shame for them that they do not have much of an offense to couple it with.
  12. Sorry to confuse -- I love that logo & agree with you on why. But BF.net has users that consistently bash it & accuse anyone who likes it of living in the past. Agreed TLB, and to me this is one of the more annoying arguments of the M with Barley vs. ball and glove. The love for the ball and glove has nothing to do with living in the past. Absolutely nothing to do with it. I could care less that the Brewers had their best season or best personalities in these uniforms in the 80s. It is simply a preference between the two. Like brwrsfan said above, the ball and glove "covers the sport, the city/team and it's awfully creative" and to me, is what the Brewers identity is. The current set, while not offensive, isn't the Brewers and there is nothing unique about it IMO. But that is my opinion. To state a generality that anyone who prefers the ball and glove is living in the past is a misinformed opinion.
  13. Interesting that 62% of the respondents (as of this posting) on the John and Cait blog prefer the Retro Brewers uniform. While not a scientific poll by any stretch of the imagination, the response does overwhlemingly support the ball and glove over any other uniform.
  14. That Atlanta lineup has some serious young talent: LF J Upton CF BJ Upton RF Heyward 1B Freeman SS Simmons Combine that with C McCann, 2B Uggla and anyone at 3B and they have the makings of a potentially devastating lineup. Additionally, having a Kimbrel, Venters, O'Flaherty, Walden bullpen...whew that's scary! It will all come to that staff and whether or not Medlen can continue to pitch like a #1, Beachy returns to health, Hudson continues to pitch well at 38 and Minor pitches like he did in the second half. Either way, its a great time to be a Braves fan.
  15. A couple things here: 1. I am a traditionalist who wants only white for home and gray for away. I would be ok with one white alternate (think chest patch like the Nationals or Yankees) for home and one blue alternate for away, but I think having as many uniforms as the Brewers do now are kind of overkill. While the gold is not hideous, we have way too many uniforms now IMO. 2. I find it interesting that the Brewers chosen finalists in the YOUniform contest do not incorporate any part of the current logo. This leads me to believe that the Brewers are going to switch it up. To me, the introduction of the gold jersey is a money grab for the current look before switching to something new. As I mentioned in the YOUniform thread, I think the Brewers are going to change uniforms after this season and that contest is the determining factor in how they will proceed. Ball and glove wins, I think you see a return to that. However, if the Barrelman hat jeresey wins, I think you could see a complete re-design of the current brand to something we haven't seen. Regardless, the introduction of the gold uniform for 2013 only furthers my belief that the team will be switching uniforms after this season and this is simply a money grab until they determine which direction they will go; back to their ball and glove roots or a complete re-design.
  16. We're re-signing Russell Branyan?!?!
  17. I just re-read the post on the John and Cait blog on Brewers.com and didn't realize the fan vote only consisted of one vote of eight total votes for the uniform contest. Here is the blurb again: With all these other entities involved, specifically New Era and Majestic, I am more convinced the ball and glove chest patch uniform will win. Majestic and New Era will vote for the uniform and hat most likely to be incorporated into a full time design or at least an alternate uniform to be worn during the season as it serves their bottom line. Given this and given that I for one do not believe the Brewers front office will change their current scheme to anything other than a return to a jersey which incorporates the ball and glove given the love for that logo, I do not see a way the yellow jersey or the completely re-designed Brewer jersey with the Barrelman hat wins. I of course have been clamoring for a return to the ball and glove for years, so my opinion may be a little biased. We'll see Sunday though.
  18. A hefty raise for Gomez. I still wouldn't rule out a contract extension for Carlos before the season barring him being asked for in a trade for a pitcher.
  19. I am still confused about where this is going to go. To the CF side of the Dew Deck? Won't that be behind the tower with the clock on it?
  20. This is awesome. I love when players do stuff like this and recognize the impact they have on kids. Well done Andrew. Well done.
  21. You must hate the ball and glove logo because I will absolutely shocked if the one with the ball and glove logo on the chest doesn't win. I've felt for years that it is only a matter of time before they go back and this will be just another step in the process.
  22. I am very ok with the one that has the ball and glove logo on the breast. I have always thought that if the Brewers every returned to the ball and glove on a full time basis, a jersey such as this would work well. Love the stirrups but hate the Seattle Pilots/Milwaukee Brewers numbering.
  23. Starlin Castro's comp is Robin Yount...that's an interesting assessment.
  24. Barring a dramatic falloff in Spring Training, I think the bench could be almost carved in stone already: C: Maldonado 1B/OF: Gamel SS: Bianchi OF: Schafer 2B/3B/1B: Green I for one would like to see a RH power hitting bat off the bench because frankly I don't see the Brewers using Maldonado or Bianchi given the inability of the other backups to play C or SS. I just wish we could combine Green and Bianchi into one player that can play all IF positions like a Hairston or Counsell could, which would then open a spot for this RH hitter.
  25. Totally irrelevant. Prince and Rickie grew up together and are great friends. Maybe...but Prince didn't take a below market contract to stay in Milwaukee like Braun did. I agree that it is exceptionally unlikely that Melvin would think this way but it could play a factor in keeping Braun happy. Like I said, it was just a thought.
