  1. He will always be one of my favorite Brewers players ever, such a special talent and personality. He was one of the only bright parts in those rebuilding years. The roster was pretty good in 2013 and 2014, comparable (on paper) to the last 3 years. The Gomez trade basically started the rebuilding years of 2015 and 2016.
  2. I wish that I was the only guy to not vote for Derek Jeter.
  3. There is even a decent possibility that the pieces we get after trading him in a couple of years amount to more than the pieces we traded for him. That is how buying low and selling high works, and that is how a market like Milwaukee will win a World Series. Milwaukee will not win a WS by continually signing 31+ yr olds at "highest bidder" prices (and especially highest bidder years).
  4. I don't think anybody saw much in Faria. I imagine the Brewers were the only ones to offer even a minor league deal. He's been awful for two consecutive years and getting worse. 2018: 5.40 ERA/5.08 FIP - 1.43 WHIP - 4.6 BBs/9 2019: 6.75 ERA/6.75 FIP - 2.14 WHIP - 5.8 BBs/9 No one had the opportunity to offer him a minor league deal. He went through waivers, which means that if no MLB was willing to add him to their 40-man roster, he automatically stays in the Brewers' organization on a minor league deal. He doesn't have enough service time to elect free agency. And since he has no options remaining, whichever team picked him up off waivers would actually have to add him to the 25-man roster or outright/waive him again before sending him down.
  5. Gyorko, Lutz, Ray, Burnes, Ashby, Zavolas and Antoine Kelly for Arenado and $50M ($20M for 20-21. If opt out is exercised we get to choose to get Lutz, Ashby, Zavolas or Kelly back as a PTBNL. If he stays with us we get $6M/yr from 22-26).
  6. I'd make all the steroid guys wait for a little bit longer--til they are off the main ballot. Let the veterans committee have a "steroid era" ballot 10 years from now where they start to let them in 2 at a time. Bonds and Clemens in 2030 or so, then Sosa and Mcgwire, then Ramirez and ARod then Palmeiro and Ortiz. Something like that. McGwire and Palmeiro are already off the ballot...Shouldn't the rest of them have to wait until those guys get in?
  7. Pat Murphy was previously a finalist for the Mets job, no? CC has been doing this long enough now that he should be fine, but he sure leaned on Murphy his first coupla years, and it would be no fun to lose your security/comfort blanket.
  8. Apparently Andruw Jones' kid, Druw Jones, is a big-time prep prospect. He was just on MLB Network and said the Brewers were his favorite team. Sounds like a cool kid.
  9. It looks to me like Deolis Guerra is basically a goner (or he accepts a minor league assignment off the 40 man at the end of ST after being DFA'd). His 40 man roster spot is more than expendable considering that he is out of options and unlikely to be good enough to stay rostered all year. After that, I'd think that Taylor Williams and Ronny Rodriguez are the next guys to go? Then Tyrone Taylor? All of them have options though, so they might have at least some minimal trade value for a desperate team with open 40 man spots. RR was waived/DFA'd in Dec. though, so he probably has no trade value right now (as otherwise the Tigers would have flipped him for cash/lottery ticket/PTBNL). After that you've got Ray Black, who will very likely be given every opportunity to succeed/fail at the big league level until mid-May anyways. If we don't acquire anybody else, Guerra would be in this same sink or swim boat as well. I'm trying to figure out how likely we are to add guys to the 40 before April. It looks like we have 1 basically open spot (Guerra), and another 2 spots that are easily opened up even if it means DFAing guys with options (TWill and RR). That's probably plenty of flexibility for now.
  10. This is an excellent comparison, but I disagree with your conclusion. Just because Rendon's is a bad contract doesn't make the Donaldson contract a "steal." Donaldson got a fair contract for himself and for an American League team. Rendon got a monster contract for himself that will almost certainly become an albatross for whoever is going to be paying him 4+ years from now. He'll have to remain an MVP caliber player from ages 33-38 just to make the contract close to fair. That will almost certainly not happen, which makes it a bad contract. If Donaldson remains an all star to above average player then his contract will work out. If he get hurt or regresses to average or worse than it is also a bad contract.
  11. Along with having a solid 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017(though inj.), 2018, and 2019 minor league career. And being 22 years old. And the near fact that in today's MLB climate, anybody with bat to ball skills like that will almost inevitably develop more power as they mature (if they try to, anyway). I love Arraez, and I love him even more if the fact that he's never been an elite prospect makes him cheaper to attain. Could somebody explain the difference in prospect status between Luis Urias and Luis Arraez? How cool would it be to have a pair of near homophones with near identical profiles manning the middle infield for the next 6 years? We'd have to nickname them Righty and Lefty or something like that.
  12. If Potter had been eligible the whole season they could be a top 10 team right now. They didn't have any close wins in that stretch (thus there is no way Potter's poor defense/taking time from Reuvers+ would have caused a loss), and there is a very good chance they win against St. Mary's and perhaps flip 1-3 of the Richmond, New Mex, NCSt and Rutgers losses to wins. Realistically they are a true 6-9 seed with a ceiling of a 3 seed and a floor of a play-in game. The odds of them tanking to the point of missing the tourney are about the same as the odds of winning the B1G and getting a 1 seed (have to nearly run the table for that). Neither of those are going to happen.
  13. This makes my point better than I could- thanks for that! It does seem to me that 3TO-type players are becoming overvalued in the present baseball market. Shifts are also reducing their effectiveness to a degree as well. Perhaps the market ineffciency is the players who hit for contact well, and spray the ball to all fields, but who lack power. There are a lot of HOFers with this profile, yet even Altuve hit 30 home runs last year. Rod Carew, Wade Boggs and Tony Gwynn are relics of a bygone era...
  14. I have to disagree. The NIT is the ceiling for this group. You just can't win with the guards that they have Unless they are playing Tennessee, Ohio State or Penn State...on the road. Or Indiana. Or Marquette. Or Illinois (shoulda won). So they CAN win. It just doesn't seem like they SHOULD win. Then they go out and win. Obviously the ceiling is much higher than the NIT though. NIT should be the floor.
  15. Because we are a fan base laments our bad luck by asking "why we don't deserve good things." Then spends 2 months discussing how we can trade away our good things. Frankly I'm stunned we haven't seen more: Trade Yelich while he still has value. Trade Woodruff because he's not acey enough and we got to get an ace. Trade Hiura for magic beans. Some people hate success. Our record in games where Hader has pitched in the last 2 years. 48-7 51-10 5-3 in the playoffs despite 11 innings and a 1.64 ERA. 7.2 innings of ZERO runs vs the Dodgers in a series. His 1st runs allowed being against Washington. 99-17... we'll just replace him. We need a 3b afterall and after trading him we'll just need a bullpen. If we trade Hader it won't be about making the 2020 team better. It'll be about making the 2021-8 teams a lot better while trying to stay competitive in 2020. Those other guys you mentioned are pretty much sure things and building block type guys who it doesn't make sense to trade and stay competitive. Hader is a flashy reliever who might garner a huge return from the right partner, and might flame out (expensively) if we keep him.
  16. I'd be happy enough with acquiring Jed Lowrie if his health checks out. Play the hot bat between him and Healy and Sogard. He should be extremely cheap to acquire and yet he won't be a long term (or even a mid-term) liability. Has a high upside, and should be versatile enough to be valuable even if he doesn't hit like he can. The only way to do significantly better than Lowrie would be to trade Hader, which I'd be fine with assuming the return is more than cromulent.
  17. If anybody wants to help fill the rest of this matrix in, please do. I'll try to correct any mistakes, but it's fairly self explanatory. Just enter the date the game will occur in the correct cell. The color coding and order of standings is incorrect right now, but I'll update it correctly once all the cells/dates are filled in. Thx. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1U6vZzF33hLDxE8DdPM-bjd2GxarfDb_mhFlAmP_aU_4/edit#gid=0
  18. This is the worst season of college BB that I've ever seen. Nobody cares anymore. When a good player like Amir Coffey would rather play in the G-League than get a degree (for free) and possibly lead his hometown college to a nice season and possible NCAA run, you know that things are different. The B1G is full of good coaches and mediocre teams...and they are BY FAR the best conference in the country. That's all it takes. I don't really get it, as players now are better than they've ever been, but for some reason the overall quality of basketball just isn't very good. The lack of great upperclassmen is probably finally catching up to the NCAAs as anybody who is good enough leaves for greener pastures ASAP. The NBA/CBB NEEDS to adopt a similar system to the MLB and/or the NFL and make guys who go to school stay in school for at least 3 year following HS--and let them be draft eligible out of HS. The farce of "student" athletes in basketball might eve be worse than football, which is saying something. All of that said, I think it only benefits a team like the Badgers. They play to win every day and Gard will have a gameplan to get that specific task done against every team they face. Beating a top 5 team on the road is no small feat.
  19. Forgive me if I'm feeling pedantic and in the posting mood tonight, but the "pythagorean record" doesn't make any preseason predictions. I'm not a fan of the stat, as if Hernan Perez pitches in 12 losses in a year with a 36.00 ERA and the crew loses those 12 games by 100 total runs, it is still 12 losses in the standings, but the pythagorean record probably counts it as 40 losses or so (*no, I don't have any idea how many losses it says there should be, but it's definitely a lot more than 12)

  23. I kinda disagree. I think the Garcia deal might be the big deal. Smoak, Sogard, and Anderson were not negligible deals either the way that say, Ryon Healy's is negligible. Another middling contract ($5-$10M/yr either via FA or trade) seems more likely to me than a bigger splash. I hope I'm wrong.

  25. I haven't minded any of the moves Stearns has made individually. They have all made enough sense to kinda shrug and hope for the best as there hasn't been a lot of downside to any of them. However, I was/am hoping that we could make some trades to pick up more guys like Urias and Lauer rather than filling the roster with 1 or 2 yr FAs. We need to get younger cost controlled players to really build something solid to win consistently year after year.
