  1. I think baseball would be better if there were no outfield fences. There. I said it.
  2. All that crap is so dumb. I wish some commissioner would just issue a 2 month suspension for the next guy who does it and finally put an end to it once and for all. They're so hypocritical about it. All this "let the kids play" stuff, and the first chance they get to make a real statement about it, it's the usual 5 game suspension, which for a starter is basically no suspension. About the only way to put an end to it once and for all is either what you said, or go ahead and charge the next guy who admits to headhunting with criminal assault charges, neither of which they will do. And you guys think the headhunters are Draconian hypocrites!
  3. He completely destroyed his shoulder (kind of an important tendon and muscle grouping for an MLB pitcher) and hasn't pitched for 20 months or so (and that was with a healthy shoulder). He's kind of starting over as far was what it feels like to throw again. I'll be shocked if he is ready after 4 or 5 minor league starts, but if he is that would be great.
  4. Grandal even surprised himself when he caught that high outside FB to Harper. Harper is on pace for 215 Ks.
  5. Aguilar is 10/30 with 9 BBs and 8 Ks in May. He looks to have righted the ship even if the power hasn't quite come around yet.
  6. Harper is going to be walked a lot less if he can't even touch those center cut FBs. Then he'll start hitting dingers...then he'll start getting walked...then he'll go cold...then he'll get a bunch of center cut FBs... I hate 3TO players.
  7. Are the 10 day and 60 day ILs only relevant between opening day and the last day of the season? I thought one could begin "serving time" on either IL list at some point in January or February, not on the first day of the season. While they are on the IL list, I don't think they can appear in any MiLB re-hab games (or Spring Training games). There is specifically a separate "post-IL" re-hab stint that is on a different timeline than the actual IL lists. Since he has appeared in minor league rehab games I don't think they can retroactively put Nelson on the 60 day IL unless they want to keep him out of all games for another 60 days. They'd have to put him back on the 10 day IL where he couldn't pitch for 10 days, then begin another minor league re-hab stint that could last up to 30 days. I'm not positive on any of this though. EDIT: Players CAN still rehab in the minors as part of their IL stints. I don't know what would happen if they get re-injured while rehabbing--I suppose they would have to go on the minor league 7-day IL and then re-set their rehab clock (20 days for position players, 30 days for pitchers)?
  8. I think Nelson has actually been on the 10-day IL since his injury. I have no idea why. There is no IL in the offseason, so he'd have to take up a spot on the 40 man during that time no matter what, but I have no idea why he was on the 10 day IL all of last year.
  9. Yeah, that's a really shortsighted post. Cain has had a rough two weeks after a stellar, consistent, 8 year career with Gold Glove defense in centerfield. The main problems are Shaw, Shaw, Aguilar, and Shaw. Everybody else has been fine on the whole and have had stretches of excellence this year. Grandal's defense is slightly worrisome, but his switch hitting, excellent approach at the plate and the ability to hit lots of homers in bunches more than makes up for it. Thames is similar (but worse) and is relied upon less. Perez is there for utility defense, enabling us to roster guys like Shaw and Thames. Any offense from him is basically a bonus (and he has some pop and some speed which are luxurious tools for a bench super utility guy). Braun is Braun. Again, Shaw and Aguilar are the only issues.
  10. He has gone 8 IP though. This year, even. Out of the Phillies top 5 in the order, only Harper is a lefty, so there isn't a great advantage in using an opener as he is the only high quality lefty he might face a 3rd time through in an average start. Still, if he struggles with command in his first inning, it would have been nice to be facing 6-9 in the order rather than 1-5+.
  11. Who is this woman announcer for ESPN? What are her credentials that make her qualified to be in that booth? I don't mind having gals call these games but I was just wondering.... I'm not really a fan. Actually, I would be okay with a woman play-by-play announcer. It just seems weird to have an analyst for a sport that they never played (Softball is close, sure...still not baseball. Little League doesn't quite count either)
  12. Bingo. No need to go in with high spikes, just do a regular pop up slide and Descalso would have a shin full of spikes.
  13. If Shaw starts to hit and nobody gets hurt, then there isn't a spot for Hiura on the roster for the rest of the summer. Then you start to think about bringing him up at the end of August for a month+playoffs--Then starting him off in AAA next year until June or so. That would gain an 8th year of control for the Brewers--but would quite obviously be service time manipulation if he continues to hit like he has. Although he is still pretty green at 2nd base, so the Brewers could use the excuse that his glove needed more seasoning at AAA--and that likely wouldn't be an incorrect position to take.
  14. I thought the timing would have been right to bring him up for this series due to the matchups (3 lefties), it being the Cubs (important games), and our rested bullpen (off day on Thursday before the series) which would have allowed us to carry 12 pitchers. Once we needed 13 pitchers we could have sent him back down--and it wouldn't have been too weird regarding service time manipulation as we don't have any other bats we could/should send down (except Shaw, but he's a lefty and is established thus makes more sense to keep on the roster than Hiura for most games. As it turned out, the 15 inning game meant we did need the 13th pitcher (although if Perez wasn't playing 2nd, perhaps we lose 1-0 in 9 innings instead). Anyways, I think the window has passed for his cup of coffee (unless we have another stretch of games against a lot of lefties in the next month, in which case perhaps we swap him out for Shaw for a week or so over that stretch if Shaw hasn't come around yet).
  15. Hernan Perez can play anywhere. He is not preventing a Hiura callup nor would Hiura prevent Perez from playing if needed. Also, Perez had a nice day but to say what he did is "way" more productive than anything Hiura could have done is certainly a bit of hyperbole. Kinda. We ended up losing today, so it's much easier to say that. Hiura can't DH, and there have been more than a couple plays this series that a poor-ish defensive second basemen wouldn't have made.
  16. Hernan Perez has been invalvuable this series: and this is coming from a guy who thought they should bring Hiura up. His defense and and dinger today are likely WAY more productive than whatever Hiura could have done. All those DPs look great when they are converted...
  17. WP Kinsella could write a novel about this game.
  18. This is true--but Aguilar actually looks competent most of the time. Has an excellent 2 strike approach. Shaw hasn't hit a ball hard since April--and he was hitting poorly then too.
