  1. You and I had the complete opposite reaction. Not a fan of the Navy uniform, everything else is fine. I loved the cursive Milwaukee from the 80’s and early 90’s, but don’t like the way it looks in yellow on the Navy jersey. I actually like the baseball with barley seams. Hate the Nike logo on MLB uniforms.
  2. This is a little random, but if sign stealing really is rampant across MLB it seems that Brent Suter’s tempo is the perfect counter. He goes into his pitching motion fairly quickly after receiving the catchers signal and relentlessly continues to work fast between pitches.
  3. Took a closer look at some of the publications that attempt to predict MLB free agent contracts. Below are their various predictions for Grandal and Moustakas. Yasmani Grandal Free Agent Contract Predictions MLB Trade Rumors: 4 years, $68 million ($17 million AAV) The Athletic (Jim Bowden): 3 years, $57 million ($19 million AAV) Fangraphs (Kiley McDaniel): 4 years, $70 million ($17.5 million AAV) Fangraphs (Crowdsource): 3 years, $48 million ($16 million AAV) New York Post: 4 years, $65 million ($16.25 million AAV) SB Nation: 3 years, $50 million ($16.66 million AAV) Bleacher Report: 4 years, $90 million ($22.5 million AAV) Mike Moustakas Free Agent Contract Predictions MLB Trade Rumors: 2 years, $20 million ($10 million AAV) The Athletic (Jim Bowden): 2 years, $24 million ($12 million AAV) Fangraphs (Kiley McDaniel): 2 years, $32 million ($16 million AAV) Fangraphs (Crowdsource): 3 years, $36 million ($12 million AAV) New York Post: 2 years, $25 million ($12.5 million AAV) SB Nation: 3 years, $38 million ($12.66 million AAV) Bleacher Report: N/A
  4. The part you’re leaving out though is Darvish was seemingly acknowledging that the video clip was indeed related to his quotes in an Los Angeles Times article from earlier today. Here is the screenshot of the part of the article where he is presumably talking about the Brewers...
  5. Regardless of the lost draft pick I think this is a great deal for the Braves. I won’t be surprised if Will Smith ends up being one of the top performers from this years free agent class.
  6. Completely agree. Who would have guessed that a Cardinals beat guy was told “by multiple players” that the Brewers are one of the teams stealing signs electronically. [sarcasm]I wonder what organization those multiple players are with, maybe a division rival of the Brewers?[/sarcasm]
  7. He credited his resurgence with a late career swing change. If you're interested in hearing about it from Pence himself check out this Effectively Wild Podcast starting just after the 55-minute mark.
  8. The logo appears to have transformed from an infielders glove into an outfield mitt.
  9. From the MLBTR site the other day, Blue Jays’ Catchers Drawing Trade Interest I doubt the Blue Jays would be open to actually trading Danny Jansen, but Reese McGuire, entering his age-25 season, may be a more realistic trade target. If they were looking to take a shot on someone who is still probably a year away, Riley Adams seems sort of interesting.
  10. Thanks for sharing, certainly a little out there in terms of writing style. Also not a great sign when someone is claiming the 4th best prospect in your entire system is a guy who was signed as a minor league free agent three days ago.
  11. Well if you believe three seasons of Bogaerts is just as valuable as the next three years of Yelich than I can understand why you would think that.
  12. I don’t think it is quite as ridiculous as you are implying. If you want to quibble with the Burnes/Turang part of the package, I completely understand (swap out for Peralta, Grisham, etc.), but I don’t think Keston Hiura as a centerpiece to a deal for Bogaerts is ridiculous at all. The Red Sox project to exceed the Luxury Tax threshold for a third year in row. Every year they exceed the tax their financial penalty becomes increasingly steep. Their penalties from this past season totaled more than $13 million. It has seemingly been made clear at this point that one of Bloom’s directives is to get the team’s payroll back under control. Another concept being floated by many (including Ken Rosenthal) is that the Red Sox are willing to package some of their more attractive trade chips with a bloated contract such as David Price, Nate Eovaldi, or to a lesser extent Dustin Pedroia. Their farm system is pretty barren, so in order to pull off that type of maneuver it would likely require a veteran star such as Bogaerts or Betts. Unfortunately for the Brewers that type of move seems less feasible.
  13. I missed the opt out after 2022. It does seem very likely at this point he will exercise it in three years if he continues to play anywhere near his current level. I guess it also makes it slightly more plausible the Red Sox would be open to trading him. I edited the initial post to reflect the correction.
  14. Both players are 24 years old. Alexander Palma originally signed with the New York Yankees on 7/2/12 for $800,000 as an international free agent out of Miranda, Venezuela. Luis Castro was in the Rockies organization and this past season 2080 Baseball published the following scouting notes on Castro:
  15. There has been increasing buzz this week that with Chaim Bloom coming in to steer the Red Sox baseball operations department the team is going to focus on shedding payroll. One way to accomplish that feat, as has been rumored, would be to trade shortstop Xander Bogaerts who is entering his age-27 season next year. He is under contract through 2025 (but is able to opt out after 2022), with a vesting option for 2026. His contract signed last March pays him exactly $20 million per season through the life of the contract. If Bogaerts is indeed attainable via trade would you be okay with the Brewers making the following offer: Here is a more detailed look at the salaries, years of service, and projected surplus values (including low/high ends): What do you think, if he is available via trade do the Brewers have enough to entice the Red Sox?
  16. The Steamer Projections for 2020 came out earlier this week. Currently only 10 Brewers position players are being projected to get meaningful playing time, so obviously that will change as additional position player acquisitions occur. If you’re curious, below are the highest projected free agents (in order of projected WAR).
  17. As JMB mentioned, he listed anywhere from one to seven teams considered "best fits" for each free agent. The Brewers were listed for nearly every SP that wasn't among his top three (Cole, Strasburg, Bumgarner). The Brewers were listed among the best fits for Zack Wheeler, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Yasmani Grandal, Jake Odorizzi, Cole Hamels, Dallas Keuchel, Mike Moustakas, Michael Pineda, Kyle Gibson, Rick Porcello, Drew Pomeranz, Rich Hill, and Tanner Roark. He didn't include Julio Teheran in his top 35 free agents, but I am guessing that is because many weren't expecting Teheran to become a free agent until his option was declined yesterday.
  18. Fangraphs included an interesting addition to the Starting Pitching names in their 2020 Top 50 Free Agents article...
  19. The MLB Trade Rumors prediction to this question...
  20. Similarly Jim Bowden of The Athletic wrote a piece titled Ranking the top 35 free agents, and predicting their contracts and best fits in which he listed Grandal as the 10th best free agent and predicted a 3 year deal for $57 million ($19 million AAV). He listed the best fits as being the Brewers, Reds, Astros, and Rays.
  21. MLB Trade Rumors released their 2019-20 Top 50 MLB Free Agents With Predictions. Here is their prediction for Grandal who they rank as the 7th best free agent...
  22. Add Julio Teherán to the free agent starting pitcher list now that Atlanta declined his $12 million option.
  23. Dominic Smith was the first thing that went through my mind when I saw this news. My bold prediction for the Brewers off-season is that Dominic Smith is the starting first baseman on Opening Day 2020.
  24. So because he wasn't in an arbitrary Top 30 list, it means he isn't a prospect? Dude was drafted in the 6th round two years ago. I mean, he's not some sort of otherworldly get, but there is value there. Well he did make the Jays Journal preseason top 30 list. Baseball Trade Values had Chase Anderson's value at $0.0 and Chad Spanberger's value at $0.2 million ($200K), so according to their valuation system the Brewers scored a net gain on the trade.
