  1. Nice to see Manny Piña with an important home run. He has been a bit of an afterthought this year, but great to see him come up big in that spot.
  2. Brewers 1st round draft pick, LHP Ethan Small, is on the mound tonight in the NCAA Super Regionals versus Stanford at 7 PM on ESPNEWS.
  3. I'm bumping this thread because speculation is growing once again that the Indians may look to trade Bauer before the July 31st deadline. Bauer is a player I am conflicted about whether I would even want the Brewers to pursue, but I think he would provide a consistent anchor within the rotation for the next 1.5 seasons. I think the cost would be something along the lines of Burnes and Turang. Would be curious to hear if others consider him a feasible or even a desirable trade target?
  4. Hernan Perez started a game batting in the 4th spot just once last season, it was the 3rd game (of the infamous 5 game sweep) in Pittsburgh before the All Star break. That series was the low point of the season, but things obviously soon turned around from there. Also, thankfully this is only a 3-game series!
  5. For those interested here is Jimmy Nelson's velocity data from last night's outing... Brooks Baseball Player Card: Jimmy Nelson Looks like his fastball was an average of about 2 mph slower than where he left off while his sinker was 1.5 mph slower, and his slider and curve were both about 3 mph less. Obviously it is way too early to make any definitive assertions, but something worth tracking has he continues down the comeback trail.
  6. Although he's had reverse splits this season, over his career Peralta has fared much better against right handed hitters. Even if that hasn't exactly been the case this year it is nice to see a lineup full of mostly right handed bats facing him today.
  7. From July 23rd through the end of the postseason these were Kimbrel's stats... 31.1 IP 19 H 23 BB 43 K 18 ER 5.20 ERA 1.35 WHIP 12.45 K/9 6.66 BB/9 Prior to that point he was putting together another fantastic season. As you mentioned, it is difficult to know what to make of it, if anything.
  8. Regarding the payroll discrepancies on pitching, it wasn’t meant to be a pot shot at the Brewers by any means. The Cubs have spent a lot of money on pitching, and I think that has been part of their plan all along (develop position players and pay for pitching). It hasn’t always appeared to be money well spent for them, but as we sit here in early June they have the third best team ERA in the National League behind only the Dodgers and Reds (those are the only three teams with sub-4.00 ERAs). I think Kimbrel was a very good addition for them, but it certainly isn’t without risk, either.
  9. LHP Caleb Smith has been one of the best starting pitchers in baseball this season. He has an 11.8 K/9 rate and a WHIP of just 0.967. If there is any weakness it is that he has been somewhat HR prone (10 home runs allowed in 61 IP). The Brewers actually drafted Smith in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft, but they immediately traded his rights away to the Cubs. In my opinion, it’s games like today against a tough lefty that the absence of Keston Hiura’s bat in the lineup feels like real void. Regardless, here’s to hoping the Brewers can salvage the final game out of this disastrous Marlins series.

  11. With adding in Kimbrel’s $10 million for 2019, the Cubs are now paying pitchers on their major league roster a total of just over $140 million this season. By comparison the Brewers have just over $41 million invested in their entire pitching staff this season. The amount each team is spending on position players is actually pretty comparable, but the Cubs have $99 million more than the Brewers being spent on pitchers.
  12. Billy Wagner was the first one to come to mind.
  13. Per Jeff Passan... Craig Kimbrel could be with the Chicago Cubs sooner than later. In recent workouts showcasing his stuff for teams, Kimbrel has been electric. His physical is Thursday, sources tell ESPN, and him joining the Cubs before June 20 is a realistic goal.
  14. According to Jon Heyman it’s $43 million over three years.
  15. Per Ken Rosenthal... BREAKING: #Cubs in agreement with free-agent closer Craig Kimbrel, pending physical, sources tell The Athletic.
  16. I don’t want to come across as Mr. Negativity here, but tomorrow’s pitching matchup is extremely favorable for the Marlins (Caleb Smith versus Freddy Peralta). At the current moment it would be hard to bet against a series sweep for the Marlins at Miller Park.
  17. Someone must have graduated off the list today because Hiura is now up to #16 and Turang listed at #99. Moving on up! I was curious how many 2018 draftees made the updated BA Top 100 list, so here you go... 12. Casey Mize (#1 pick) 18. Joey Bart (#2 pick) 30. Jarred Kelenic (#6 pick) 39. Jonathan India (#5 pick) 42. Nolan Gorman (#19 pick) 43. Alec Bohm (#3 pick) 47. Matthew Liberatore (#16 pick) 48. Jordan Groshans (#12 pick) 50. Nico Hoerner (#24 pick) 56. Nick Madrigal (#4 pick) 57. Brady Singer (#18 pick) 64. Grayson Rodriguez (#11 pick) 76. Ryan Weathers (#7 pick) 94. Daniel Lynch (#34 pick) 96. Trevor Larnach (#20 pick) 99. Brice Turang (#21 pick) 100. Triston Casas (#26 pick) So 17 of last year’s selections made the top 100, only three were drafted after the Brewers selection at #21 (Hoerner to Cubs, Lynch to Royals, Casas to Red Sox). The highest pick that signed and began their professional career from the 2018 MLB draft to not make the top 100 is Travis Swaggerty (#10 pick) taken by the Pirates. Two higher selections weren’t ranked, but for obvious reasons, Carter Stewart (#8 pick) was unsigned and Kyler Murray (#9 pick) was the first overall pick in the NFL draft. Obviously when this year’s draftees are eventually added some of these players will likely be pushed to just outside the top 100.
  18. Those last two called strikes on Gamel are among the worst I have ever seen in a major league game, and I don’t mean that as hyperbole.

  20. One thing that plagued Kimbrel late last season were walks. Over his last 30 innings pitched (including the playoffs) he walked 23 batters. It will be interesting to see if that was just a small blip or continues to be an issue moving forward.
  21. They also traded away a draft pick for LHP Alex Claudio, so I am counting it as seven LHP added to the organization via this year's draft so far. One emphasis early on with the current regime was adding left handed bats, and now it seems like they want to build up the reserves with more more southpaws.
