  1. Rewind to the 2017 season. The Brewers were reportedly on the verge of trading for Quintana (presumably giving up Brinson) when the Cubs swooped in at the 11th hour with a stronger offer. Imagine how different things could possible be right now if Theo hadn’t outbid Stearns for Q.
  2. This is admittedly a weird comparison because they aren’t necessarily similar profiles, but I am starting to wonder if Kris Bryant’s career trajectory is going to go the way of Will Clark. Looked like a Hall of Farmer into his mid-20’s, and then never fully realized that potential in his late 20’s and beyond.
  3. I think the Descalso signing is going to prove a success for the Cubs. He was my hopeful under the radar short-term signing for the Brewers second base situation earlier in the offseason.
  4. I don’t want to jinx it, but Jordan Baker has been very consistent (and seemingly accurate) with his strike zone so far tonight. One of my personal favorites, Jerry Layne, the umpire at 2B tonight.
  5. Happy getting two runs and a high Quintana pitch count right out of the gate in the 1st inning, but it seems like there was some missed opportunity there as well.
  6. Love the high fastball on Bryant’s swinging strike three. High fastballs and sliders away seem to be the recommended way to pitch him these days.
  7. Let me preface with the fact that the following may prove to just be a dumb over generalization based on pitcher and batter handedness. My Mildly Warm Take: I get the sense that as the rosters are currently constructed the Cubs will have success head-to-head against the Brewers this season (as in win the season series), but that the Brewers will have better success against the rest of the teams in the NL Central as compared to the Cubs versus those same teams.
  8. By the end of the weekend the Brewers and Cubs could be separated in the standings by as many as 7.5 games or as few as 1.5 games.

  10. From Mike Petriello of MLB.com (Statcast)...
  11. I realize it is far too early in the season to put any stock in these whatsoever, but regardless the current Baseball Prospectus Playoff Odds are a thing of beauty. Something to enjoy with a smile on the off day. Edit: The FanGraphs Playoff Odds aren’t quite as bullish on the Brewers just yet.
  12. Watched the last few innings of that game and it was an utter pleasure to witness yet another Cubs bullpen implosion.
  13. Here are the details of his outing: Freddy Peralta's PITCHf/x for April 3, 2019 Looks like he threw 5 pitches that exceeded 96-mph, and 1 that hit 97-mph. He had 90 total pitches that registered as fastballs (average velocity of 93-mph), but I am skeptical they correctly identified between his fastball and change-up. Either way, he was changing up his pitch speeds continually from between 89-mph to 96-mph.
  14. I think that may be the case as well. I know somebody else mentioned Peralta having the lowest floor and ceiling, however in my opinion he has the lowest floor but the highest ceiling so there could be some peaks and valleys. Peralta certainly seems to have the widest range of potential outcomes at this point. I could see an argument for Burnes having a higher ceiling as a starter, but Woodruff is the closest to being at the "what you see is what you get" stage of his career development.
  15. Lineups are out (available in the initial post). With Lorenzo Cain getting a day of rest Ben Gamel moves into the lead-off spot. For his career Gamel has a .301 BA / .349 OBP / .444 SLG (.793 OPS) when hitting in the first spot in the order (sample of 147 plate appearances).
  16. Small samples across the board, but Orlando Arcia has been the Brewers’ hitter with the most past success against Castillo (6-for-11 with a double). Freddy Peralta had two starts in Cincinnati last year (July 1st and August 29th) and gave up runs early in both. Here’s hoping the third time is the charm!

  18. Isn’t that what Baseball Prospectus or Fangraphs had them at? My Cubs fan coworkers in AZ are panicking. No, Baseball Prospectus’ initial projections (via PECOTA) didn’t have them breaking 80 wins.... In all seriousness, I think it did quickly adjust to move the Cubs up to an 80 win projection.
