  1. Enjoyed having a thread last year to track the standings and playoff odds throughout the season (Link), so lets do it again. To begin, FiveThirtyEight updated their preseason odds this morning and the Brewers are listed as having the third highest chance of making the playoffs in the National League. They also have the highest playoff odds of any team in the NL Central, and are slight favorites to edge out the Cardinals for the division championship. Here is a screenshot of the preseason odds currently up on the site for all teams...

  5. I may have missed that, but we should know today since he is pitching at Salt River Fields which is the AZ Spring Training park with publicly available data including pitch velocity and movement. The outing details should be on Brooks Baseball baseball by tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up! Here are the details of Freddy’s outing from yesterday: March 24th Outing Link It appears he was mostly between 93 to 95-mph with the fastball, but did touch 96-mph on a couple of occasions. One thing to keep in mind is Brooks Baseball measures velocity from 55-ft (as opposed to 50-ft), so their pitch speeds are always a slight tick higher than other resources.

  7. Limiting it to just sluggers you have: David Ortiz Nelson Cruz Goldschmidt’s top two Baseball Reference career similarity scores through their age-30 seasons are Jeff Bagwell and Adrian Gonzalez. Both of those hitters maintained health and hitting prowess until around age-34/35.
  8. I’ll be a little surprised if Goldschmidt goes into some rapid decline in his early 30’s. I would bet on him to still produce at a high level for at least the next three seasons, which aligns with the same timeframe the Brewers are going to be competing with them for the NL Central title. I would have much preferred that the Cardinals weren’t able to extend Goldschmidt even if it means a year or two at the end of the contract where he might be less productive.
  9. Even if the Brewers do have the framework for a deal in place with Kimbrel my guess is there would still be a delay while the team reviews his medicals and possibly have him undergo a team led physical before anything is cemented. Can’t imagine they would finalize a pricey pitcher signing without 100% assurance there is nothing concerning in the arm or shoulder.
  10. Knebel has some dead arm. It happens to pretty all pitchers at some point. According to Robert Murray a team source termed the Knebel issue as a “tired arm”. Knebel downplayed it and Counsell refused to say anything about it. So at this point which of these relief pitchers will first throw a regular season pitch for the Brewers in 2019, Jeffress, Knebel, or Kimbrel?
  11. Josh Tomlin has been released per Robert Murray.
  12. Brewers announce they’ve signed outfielder Michael O’Neill and RHP Aaron Kurcz to minor league deals.
  13. So Martín Maldonado accepted a one year, $2.5 million deal after reportedly turning down $12 million (two years) earlier this off-season. The more exciting part of this story is Maldonado’s agents old (Scott Boras) and new (Dan Lozano) are feuding. Per Ken Rosenthal: Scott Boras: “The Kansas City deal was in place and finalized without us knowing Maldonado had switched agents.” Boras will collect commission on Maldonado’s deal. Dan Lozano (MVP Sports Group) responds: “If a deal was agreed to a few days ago, how come the player never gave his approval? There are some agents that care more about the fee than they do the player. I care about the player.”
  14. A lot of fun performances to follow along with today between the split squad games. Home Runs today included Thames, Yelich, Hiura, Grisham. Lots of good pitching outings including Tomlin, Woodruff, Brown, Knebel, and Hader. Miguel Sanchez struck out 3 of the 4 batters he faced over 1.1 IP as well. [sarcasm]Most importantly the Brewers won 5-1 versus Angels and 11-2 versus A’s to move back to .500 for the Spring, and within striking distance of defending their Cactus League championship.[/sarcasm]
  15. Thanks to the more than 30 participants in the NL Central standings predictions for 2019! Here are the crowdsourced BF.net predictions based on the averages of all win total submissions: Brewers - 91 wins (actual avg was 90.8) Cardinals - 89 wins (actual avg was 89.2) Cubs - 87 wins (actual avg was 87.2) Reds - 80 wins Pirates - 76 wins
  16. From yesterday’s Brewers-Rockies game...
  17. This seems like the part that would be a disadvantage for the Brewers... “As part of the deal, the active limit from Sept. 1 to the end of the season would be lowered from 40 to 28 beginning next year, people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.” The Brewers did a masterful job last season of utilizing a 40-man roster deep with MLB ready talent that could help win games in September.
  18. For those who may have missed it in the title, this change would be for next season, 2020.
  19. A sentence from that article... “Another prominent Mexican League prospect who had been caught in limbo, catcher Fernando Villalobos, has been expected to sign with the Brewers. He ranked as Baseball America's No. 34 international prospect for July 2 last year in the current 2018-19 signing period.” If I am reading the article correctly I believe Villalobos is now free to sign with the Brewers. Also, Ben Badler doesn’t believe the Cubs have the remaining International Bonus Pool space to sign RHP Florencio Serrano who they had originally agreed to a $1.2 million deal with before the ban was enacted last summer.
  20. From today’s game per Daren Willman...
  21. One thing that makes this contract seem like forever is the fact that this year marks Ryan Braun’s 13th MLB season.
  22. Thanks, that actually clears up a lot. Stress as a lead cause and acidic food/drinks as a contributor, instead of just a terrible diet, makes more sense.
  23. This Mauricio Dubon story is baffling. It is either an indictment on the state of the Brewers’ team nutritionists and performance nutrition department, or of Dubon himself. Maybe he is overstating it, but in 2019 there is no excuse for a player one step shy of playing in the major leagues to have a diet so poor that the fallout is hospitalization.
  24. I moved to a 20-game package this year, but didn’t see any X-rated options on the rewards sheet they provided me.
  25. Regarding the “tarp over the sign” (pictured below), I’ve assumed that was a placeholder for where they were going to eventually place the American Family Fields of Phoenix logo. It is interesting in looking at all of the other pictures across the facility there are very few uses of any of the Brewers logos anywhere to be seen. I can’t remember seeing a team specific facility unveiled with less use of the team’s logo. Throughout all of the photos of the locker room, weight room, sports medicine areas, training facilities, hallways, team store, etc., there are almost no Brewers logos. I see one in the weight room and one on the wall before they step foot on the field.
