  1. So how much longer do we think Houser can realistically go in this game. Another 15-20 pitches? He’s only gone over 100 pitches once this season (103 versus the Pirates on July 2).
  2. The Brewers hitters had a pretty good day against Scranton, PA native Max Kranick in his last outing (July 28), he went 5.0 IP allowing 10 hits, 6 earned runs, 1 walk, and 3 strike outs. On the flip side, Adrian Houser has been fairly dominant against these Pirates hitters through 96 plate appearances faced: .147 BA / .181 OBP / .231 SLG ____________________________

  4. Cubs only have about 40 million on the books next year for Heyward, Hendriks, Bote & Arrieta's buyout. Their only notable Arby's guys are Contreras & Happ, who will probably come in a little under 20 million combined. Cots has their opening day payroll going from 203 million in 2019 to 148 million this year. Of the 14 Cubs prospects FanGraphs has rated a 45 FV or higher their ETAs are 2021 (3), 2022 (2), 2023 (2), 2024 (3) and 2025 (4), with all of the top 5 and 7 of the top 10 having ETAs between 2023-25. I think the Cubs are in for at least a couple two tree years of lower payrolls than they were running the last five six seasons. I think Michael Baumann summarized it best on the Ringer MLB podcast this week… the Cubs are a real estate development company now.
  5. He’s pretty good. That trade continues to look better and better. Lauer would be a 3 on quite a few teams. Trent Grisham is obviously a good player, but he wasn’t very good offensively the second half of last season’s 60 game schedule, and he hasn’t been very good in the 43 games since he returned from a hamstring injury this season… 2021 (from June 12 to August 1): 43 games / 173 PA / .196 BA / .294 OBP / .345 SLG / .639 OPS
  6. From Will Sammon… In case you're wondering (because I was): Trades can in fact still be made — just for non-major leaguers. Players who were previously on a major league contract this year but outrighted off the 40-man cannot be traded, either. Brewers find a way to trade. Needed RHP with guys out.
  7. From Will Sammon… John Axford is back with the Brewers. He will be in uniform and active tonight. The Brewers acquired him from the Blue Jays for cash, per club. Axford, all-time franchise leader in saves for single season (46 in 2011), will again wear his No. 59 with Pat Murphy switching to 00. Axford, 38, hasn't pitched in majors since 2018. He actually began 2021 as Blue Jays studio analyst. He then pitched for Team Canada in the Olympic qualifier. Then Toronto signed him to a minors deal. He dominated: 0.84 ERA, 1 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 14 K in 10.2 IP. Now back in Milwaukee. From Adam McCalvy… It's an incredible comeback for Axford, 38, who last pitched in the Majors in 2018. He's been a commentator for Blue Jays TV this year but touched 98 mph while throwing for Team Canada in Olympic qualifying and landed a Minor League deal with Toronto. Now, a shot in the Majors.
  8. From the Brewers Twitter account: Franchise single-season saves leader John Axford has been acquired from Toronto in exchange for cash considerations.
  9. Tonight’s starting pitcher for the Pirates, Bryse Wilson, was part of the trade return from the Braves for closer Richard Rodriguez. Wilson was a 4th round draft pick out of high school in 2016 that debuted in the majors at age-20 back in 2018. He was among the collection of highly regarded Braves pitching prospects that hasn’t yet fully put it together. This year he has started 7 games for teh Braves and struggled for the most part. The most pitches he’s thrown in a game so far is 85 in what was his best appearance of the season back on May 22 versus the Pirates (6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 ER). ——————————————————

  11. From Adam McCalvy… The Brewers signed 16 of their 21 Draft picks before today's deadline passed, plus three undrafted players. Here are the players who didn't sign: OF Roc Riggio (11th round) LHP Hunter Hollan (15th) C Will Rogers (17th) LHP Carter Holton (19th) RHP Samuel Mendez (20th)
  12. Good call! The Braves have now alternated wins and losses for 17 straight games. From a probability standpoint that might be more impressive than a 17-game winning streak.
  13. Since the Brewers sweep in Cincinnati the Reds have been basically matching the Brewers win for win. They have literally had the exact same result as the Brewers on the last 10 days both teams have played. I’ll take that for another two months. Yeah, if the Brewers keep winning at a nearly .600 winning percentage then I don’t think they need to spend too much time worrying about the Reds.
  14. I had forgotten about Jason Kubel. A career .777 OPS hitter that had a .342 BA / .410 OBP / .640 SLG / 1.050 OPS against the Brewers.
  15. On the hitting side here is the list of all-time batting leaders versus the Brewers heading into this season (not updated with this season’s stats)…
  16. Which sort of neutralizes how effective he can be with throwing his best pitch.
  17. Yeah, I won’t mind when they don’t have to face him anymore. For as poor of an overall season as he’s had, he certainly seems to have the Brewers number.
  18. Trevor Story scratched himself from Friday night’s game because he was so upset and confused by the Rockies not trading him. Below are some quotes from this article in the The Athletic by Nick Groke titled, Trevor Story left confused by the Rockies’ trade deadline outcome: ‘I was expecting something’: “I was really confused. I didn’t have great things to say about the situation,” Story said. “Guys like me in a situation I’m in, I was expecting something. … It was very nerve-racking and time-consuming.” ……… Story will now play out the final two months of his contract in Colorado, then almost certainly leave for a better situation. When asked whether he would entertain an offer from the Rockies for a long-term contract, he said: “I think the writing is on the wall.”
