I think its time Melvin steps in and has a little talk with Macha; he needs to tell Macha in no uncertain terms that Mat will play every day. If Melvin doesnt feel this way he should just send Mat down to AAA where he can continue to develop offensively and especially defensively. Pinch hitting is a waste of time for both Mat and the team.
They are stunting Gamel's development by sitting him on the bench. The only way his defense will improve is by playing and its clear by now that Macha doesnt want to play him. Having Gamel on the team in a pinch hitting role is incredibly shortsighted and I really would expect better from Melvin.
It has become obvious at this point that Mat Gamel is not going to be given a fair chance to play every day. Against RHP McGehee is playing third and Counsell is playing second. Against LHP Hall plays third and McGehee switches to second. With McGehee so hot I can understand him playing every day but Gamel should be playing instead of Counsell. Why exactly are we wasting Gamel's service time for him to be a part time player? This is no way to handle a great young player. He either needs to be playing every day here or if not let him develop in AAA. Using him part time and as a pinch hitter is a waste in my opinion. I blame Melvin for this. I dont think Macha likes Gamel and it is Melvin's job as the GM to force Macha to play him or send him down to AAA. Doug cant possibly think its good for Mat's development to sit on the bench. I am sorry for the rant but this situation is bothering me more each day.
So we are basically wasting Gamel's service time for him to be a part time player? This makes no sense to me whatsoever. Either play him every day or send him back to AAA to play every day. This is no way to handle a top young player.
I realize that they didnt have Ibanez last year but I was talking about this year. At any rate they had a dominant offense with Burrell and this year with Ibanez. We dont have nearly the lineup they do and that is why the Suppans and Loopers of the world are not good enough. We desperately needed Parra to pitch well and when that didnt happen we were in big trouble. We are lucky that the division and league are awful or we would be talking about who we would be selling off.
The Brewers dont have nearly the offense that the Phillies have. They have Utley, Howard, Ibanez, Werth, Victorino and Rollins who is having a lousy year. Our lineup is not even remotely close to as good as that lineup.
Philadelphia can get away with suspect pitching because they have a dominant offense. Our offense is above average but not nearly good enough to overcome our lousy starters other than Gallardo. I will be shocked if this team makes the playoffs with Gallardo and 4 number 5 starters.
Is there any way that Atlanta would trade Vazquez for Hart. Vazquez is exactly what we need; he is a legit 1/2 that pitches tons of innings and has been durable his whole career. They desperately need more offense and have been linked to hart in the past.
crewcrazy, do you honestly think this starting pitching is good enough to lead us to the playoffs? We should have traded for Vazquez last offseason. He is a legit 1/2 who pitches over 200 innings each year and he wouldnt have cost us Gamel or Escobar. The biggest problem with our starting staff is that they all have average to below average stuff other than Gallardo and Parra when he is right. Melvin should know better than to count on Suppan and Looper to lead us to the playoffs.
This is a nice trade for the cards but we really didnt need DeRosa. We are in desperate need of a starting pitcher and if we dont get one we are not making the playoffs. Burns and McClung do not belong in any contenders rotations.
Fantastic game. Nice to see Corey and JJ come through in the clutch and what can you say about Prince; the guy is just a fantastic hitter. great win!!!!!!!!!
Can this team ever get on a roll. Im tired of losing so many winnable games. With this pitching staff we are gonna need to score a lot more runs. Cant keep relying on Braun, Fielder and now McGehee to do all the hitting. Somebody needs to step up and step up soon.
So Macha lets Coffey hit and then takes him out after one batter in the eighth. This guy is getting dumber by the day. This is straight out of the Ned Yost school of managing.
