  1. Luis Pena has a power arm and I hate just throwing his potential away for no reason. With guys like Rottino and Gwynn taking space on the 40 man roster this move makes no sense.
  2. There is no doubt in my mind the Gallardo has what it takes to be a legitimate number 1 starter. The only issues I see with him are how many innings he will be able to pitch after missing most of next season. Parra can really go either way. If he can cut down his walks he has the stuff to be a solid 2/3. If the wildness continues he will have difficulties reaching that level. Bush is a slightly above average starter and Suppan/Looper are definite number 5s who will hopefully eat up innings but in Suppans case I fear that he will be terrible. Overall our rotation clearly has questions but can definitely be solid enough to keep us in contention.
  3. I completely agree about McClung. He will never have the control to be any better than replacement level. I definitely agree that if he doesnt have a good spring he may not make the team.
  4. This deal would add depth but Looper is far from special. If it means McClung is not in the rotation to start the season I consider it a good move but I was really hoping we would make a trade and acquire a top of the rotation starter not just another 4/5. Hopefully its for one yr and not a ton of money and it will be a decent if unspectacular signing.
  5. Melvin has got to get something done. This rotation as currently put together will destroy any chance this team has of making the playoffs. We have two potential replacement level starters in Suppan and McClung penciled into the rotation and we are counting on two young guys who have never thrown anywhere near 200 innings in a season to anchor the staff. I can be called out every day for being too negative but Doug Melvin has been completely negligent in his handling of the pitching staff this offseason. With this rotation and complete lack of depth we are going to have a completely overworked bullpen as well. Does anyone seriously believe that McClung will ever have good enough control to pitch more than 5 innings on a consistent basis. I understand why we wouldnt overpay for a Lowe or Burnett but Melvin really has done a poor job augmenting our rotation. Even a guy like Odalis Perez could have been had on a one year deal for a million or so but of course he signs a minor league deal with the nationals. If Chase Wright is the only starting pitcher we add this offseason I would have to call the offseason a complete failure. Clearly I was impatient at the beginning of the offseason but we are weaks away from spring training and we still have not added a viable starting pitcher.
  6. I have no problem with this trade since we are very desperate for any depth whatsoever but I really hope we can acquire a more solid arm before the season starts. If that means trading Corey Hart who should have some value so be it. We can always pick up a corner OF on a one year deal if we trade Corey. I am very concerned that this rotation as currently constituted will not pitch nearly enough innings and our bullpen will be toast be the all star break.
  7. I was being sarcastic. Nothing more to say at this point; if we are that strapped for cash we should have used the money we gave Hoffman to sign a decent starter. This rotation is not nearly good enough to compete for a playoff spot with. There is going to be way too much pressure on Gallardo and Parra to stay healthy and pitch well. Melvin really needs to do better than this to improve our starting pitching. I am sure we could trade Hart and get a decent pitcher in return. At this point if we have one or two starters get injured we will really be scouring the scrap heap for innings and that could get very ugly.
  8. Im very sorry to hear that about Ben. Maybe Ben would be in better shape if Yost hadnt abused him for so long.
  9. Either Sheets medical reports are very negative or something crazy is going on here; when has there ever been a pitcher of this caliber unsigned in February with virtually no teams interested. If I didnt know better I would think Sheets is a lousy pitcher. I actually feel bad for Ben at this point. Obviously it was a mistake turning down arbitration but at the time nobody could have predicted that he would be in this position. I am still hoping for a miracle return to the Brewers but if not I hope he surfaces in Texas so I can at least root for him to do well.
  10. So its February 2 and we still havent added a starting pitcher. At this point I am very very disappointed in this offseason. To think that Melvin went into the offseason expecting to lose Sabathia and having no interest in resigning Sheets at any price and having no plans whatsoever to replace either of them is mindboggling. Does Melvin actually believe that we can win with this lousy rotation as is with no depth whatsoever and two completely unreliable starters in Suppan and 5 inning McClung? I am in shock that Doug seems to have no urgency whatsoever when it comes to improving this rotation. I really hope I am wrong and Doug will make a late move to acquire a starter but if not he has been completely negligent in his handling of this pitching staff.
  11. We are very very lucky to have Braun on our team but that was one ugly sweater he was wearing.
  12. I wouldnt mind taking a shot at Rich Hill but there is no way the cubs are trading him to the Brewers.
  13. Villy is a good pitcher but seems to have more success as a reliever. At this point I would be willing to give him another shot in the rotation because McClung will never be more than a 5 inning guy that will kill our bullpen.
  14. What I dont understand is that we were willing to give CC 20 mil per year but arent willing to give half or a third of that for another starter. Is it really possible that Melvin went into this offseason knowing he would lose CC and Sheets and have no plans to replace either? I really have a hard time believing that we are going into the season with this current rotation. No doubt in my mind that we will kill the bullpen by the all star break with all the short starts we are gonna get from the likes of Suppan and espcially McClung who I am willing to bet never pitches 7 innings in a game. Obviously we have no interest in Sheets or any other viable starting pitchers. I am shocked and very disappointed in Melvin and the owner for thinking we should go into the season with this awful rotation.
  15. Garland is a younger Suppan. Unless he is signing for 2 mil or less I would pass.
  16. Sheets was abused many time by Yost as was Sabathia. I also feel like Sheets was never fully appreciated by the avg fan who would look at his W/L record or think he is always injured when its not true. Ben Sheets has been a great Brewer who wont be fully appreciated by most Brewers fans until he is gone.
  17. Supposedly the Yankees are close to resigning Pettite so it looks like we wont be getting a 4th round draft pick for Sheets.
  18. Very smart signing. This guy is a great pitcher.
  19. If money is such a problem we shouldnt have signed Hoffman and used that money to put towards Sheets. For all the good that Melvin has done it is shocking to me how he is neglecting the most important part of the team, the starting rotation. If he is counting on Suppan and McClung to comprise 2/5s of our rotation he is being completely negligent. Playoff type teams dont have two potential replacement level starters in their rotation without injuries occuring.
  20. Suppan and McClung are both potentially replacement level or worse. If Melvin is counting on McClung as a viable option for our rotation he is nuts.
  21. I actually have an ameritrade account. I might need to take my money out.
  22. Melvin cant seriously be thinking of going into the season with this rotation can he? There is more than a good chance that Suppan and McClung will be replacement level or worse and to be counting on Yo and Manny as our numbers 1 and 2 is putting way too much pressure on them. If Melvin doesnt find another quality starter (Sheets) I just dont see how we can compete for a playoff spot.
  23. I think Sheets wanted to come back but the Brewers never made a real effort to make him feel wanted. I remember Sheets saying last season that "you cant invite yourself back". That tells me that he was open to returning but that the Brewers didnt want him for some reason. If this is true Melvin and Attanasio need to make amends for making Ben feel unwanted and make him a reasonable offer.
  24. Melvin really needs to make amends and make Ben feel wanted. If he can do that we can have an ace at a Suppan salary. Think about that; we might be able to sign Sheets for less than Suppan will make the next two years. Please please please Doug Melvin make it happen.
