  1. Ill tell you this, if McClung was a free agent I bet he couldnt get a 1 yr contract for 1.66 million.
  2. I just read on mlbtraderumors.com that Sheets supposedly wants a 2 yr deal for 18 mil plus an option year. If thats true we would have to be insane to not give him that and more.
  3. Hardy has said on more than one occassion how much he wants to be a Brewer. Throw in how quickly he just signed the one year deal and I could definitely see him being willing to sign a below market deal to stay a Brewer. Not every player is out there chasing every last dollar and JJ comes off as one of those guys that is willing to be fair in his contract demands. I could be wrong but I think if the Brewers guaranteed that JJ would not be moved off the SS position he would be more than willing to stay. If this is the case and maybe Im reading things wrong we can trade Escobar as part of a package to get a top of the rotation starter which is something we desperately need if we are going to contend this season. My preference would be to resign Sheets but if he is not willing to come back I would be more than happy to resign Hardy and trade Escobar for pitching.
  4. If we can sign Hardy long term which I think is a good idea we can trade Escobar in a package for Peavy. Maybe Escobar, Salome, and an A ball arm could get the deal done. I think having Hoffman around might be incentive for Peavy to be willing to play in Milwaukee.
  5. I definitely agree that a big part of the problem is that we havent developed enough starting pitching. I just think that it is foolish to think we can contend witrh this current rotation and adding an expensive bottom of the rotation starter is not going to fix that. If we can trade Fielder for some pitching and sign a guy like Dunn to play first we will be fine. I would just hate to overpay Looper because all he really adds is depth.
  6. If they cant bring back Sheets they need to make a trade for a top of the line starter like Peavy. To go into next season with Gallardo and Parra as 1/2 is just not wise. I think Gallardo is a legitimate ace but after last seasons injury we cant expect him to throw 200 innings. Parra needs to lower his walks if he is to reach his potential but we really shouldnt expect him to be a legit number two starter. Bush has a chance to be a solid 3/4 but Suppan is nothing special and McClung is incapable of pitching more than 5 innings on a consistent basis. I just dont see how this team makes the playoffs with this current rotation and overpaying the likes of Looper or Garland is nothing more than depth instead of what we truly need which is a top of the rotation guy. That is why I think Melvin should try his best to make amends with Sheets or look at the trade market instead of signing a journeyman 5th starter type.
  7. Melvin really needs to make more of a concerted effort to resign Sheets. We really need a top of the rotation type of starter and Sheets is it. If we dont resign him we need to make a trade instead of signing a 4th or 5th starter type like Looper or Garland who wont make us contenders. To count on Gallardo and Parra as our numbers 1/2 is very dangerous and not the way to go if we plan on contending again this year. I really question how Melvin is putting together this staff at this point. Our rotation is full of question marks and the bullpen is gonna have to pitch a ton of innings if we have McClung and Suppan in the rotation. Also if Parra doesnt improve his control he will have many 5 inning starts as well. Overall Melvin really needs to improve this staff and not with another back of the rotation guy.
  8. Good for Attanassio. This sport needs a salary cap. As for those who think its bad for football should realize the Packers would be much less competitive without one. The NFL is the best league because each and every team has the same chance of winning every year. That is not so in baseball.
  9. This is the guy to get signed long term. hardy is one of the best shortstops in baseball, is a great guy from all accounts, is a team leader, and most of all wants to be in Milwaukee. I also get the idea that he would be reasonable in his contract demands unlike a guy like Fielder. We really need to make Hardy the face of the Brewers along with Braun.
  10. The fact that Swisher was that bad last season especially in the second half and the fact our team defense would be far worse with Hart replacing cameron in center makes me say no to this deal. I also dont like the fact that Swisher has three years left on his deal at good money and if he doesnt produce he becomes a Suppan like albatross. The risks are just too great to make this deal.
  11. Sheets was very bothered that he couldnt pitch in the playoffs. He was also very emotional about the possibility of not being back. He has been a great Brewer and I really hope he comes back.
  12. This is a very solid deal. If Doug can just resign Sheets this offseason will be a successful one.
  13. Melvin really needs to do better in regards to Hoffman. Offering 1 yr plus an option at 4 mil per is way too low to get the deal done. I dont see why we cant offer 2 guaranted years for 10 mil. That wont exactly break the bank. This offseason is really turning into a nightmare. If we can just sign Hoffman and Sheets we will be fine but if we miss out on both we will be taking a huge step backwards.
  14. Please explain to me how anyone can think this bullpen is in good shape when Villy is the only guy you can reasonably count on and even he is far from a sure thing. I dont think we can count on Coffee, Riske, or Julio. I like Stetter as the lefty in the pen but I just dont see any pitchers in this bullpen that are all that great. Granted our bullpen was nothing special last season but losing Torres is not a good thing and Julio is really another Mota. Add in the fact that we dont exactly have a solid rotation at the moment and this pitching staff is in shambles. As of now this pitching staff is not even close to good enough to make the playoffs with. If Melvin can just resign Sheets and sign Hoffman I would feel a lot better but if he is going to only add a Looper type we are in big trouble.
  15. Fuentes wanted to be in california so I dont think we had a real shot so I wont blame Melvin. We need to try to sign Hoffman. This bullpen as currently constitued is garbage and we really need to improve it. Villy is the only guy I have confidence in; this is a real big problem area for the team. In my mind the Angels got an absolute steal with Fuentes.
  16. As a Jets fan I can tell you first hand that the reason New England and the Giants dominate football is because they are well run organizations. They have the same salary structure as the rest of the league and do well most years because they draft well and have great coaching staffs. I love the fact that there is a cap in the NFl and that teams like the Packers and Buccaneers have just as good a chance as my lowly Jets of succeeding every year.
  17. The rotation as currently constituted is scary bad and clearly not good enough to contend with. The only starter I am confident about is Gallardo who has the potential to be a number 1. Parra could go in any number of directions. He has the stuff to be a solid number two but his high walk rate and inconsistency will probably limit his upside to that of a solid number 3 for 2009. Bush is basically a solid number 4 who gives you innings but is maddingly inconsistent. Suppan at this point is really a number 6 but with his contract he is entrenched in the rotation. As for McClung he has great stuff but is way too wild to pitch enough innings as a starter so he is essentially a number 6 as well. Melvin really needs to get himself a top of the rotation starter cough Sheets cough so we can contend next season or sign a couple of guys to minor league deals like Mulder and garcia and hope for the best. If all Melvin can do is add Looper at a cost of 5 mil or more over 2 or 3 years he should just pass since Looper is not good enough to allow us to contend.
  18. The more I think of it the more I hate this potential deal. As others have said Looper doesnt make the Brewers contenders; all he does is add a bottom of the rotation arm. Between Suppan,Bush, and Parra we have enough question marks as it is with Parra the only one of the three having the potential to really step up. In my mind the Brewers have two choices; either sign a top of the rotation starter cough Sheets cough or sign guys like Mulder or garcia to minor league deals and hope for the best. To pay Looper 5 mil plus per year over 2 or 3 years is a waste of money and doesnt really make the team any better. He is basically a slightly better Suppan and with our defense and his age that is a disaster waiting to happen.
  19. Joe Hova sums it up very nicely for me. I hate paying for mediocrity and Looper is mediocre. We should either pay for a very good/great pitcher or sign a few more scrap heap guys to minor league deals. This team doesnt need a 4/5 starter; we have plenty of those. We need a guy a top the rotation to take the pressure off Gallardo. Unless we get that we will have a very tough time competing for the playoffs. We also need to improve the bullpen. Other than Villy I dont fully trust any of these guys to get the job done consistently and with our rotation looking far weaker than a year ago our bullpen will be that much more important.
  20. Unless we are getting him for 5 mil or less I dont like this signing at all. As others have pointed out we need a 1/2 starter and not a 4/5. Looper is fine for those roles but the Brewers currently have too many similar pitchers and really need a potential ace atop the rotation along with Gallardo. It has also been pointed out that a groundball pitcher with this defense is not a good thing either. If the Brewers are going to contend next season they need a top flight starter to go along with Yo. Looper would just be another stop gap type of guy and not really strengthen our rotation enough to win. Looper would be a signing for depth only since he isnt a high quality pitcher and at the likely cost that it will take to acquire him I would pass.
  21. I dont so much mind this signing as I mind what it means. I am really hoping to add an impact pitcher and Looper is far from that. I think he is slightly worse than Bush and better than Suppan. He is a 4/5 starter type which is fine when your goal is depth but I really think we need an ace atop the rotation with Gallardo. If Looper is the best pitcher we acquire this offseason then I just dont see us being viable contenders next season. As far as what I would pay I would say no more than 10 mil over 2 years. Anything more than that and I will be upset. I would hate to go into next season with only one starting pitcher (Gallardo) that I fully trust in the rotation and a bunch of 4s and 5s behind him.
  22. I would really hope we would sign someone better than him. I wouldnt mind him as a 4th or 5th starter but we really need to do better than that. To count on Gallardo and Parra as our top two starters is really unwise. I really hope that Melvin doesnt plan on going this route to replace Sabathia and Sheets. Looper is no better than Dave Bush so we really should be aiming higher.
  23. On mlbtraderumors.com it says the Brewers are close to signing Braden Looper. I really hope this doesnt happen because there are far better options out there.
  24. If this doesnt prove what a shill Gammons is for the yankees I dont know what will.
  25. Im very concerned about this rotation. I love Gallardo but I hate the pressure he will be under as potentially the ace of the staff. I also like Parra but unless he becomes more consistent he is not a number two starter. Bush is Bush meaning he can be great and he can be terrible but overall ends up being servicable. I dont trust Suppan whatsoever and expect him to have a terrible season. McClung is way too wild to be ciunted on to ever be more than a 5 inning pitcher. In my mind this rotation as currently constituted is average at best and below avergae more than likely. If we can somehow convince Ben to come back I would feel a lot more comfortable but as of now this rotation scares the heck out of me.
