  1. Not to be unpatriotic but it appears to me this is more a goodwill measure than a national pride event at this point. I'd rather the US picked someone else and let Israel have Braun. Even if it meant lower odds of the US winning. This is a scrimmage for us but the big show for some of these teams. Many of these players are, in a way, pioneers of baseball in their countries. If one of our players get hurt I'll be disappointed but still think it's worth it as a fan of baseball. For the most part I don't believe exhibitions count but the WBC is an exception for me.
  2. Wasn't he one of the three stud prospects for Toronto back in the day along with Carpenter? For the life of me I can't think of the third. Can someone help? I remember hoping we could swing a trade of Vina' for one of them back then.
  3. 2 yrs at $10 mil? He was non-tendered after making $3 mil last year. I was assuming closer to $5-6 mil. They non tendered him because he was going to make more next season than they wanted to pay. That not the same as Washington thinking he wasn't worth what he made last season. I find it hard to believe he would not get at least a small raise as a free agent lefty who can both start or relieve. Maybe not as much as he would have got in arbitration but more than the $3 million he made last season. I'd guess around $8 million or so.
  4. In an ideal world I'd agree. We are not and this is what we have. All I'm saying is there have been teams with great offenses and sufficient pitching that have won in the past. Conversely teams with mediocre offenses and great pitching are not locks to win either. I really didn't think guys like Dempster would have changed that anyway so maybe I was already looking at it that way to start with.
  5. Gonna go with the young Rotation I guess... Good luck with that cuz were not the A's! No we are not. We have a lineup full of veterans aside from one young starter at short. One of the games premier players among them. The pitching is young but there are a lot of options and they all have good arms. They are not going to be world beaters but when you have the league's top offense all coming back you don't need great pitching. Good will do. I think we have the talent to be good. Whether it turns out that way is yet to be seen.
  6. Even if you pick the wrong ones to start with that isn't a major problem. The advantage of so many viable candidates with options left is they are interchangeable. Even if they pick the wrong one to start with that is easily remedied.
  7. It saddens me to think of how many snowmen are hunted and killed each year for their noses. Do we really need carrots that badly? Couldn't we at least stop eating baby carrots?
  8. Baseball doesn't need a cap provided they allow any team to move anywhere they want. AS it stands teams can't move to the biggest markets because the current teams there won't allow anyone to move there. I'd have to think the Yankee's income would go down if Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan all had their own team. Same with LA. Since all teams are not free to move to the best markets it is hardly a fair system. Thus the need to adjust the system itself.
  9. Nobody talks about it, but the disparity in payrolls cheapens championships for teams that are able to buy their way into contention. While that is spot on to be fair I also think it enhances the joy fans of small market teams feel when they do win. I couldn't fathom following a big market team because it wouldn't mean much to win. If I was a fan of a big market team I would feel relief that we won a World Series not happiness. That just isn't worth investing my time or energy.
  10. I love it when a word is showing TH_ and they buy the E. At that point, you know the last word, so why not buy another one. Because you know there is at least one E. You will not lose your turn and you may find more E's in other words that make those words more decipherable.
  11. It is best to be an optimist. Until they start moving animals in pairs to Cape Kennedy.
  12. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/390159_10152235615940023_1509937958_n.jpg Is it just me or does that blue blanket combined with the cupboard handles in the background look like the cookie monster?
  13. Sometimes teams dump salary when they are about to sell the team. The Marlin fans can only hope this is one of them.
  14. I just did a Google search to make sure that Geritol still exists. (It does.) I don't think I've seen a Geritol commercial in decades. I think you may have given away your advanced years as well. Still younger than me but obviously on this site that isn't saying much.
  15. I think this is officially my first ever "I Feel Old" moment because I loved that show growing up. It ran from 93-2000, you loved that show growing up and just felt old for the first time? Ouch that hurts. Screw it I'm gonna slam some Geritol and go to bed. After the early bird special at Denny's of course.
  16. One more minor league suspension. He is safe from those as long as he is in the majors I believe. Not to mention testing positive for pot isn't a suspendable offense for players on the 40 man roster. Which was most likely why the Brewers put him on it before they needed to.
  17. We just got our breed test back on our latest dog. Turns out to be 1/2 border collie, 1/4 Lhasa Apso and 1/4 Great Pyrenees. While that is unusual enough it appears they know one parent was pure border and the other was the Lhasa Apso and Pyrenees mix. A Lhasa is 10 to 11 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 12 to 18 pounds. The Pyrenees is 25 to 32 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 110–120 pounds...I'm still trying to figure out the logistics on how that is possible.
  18. Dude medicate or something.
  19. When determining playoff structure, it's a balancing act between entertainment and giving the best teams the best chance to prove it. Having the World Series determined by one game would be really exciting but... What is supposed to be proven that wasn't in a 162 games schedule? We already know who the best teams are. There is nothing a seven game series outcome can provide to show those 162 games didn't get it right except being able to win specific games in specific circumstances. Be it a one game do or die or a five or seven game series the test of the playoffs is different than the regular season in that respect. It takes all the teams with an argument that they are the best, weights it for the ones who have the best argument as dictated by the regular season, then puts them all through a specific set of tests. The new format creates an extra circumstance that the lesser of the playoff teams have to prove themselves in. Which given their failure to succeed in the regular season to accomplish their goal seems fair.
  20. I wouldn't mind a 3,5,7 format but I don't know how much further into fall we can get without having the weather becoming a real problem. As it is the last game is November 1st this season.
  21. The offense alone makes me feel optimistic for next season. Not only was it productive but it was diverse. It can win in so many different ways. Lead the league in steals and homeruns, second in sac bunts. It's great to have an offense than can do one thing very well. To have on that does everything well should be illegal.
  22. He made a good amount of money, represented the team and city well, didn't complain, made his way back from injury and now gets to spend his time with his family. Congrats to him on a good career and I hope he has a lot of happiness and satisfaction going forward. I was going to post my own thoughts on his career but when I read this I couldn't think of a better way to sum up my feelings. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting JimH5.
  23. My grandma is 94 and lives alone. She can hardly walk the length of her driveway. All her kids worry about her but also worry that making her move would possibly kill her as well. She is terribly afraid of nursing homes. The stress of being put in one might be enough at her age. So they take turns going over there and spending the say with her. Getting old isn't for the timid.
  24. Did you ever meet someone that made you wonder if they are a really smart dummy or a really dumb genius? Like how Yogi Berra could say something so stupid yet make sense and you don't know if they are that dumb or that smart.
