At the very least, Urias appears ready to hit MLB LHP right now. At the very least he’ll start Vs LHP’s and most likely he’ll be our every day starting SS very soon (with 6 years of control)
At the age of 22, last year in MLB with the Padres, Urias hit .355 with a .509 SLG (.892 OPS) vs LHP. Now granted that is a very small sample (57 AB’s) and he struggled mightily vs RHP, but to me it gives insight that his bat might be a little more MLB ready than is being reported...
I haven’t been this excited about a Brewers transaction since the Yelich trade. I understand that Urias was blocked by Tatis, but to get him for Davies & Grisham and also receive a LHP who is controllable until 2025 is something I just would not believe prior to reading it in print. I can barely believe it right now....
I like the thinking that if giving up Hader you’d need more than Mejia coming back... so getting Merrifield back makes sense. As others have said, it isn’t enough going to KC though...
Just because they chould doesn't mean they should. The Brewers are lucky to have so many fans who are concerned about them getting a good deal on their player contracts. We don't do that with anything else in our lives. We don't concern ourselves that the furnace repair company is paying their workers too much. Or the barista at the coffee shop. But somehow, despite never opening their books, in a league without a salary cap, and for a franchise that has grown in value by $1Billion since he bought the team, lots of good and loyal fans fret and stew that Mark A not spend too much on the players he wants us to root for. I am more interested in the Brewers winning games than I am in whether or not they do so at a bargain. I very strongly agree. I spent much of last winter saying & posting similar things. It is an extremely frustrating aspect of being a Brewers fan, however I’ve resigned myself that it isn’t going to change. And I still am a Brewers fan. “It is what it is.” If I can accept that the Brewers have a limited payroll, my hopes are that they will prioritize spending what little “extra” they have on pitching...
It is hard to imagine spending big money on a Catcher that could be spent on pitching. Look at who was playing Catcher in the World Series! Manny Piña is plenty good enough, this team needs much better pitching
Bernie is a fun part of the Miller Park experience, especially for kids and casual fans. Bernie is, somewhat, a representative of the Brewers’ small city reality. He is also a representative of the irreverence that is part of Wisconsin culture. There have been many times that I’ve thought that the Brewers ownership is more concerned with the Miller Park experience than with winning a World Series. In the last few weeks, I’ve wondered a lot about what it must be like to root for a team where you know there’s a very good chance that they are going to sign somebody like Cole or Strasburg or Rendon, where you know that high dollars will be spent on improving the roster, where there is a tradition of winning World Championships. Such is the reality of being a Brewers fan. That reality doesn’t take away from my enjoyment of Miller Park or Bernie Brewer. And it’ll make it all that much sweeter if the Brewers ever do win it all.
Counterpoint, as long as we are talking hypotheticals - Dealing Lux or Seager isn't going to cost that team future division titles. They are stacked offensively with young talent. But those 8 playoff innings from Josh Hader may very well be the difference between a World Series title, and blowing the NLCS. But perhaps they are completely happy cakewalking to an NL West title every year, and that's it? That is exactly the point. And Stearns isn’t going to just give away Hader for lesser prospects. Maybe L.A. signs Aroldis Chapman... but they usually don’t spend big money on free agents and they need serious help in their bullpen...
Especially considering we would be unable to resign him after those 2 years. Yep. It'd be different if we had a budget similar to Washington, let alone the Red Sox. The Brewers just can't afford to do stuff like that. If we had a home grown pitching staff like the Dodgers and needed Lindor as the final piece of the puzzle for a 2 year window, that'd be different too But we...just...don't
Have to think that they'll be going with Braun at first, and are thinking about Shaw playing there too if his bat comes back around. Outfield of Yelich/Cain and either Grisham or Ray.
Letting go of Anderson & Thames is freeing up some money, that's a good thing if then spent wisely. Braun is only around for one more year, right? It is hard to imagine they'd pay $15 million for a 37 year old Braun in 2021 when he had 1.8 WAR in 2019.
Generally speaking, in my opinion, if your best hitter is also an above average runner, like Trout, Yelich, Bregman, I'd bat them 2nd. If your best hitter is a below average runner, such as Nolan Arenado or Paul Goldschmidt, I'd bat them 3rd
Strongly agree. Well said. I think Seager is a little overrated, but he is certainly more valuable than Arcia, and I'm a big Arcia fan. I would prefer to "roll the dice" a little in getting more years with Lux, but Seager would be a nice addition.
It's hard to imagine them signing Grandal unless they somehow get rid of Cain's contract... If they do sign Grandal w/o greatly increasing the budget there won't be much improvement with the pitching staff other than hoping the pitchers already on the roster greatly improve Tough spot to be in. All of these decisions would be easier if they could increase the payroll budget during Yelich's prime window...
