  1. It depends on the medicals re Dozier, to a degree, but even then I like Moustakas more.
  2. Johnson wasn't the Oakland pitching coach in 2015 when Gray finished 3rd in the CY voting was he? Did the Yankees employ one pitching coach on the road and one at home resulting in huge home/road splits? Gray's a veteran major league pitcher who can figure out things on his own without a pitching coach making a huge difference. Gray still had residual Johnson pixie dust from his Vandy days in 2015.
  3. Fairly easy to project that Christian Yelich will not hit like steroid era Bonds in September of 2019. Difficult to project whether other players will pick up the slack, whether Jimmy Nelson will be productive, how valuable Burnes & Hiura & Dubon will be, and whether our relief aces will regress or not.
  4. Chicken & an Egg. I maintain that a World Series win would bringing in unprecedented revenue in TV contracts, sponsorships, merch sales, ticket sales. Wisconsin goes crazy over a winner. I think investing more in payroll will pay off tenfold.
  5. So... no Machado in Pinstripes? (Not sure if I should put that in Blue, or not)
  6. DiPoto needed a signing like this, for the fan base & PR, considering the rebuild he is undertaking.
  7. Maybe they should move Yelich to Shortstop.
  8. This is one of those under the radar moves with some real upside. Spangenberg is not without some pedigree. He was a 10th overall pick, and a consensus top 100 prospect at one time. In Miller Park, his bat may play. I agree. Spangenberg hit .289/.355/.457 vs RHP in 2017 & .261/.332/.393 vs RHP in 2018. He struggles mightily vs LHP Hernan Perez hit .239/.282/.330 vs RHP in 2018 & .241/.272/.405 vs RHP in 2017. It is entirely possible that Spangenberg is merely AAAA depth, and depending on what other moves are made that may be true. But I think, similar to bringing in Ben Gamel, the Brewers are looking at Spangenberg as a way to improve production vs RHP. Perez had 209 plate appearances vs RHP in 2018, and, considering the .282 OBP, I'm guessing Stearns & Co consider that way too many at bats given away. Perez can hit LHP, he has value. Spangenberg is a much better option vs RHP ...
  9. Thanks Eye Black, I stand corrected!
  10. Gray had a 3.17 ERA away from Yankee Stadium last year. That was bolstered a good bit by 3 appearances against the lowly Orioles in Camden Yards, in which he went 3-0 with a 0.49 ERA/0.66 WHIP. He also padded those stats with 8 innings giving up 1 run at Kansas City. He got hit hard at Fenway (although many pitchers did in 2018). 5 innings, 6 earned runs. He did put in a solid performance at Houston: 6 Innings, 4 hits, 2 walks, 2 earned runs... and at Washington he threw 5 innings, gave up 2 earned runs, struck out 7 The Rays hit him hard: a 5.19 ERA in 2 appearances at Tampa Bay. He's worth taking a chance on. I agree with others that I wouldn't give up too much for him. Thames for Gray makes plenty of sense.
  11. And Travis Shaw plus Dubon, who we got for a broken down relief pitcher. (Think the Red Sox weren't aware of Thornburg's medicals & didn't understand the risks involved in the trade?)
  12. I predict Hiura will win a couple of batting titles. His ceiling is a Hall of Fame induction. His floor is a .265 batting average guy with 10-15 HR's & lots of clutch hits over his MLB career.
  13. It's great to have him, as long as the Brewers no longer let him face LHP's
  14. Exactly. And I've said it over & over about Scooter: if you want the Scooter of the last 2 years you'd also need the Reds' hitting coach. It is well documented that he helped significantly in changing Scooter's swing.
  15. Brewers still mentioned as a possible trade partner with Cleveland for Kluber, per Morosi
  16. Keuchel would be the guy. Not sure if the Brewers want to pay for him though...
  17. No reason at all to lock them up long term. Shaw can't hit lefties and his defense will get worse as he ages. Stearns will continually churn the roster as players get older & not get stuck with bad contract that hurt...
  18. Who is playing in the OF vs lefties? Braun, Yelich, Cain. Perez when Braun is hurt.
  19. The Nationals, with Scherzer, Strasburg, & Corbin are going to lose 90 games?
  20. If everybody is healthy to start out the year, I think he'll be in AAA. The odds of everybody being healthy to start the year aren't super high. Also, this is assuming Thames is still around. If he gets moved, Gamel will make the roster--unless another LH bat is picked up along the way. Thames hit .223 with a .313 OBP vs RHP last year with a lot of strikeouts, and defense & baserunning that are significantly worse than Gamel's. He'll also be 32 years old in 2019. I suppose it is possible that they value Thames more than Gamel as a corner outfielder because of his power, but that would really surprise me.
  21. Pure guesswork but I suspect they plan on playing Braun in only 100-110 games this year. He's always been injury prone and as he ages they will need to monitor his playing time to keep him as close to 100% as possible. Braun had a .859 OPS vs LHP last year, .745 vs RHP. No doubt that Stearns & Co have vastly more expansive data that shows that Braun should sit more vs RHP. I don't think Gamel is being brought in to be AAAA depth, he is being brought in to start in about 50% of the games or so...again Gamel hit .283 with a .369 OBP vs RHP last season. Braun hit .258 with a .302 OBP vs RHP last year
  22. Certainly a valid point of view. The Cubs have a LH dominant pitching staff, too. I get it. Still, MLB is something like 70% RH Starting Pitchers, and Stearns specifically mentioned wanting to get another LH bat. Now, maybe he is just saying that and the main reasons he wanted Gamel is because of being able to option him and the lower cost/more control. adambr, I always enjoy your point of view. You are right, we need more RH bats, too... In general we would benefit from more offense all around if we are going to take that next step. I think this is a small step in that direction. As much as I liked Domingo he really was a bit of a liability defensively, too
  23. We don't have a ton of LH bats. Yelich, Shaw, Thames and previous to Gamel, who else? Hiura is a RH hitter. This move gives the lineup more balance. You don't want to sit Braun vs LHP's, but on the multiple days that he does need to be out, Gamel is probably a better choice over Santana vs RHP's. Thames really isn't an outfielder. Braun isn't durable. I do like Santana a lot, loved his clutch hitting in the postseason, but I can understand the trade. Btw: is that accurate, that we have control of Gamel for 4 seasons?
  24. Hamel hit .283 with a .369 OBP vs RHP in 2018. There is value there
