  1. The clearest upgrade within our budget (if we have any budget left at all) would be a 2B/utility guy like Asdrubal Cabrera. No starting pitcher under $10 million is going to be a clear upgrade over our internal options. Hard pass on Miley for me, as much as I loved watching him last year when we caught lightning in a bottle.
  2. We absurdly hid Wei-Chung Wang on the major league roster for an entire season and then a couple years later let him go for nothing even though his minor league numbers were decent.
  3. I don't think Bobby Wahl is even going to start the season with the MLB club, but I think by the end of the season he's going to be right up there in the elite end-of-game squad with Hader/Knebel/Jeffress.
  4. Good idea re Danny Valencia, Eye Black Here are some more 2B/3B free agent/trade candidates who hit LHP well and could split time with Shaw at 3B or Spangenberg at 2B. (2016-2018 splits) Whit Merrifield, 138 wRC+ vs LHP (trade) Danny Valencia, 135 wRC+ vs LHP Jeff McNeil, 124 wRC+ vs LHP (trade) Wilmer Flores, 120 wRC+ vs LHP Asdrubal Cabrera, 117 wRC+ vs LHP Starlin Castro, 110 wRC+ vs LHP (trade) Josh Harrison, 109 wRC+ vs LHP Of course, a few of those guys would be more expensive than others and would make Spangenberg obsolete, in which case Perez could give Shaw some days off at 3B. Asdrubal Cabrera makes the most sense to me. Merrifield or McNeil might cost Hiura or a similar prospect haul. Valencia has the clubhouse issues mentioned above and limited versatility. Flores had weird reverse platoon numbers in 2018 and is questionable at 2B. Castro is expensive. Harrison has not been great recently and is not a huge upgrade over Perez.
  5. I feel like the Dodger clubhouse must be a very dysfunctional place for a variety of reason. Team chemistry was one of the Brewers secret weapons last season, so I'm not concerned with Grandal fitting in.
  6. I remember seeing this guy on TV last season (he's a memorable player), and he looked quite good. Granted it was against the Orioles I think, but I'm surprised at how terrible his end of season numbers are.
  7. Moustakas seems like a cool guy but I don't know why anyone wants him back as a baseball player, especially since it requires moving a better player off his natural position. If we want to do a soft platoon with Shaw, find a 2B/3B who can actually hit LHP well (which is not Moose)
  8. I'm not so sure Marwin is going to get a huge payday when more consistent guys like Lowrie/LeMahieu have settled for 2-year deals and questionable playing time.
  9. Thames had a 110 wRC+ vs RHP too even after his horrible finish (139 wRC+ vs. RHP in 2017), though I can't see them fully platooning Braun. A couple extra weapons off the bench for Braun's (likely frequent) days off to rest.
  10. with 2018 splits RHP CF Cain (109 wRC+) RF Yelich (168 wRC+) 1B Aguilar (130 wRC+) 3B Shaw (134 wRC+) C Grandal (131 wRC+) LF Braun (95 wRC+) 2B Spangenberg (101 wRC+) SS Arcia ([censored]) Pitcher LHP CF Cain (166 wRC+) RF Yelich (162 wRC+) LF Braun (125 wRC+) 1B Aguilar (144 wRC+) C Grandal (106 wRC+) 3B Shaw (66 wRC+) 2B Perez (104 wRC+) SS Arcia ([censored]) Pitcher Would be awesome if we could pick up a 2B/3B who crushes lefties. (FWIW, in his career Josh Harrison has a 107 wRC+ vs. LHP)
  11. I'm not sure what the numbers said, but I was very impressed with Perez's play at SS last year. Dubon is lurking around as well to cover for short periods of time. If Arcia suffers a season ending injury I think we'd have to make a trade to more permanently cover the position, but I would doubt that the ability to play SS plays into who they sign to start the year. We're definitely covered for an emergency, but I was thinking of the scenario where Cabrera/Player X is hitting really well and Hiura is tearing the cover off the ball, while Arcia is struggling again. I don't think Perez bumps Arcia in that scenario, but I could see Cabrera becoming the everyday SS. Then again maybe Cabrera can't even play SS everyday anymore.
  12. I would love to get a guy like Asdrubal Cabrera (or Marwin?) who can feasibly handle SS in case Arcia struggles and Hiura forces his way up. Is Josh Harrison really a huge upgrade over a Spangenberg/Perez platoon?
  13. Why more when we have an elite 2B prospect who could be ready by the All Star break? I wouldn't have minded gambling on a one-year rebound contract for Dozier, but our money was much better spent somehow getting an elite catcher on a one-year deal.
  14. [sarcasm]Brewers trading for David Wright[/sarcasm]
  15. Obligation implies money already guaranteed to a particular player. In theory the entire Twins organization could fold halfway through the 2019 season (more likely the Marlins ) and not field a 2020 team. The organization would still owe those already-guaranteed salaries.
  16. Just sitting here imagining a Hiura breakout and Braun/Aguilar/Arcia having big seasons... CF Cain 2B Hiura RF Yelich 1B Aguilar LF Braun C Grandal 3B Shaw SS Arcia
  17. There are not terrible odds that Thames is better than Aguilar in 2019. I wouldn't trade him unless we are getting a major asset like a SP. Thames was injured of something at the very end of 2018. Don't let it distract you from what a useful (and fun) player he's been for us.
  18. What if they go after someone like Marwin Gonzalez on a heavily back-loaded 2-year deal? I would prefer Dozier but not sure they would commit 2 years to a 2B-only given Hiura.
  19. Grandal's pitch framing metrics are so crazy. Can the Brewers bullpen get even better??
  20. There's a difference between not getting a $300 million contract, and a 30-year-old catcher with Grandal's pedigree having to settle for a one-year guarantee, which seems crazy. Everyone involved with MLB (except the minor leaguers) is making an immoral amount of money, but the question is why the lion's share of that is going to the owners who do absolutely nothing to generate the revenue.
  21. Not the point at all, but probably a topic for another thread.
  22. Would be interesting if they could somehow land Dozier on a one-year deal. Potentially amazing lineup in 2019 with two spots opening again for 2020 (though one is presumably going to Hiura).
  23. My dream acquisition of the offseason!!!!! Stearns is a genius (aka he agrees with me ) One-year is a little a weird but probably in our favor.
  24. Although I'm generally sympathetic to the owners squeezing the players as revenues soar, I never understood why we were all supposed to just accept that Harper/Machado would get the largest free agent contracts in history. They are relatively young but not without red flags. In particular, Machado was mediocre for much of 2017, and Bryce Harper only has one truly elite or even MVP-caliber season out of seven. The potential is enormous, but do you give a $300 million contract to potential alone? The media has been acting like these guys are vintage A-Rod or vintage Pujols, who were machines that could be counted to give you an MVP season every single year. That's not the case with Machado or Harper. (The only current player who is in that league is Mike Trout.) Then again, I was mystified by the Stanton deal at the time, who is similarly not an elite-elite player.
  25. Petricka had great results back in 2014 and was a part-time closer for the White Sox (14 SV). Probably just a depth move though, never hurts to have too many relievers with MLB experience in the system.
