  6. By fWAR, the 5th best pitcher in MLB last year was Dylan Cease at 4.8 fWAR. If Peralta would do that in 2025 (assuming 4.8 for both fWAR and bWAR), his 3-year total fWAR would be 10.1 and 3-year total bWAR would be 9.4. Average per season would be 3.25 WAR. He would only be under control for 1 more season at 8 million. 3.25 WAR times 8.05 million/WAR = 26.1625 million dollars in value - 8 million salary = 18.1625 million in surplus value. So if Peralta was a top 5 MLB pitcher in 2025, his value following the season would be just slightly less than what it is currently using this surplus value method/calculation.
  7. Looks like a basic surplus value calculation. Over the last 3 years, Peralta has been good for 7.3 fWAR and 5.8 bWAR. Average it all out and Peralta is a 2.2 WAR player per season. He's under team control for 2 years for a total of 16 million dollars. So 2.2 WAR per season times 2 years = 4.4 WAR times 8.05 dollars per WAR = a value of 35.42 million, then subtract the 16 million he will earn and his surplus value is 19.42 million which is almost the same number that you had posted (19.56). Can't argue with the estimate at all. If he stays healthy and throw 360 innings over those two seasons, he'll obviously be worth more. If he has some injury problems and throws 220 innings over those two seasons, he'll obviously be worth less. But the ~19.5 million in surplus value figure seems pretty fair and unbiased when you look at what he's done over the last three seasons.
  8. If the Packers are looking for an immediate possibility at center, Seth McLaughlin is likely out. He tore his Achilles in November and the last thing I heard is the typical 1 year recovery time. Maybe could play at the tail end of 2025, but pretty likely he will miss next season.
  9. The free agent receiver that intrigues me is Darius Slayton. He's been pretty much a 700 yard, 3 TD per season type player but he's been stuck with a junk quarterback since day one. Next year will be his age 28 season. Combine numbers back in the day, 6-1, 190 pounds, 32 3/4 inch arms, 10 inch hands, 4.40 40 time, 40.5 inch vertical, 11'3" broad jump, 4.15 20 yard shuttle, 7.00 3-cone. So he's either a great athlete and a very mediocre football player which is what he's been so far, or a potentially good football player that has been held back by crappy quarterbacking. He wouldn't be a priority, but worth giving some consideration. My top 2 free agent targets would still be CB-Carlton Davis and DT-B.J. Hill. The guy who I'd really like is C-Drew Dalman (this center draft class looks pretty bad), and he'd be the first free agent I would approach, but I think it would take 2 or 3 16-18 million dollar cap hits later in the contract and that is higher than I would go. Davis and Hill should come with reasonable contracts and hopefully would provide good value for the money. I am not nearly as optimistic on the cornerback group minus Alexander and Stokes as some...I think they need to add 2 CBs minimum to the group and getting 1 by free agency seems the way to go. The Packers probably only need to add 1 DT this off-season, and Hill just seems like a solid player who could be had for a reasonable price. Sign him, and I'd cross DT off the list of draft needs.
  10. That's true, the highest the Brewer's payroll has ever been. But right now we are at 108 million heading into 2025 (although I've already said that I do think it will get bumped up via an unanticipated trade), and the opening day payrolls in 2014 and 2015 were 103 and 104 million. I just don't think Brewer fans can be real encouraged when looking at the current state of the payroll and where it's gone the last few years,
  11. There always was that rule about college coaches needing to have a five year contract, as any shorter deal would get used against them in recruiting. Would that even apply anymore since all the minor league players are really just playing on one year deals?
  12. Sorry about the typo, should have been that he whacked another 14 million off going into last year, not this year. As it stands, opening day payroll in 2022 was 131 million, currently stands at approximately 108 million heading into 2025.
  13. Zierlein has posted Jack Nelson's grade. Currently late fifth round that will get pushed down into the 6th once all players are added. Quite insulting that he has Logan Brown graded just a shade higher. So far he has grades up for 229 players. #223 is Graham Mertz. Logan Brown should be right down there with Mertz.
  14. For the record, I think Jerry Jones is a dick and overall he's not great for the Cowboys. But historically, Cowboy fans love him. Even when they are upset when the Cowboy's season is over, they always seem to revert back to "Jones is the best owner" attitude a few weeks later. I don't agree, but I understand it. At least with Jones it's obvious that he is desperate to win. I will give him that. He just has to realize that he and Jr are just not good enough NFL GMs. But as far as pretty much all other sports owners (not every single one of them, but certainly at least 90% of them), their priorities as franchise owners goes something like this- #1 - How much free money can I suck out of taxpayers? #2 - How much more free money can I suck out of taxpayers? #3 - Bow to the networks and do whatever they want because as TV money goes, that's how our business goes. #4 - Don't do anything to tarnish my image, as getting in hot water with the other owners could get me kicked out of the cash cow club. #5 - What was my profit margin this year? #6 - Circle back one more time just to make sure I've gotten every last free penny I can via government handout. #7 - I think I want to try and put a championship caliber team on the field this year.
  15. Yeah, like after the 2022 season when Nightengale reported the Brewers were going to cut the opening day payroll. Just about everyone on this very board went nuts saying Nightengale had no credibility. And yep, Attanasio whacked about 13 million off the opening day payroll (and currently has whacked another 14 million off this year...although my gut feeling is they will be adding some payroll before the season via trade). Unreliable Bob Nightengale seems to have some credibility when it comes to the Brewer's payroll.
  16. I've been doing quick and dirty mocks using an online draft simulator (where I pick for all teams, not just Green Bay) and really haven't found many good trade up/trade down scenarios with the way the board sits. There appear to be so many quality CB and DL options in the late first round that there doesn't seem to be any point in trading up. Maybe if CB-Will Johnson slips to #13, I think he would be worth moving up to get, but I don't see him getting past San Francisco at #11. As far as other teams coveting #23. I think the upper tier of WRs are gone in the top 20 (that includes Egbuka and Golden). Again, there are just so much DL and CB talent...not really worth it for another team to trade up to #23. Probably the best scenario is if the offensive tackles, Campbell, Banks, Simmons and Membou all go in the top 20...pretty decent chance that happens...that maybe the Chiefs feel they need to go OT first and deal up to pick Conerly. The dream scenario is that the Raiders or Jets get all QB stupid and decide to trade the house to move up and pick Dart because I think those team miss out on Ward and Sanders. But if that happens, I'd guess the trade partner would be Pittsburgh at #21.
  17. Zierlein has added Huber and Wohler to his rating list. Nelson still not given a grade. Huber, surprisingly, currently sits in the late round four area, but likely gets knocked down to round five when other players are added. Wohler is likely round seven after all players are added. Nelson is a combine invite, so he should be given a grade in the near future.
  18. Is it Mark's job to win a World Series? Frankly, he sounds like a guy who is pretty happy to have just gotten another free 440 million of taxpayer money (maybe 500 million as the details are still a bit murky on where the last 60 million is coming from), and is now content to "provide entertainment" instead of "winning." Really an insult to taxpayers who have been told for decades that costly stadium upgrades are necessary to stay competitive, and then after getting a boatload of free money to question whether his goal is to win a World Series or simply to provide entertainment for families.
  19. I saw that too. Tom Pelissero is reporting that the Bengals are likely to franchise Tee Higgins.
  20. The media really blows it when discussing this issue. To illustrate the problem, they shouldn't be talking about how much money the Dodgers are spending on players, they should be pointing out how much money the Dodgers are throwing away based on the size of their payroll. Currently Cots has the Dodgers 2025 luxury tax payment as $152,869,222. Current projected 2025 opening day payrolls (with almost all of the noteworthy free agents already signed)- 1. Seattle Mariners - 152.3 million 2. Minnesota Twins - 149.6 million 3. St. Louis Cardinals - 146.7 million 4. Detroit Tigers - 145.7 million 5. Kansas City Royals - 128.3 million 6. Colorado Rockies - 126.1 million 7. Cincinnati Reds - 114.7 million 8. Milwaukee Brewers - 108.2 million 9. Washington Nationals - 107.8 million 10. Cleveland Indians - 99.7 million 11. Pittsburgh Pirates - 85.4 million 12. Tampa Bay Rays - 81.7 million 13. A's - 76.8 million 14. Chicago White Sox - 74.4 million 15. Miami Marlins - 69.4 million It's not just a handful a cheap owners anymore. The Dodgers luxury tax payment could be more than the payroll for half the teams in the league.
  21. So Jose Iglesias is a completely different type of hitter than DeJong, but could he fill a similar role if he came to Milwaukee. Basically he was out of baseball for a year and a half, but since the 2019 season he has a slash line of .302/.340/.417/.756 in 1419 plate appearances. .337/.381/.448/.830 last year with the Mets (291 plate appearances), He is now a minus defender at short...probably would be about average as a 2B...but played 130 innings at third base in 2024 and was +4 DRS and +2.8 UZR/150. Brings very little pop to the plate, but has the .340 OBP in his last 1400+ at bats. Stearns already signed his replacement and has said that Iglesias will not be back with the Mets. Also credible reports that Iglesias is only looking for a 1 year deal. He's probably looking as the same 1 year, 1 million dollar type deal that DeJong got...and at face value it seems like he might be a pretty decent addition.
  22. I thought DeJong was the best option left on the free agent market. He's probably a negative WAR player going forward as a shortstop. Bounce Ortiz to short and let DeJong be a full-time 3B. He was a 1.7 fWAR player last year and that is with 70% of his innings at SS where the advanced stats were bad (-9 DRS, -9.1 UZR/150). Third base numbers in 2024 were +1 DRS, +10.6 UZR/150. Projection services have him about a 0.6 WAR player for next year, but I think as a full-time third baseman he has a better chance of avoiding injury and the defensive should be much, much better...I think a 1.5-2.0 WAR season is not an unreasonable projection if he's put at third base. At that point, you just have to worry about the OBP because historically that has not been good, just counting on there being enough home runs to make up for it.
