First round cornerback candidates for the Packers...Shavon Revel, Benjamin Morrison, Azareye'h Thomas...all did nothing the the combine today. Slow zone corner Jahdae Barron ran the 40 in 4.40 but has really short arms (29 5/8) and his vertical and broad jump were just sort of average. Trey Amos,,,not great, not poor, just sort of average across the whole board. But overall, I thought this cornerback class showed really well in the late to middle rounds, great news for the Packers who may be looking at drafting more than one. Maxwell Hairston has been floating in that late second/round three area and he ran a 4.30 40 time, 39.5" vertical jump and 10"9' broad jump...all excellent numbers. Jacob Parrish is on the small side (5-9 3/4), but posted a 4.36 40 time, 37.5" vertical jump and 10'9" board jump. Again, hardly anybody did the short shuttle and 3-cone drill, so very little can be said about agility numbers. One guy that went out there and did it all and lit it up was Darien Porter. This was expected as he was a top track athlete in high school and he was expected to test very well. 6-2 7/8, 195 pounds, 4.30 40 time, 36.5" vertical, 9'8" broad jump, 4.04 20 yard shuttle, 6.71 3-cone drill. Problem is he's a pure athlete. Went to Iowa State as a wide receiver, switched to the defense and only started a total of 7 games (all this year) in 3 years as a defensive back. Even with those eye-popping numbers, I think he's stuck in round three based on the football resume. Some other really good performances that I just don't have time to get to. Could be a nice, deep class of cornerbacks. As far as the safeties, Nick Emmanwori was expected to be great and he was. 6-3 1/8, 220 pound, 4.40 40 time, 43" vertical, 11'6" broad jump. He appears to be solidly in round one now. Hunter Wohler ran a 4.63 40-time, which ended up being the worst 40 time among the safeties. He did do the short shuttle (4.25) and 3-cone drill (6.72), and both of those are very good numbers. No jaw-dropping performances from the tight ends...Terrance Ferguson probably had the best day. Jalin Conyers looked to be a 7th rounder/undrafted type, but he did really well in the short shuttle and 3-cone and may have improved his outlook by a couple rounds. I don't see anybody listing TE as a need for the Packers, but with Luke Musgrave getting hurt again (just like when he was in college...always hurt), I wouldn't rule out the Packers taking one. No problem at all with Kraft, but they don't see to have a whole lot behind him.

Is Metcalf truly an elite receiver? Seriously. 2019 Tyler Lockett = 82 catches/1057 yards/8 touchdowns DK Metcalf = 58/900/7 2020 Metcalf = 83/1303/10 Lockett = 100/1054/10 2021 Lockett = 73/1175/8 Metcalf = 75/967/12 2022 Metcalf = 90/1048/6 Lockett = 84/1033/9 2023 Metcalf = 66/1114/8 Lockett = 79/894/5 2024 Jaxon Smith-Njigba = 100/1130/6 Metcalf = 66/992/5

But it isn't just giving up the pick, it's giving up the pick for 1 year of a player...or giving up the pick and a contract that probably has at least three seasons of 35 million dollar cap numbers involved with it.

I believe the new facility will have a 300 meter track that will be elevated above the playing surface. Think of a mezzanine level, it is supposed to be something like that. I've heard that it is such a horrible design for the track athletes that some of the women boosters have already discussed formally launching Title IX compliance complaints. Yeah, let's throw money at a practice facility to help recruit football players....right when we are entering an era where players will only care about how much you are going to pay them. Come to Wisconsin for $150,000 and world class accommodations and education system, or go to crap-hole university for $175,000 and live in a dorm without electricity and no plumbing. Guess which school 99% of these guys are going to pick.

Carlton Davis was my top free agent target, but a NFL writer (Gregg Rosenthal) just published a top free agent list and he had Davis #10. If that's the way the rest of the league sees Davis, then I would likely be priced out on him...as I had been looking at something like 3 years, 39-42 million. So this has gotten me thinking about Stokes. IMO the Packers need to do something with the position on the veteran market. If not, I think they are looking at a situation where they almost must spend a first round pick or a second round pick on a cornerback and then follow that up with another cornerback in round 3 or 4. Definitely would like to head into the draft with a bit more flexibility than that. Next veteran cornerback I'm looking at is Kristian Fulton. Late second round pick by the Titans, did end up as a three year starter there but apparently was not great. Went to the Chargers last year and by all accounts had a good season. Those "one-year" guys scare me, although admittedly every single draft pick is a zero-year guy when they step onto an NFL field. If it gets past Fulton, Stokes is probably as attractive as any other cheap cornerback out there.

I didn't think he looked 290 pounds on those highlight videos and sure enough, weighed in at 267 pound here. RAS is a pile of crap IMO. Go back to the previous page and you'll see a post about how a football-nut friend told me that he can really run but he doesn't look that agile. This RAS number is totally built on how he runs and how he jumps. 20 yard shuttle, he didn't do it. 3-cone drill, he didn't do it. How can they come up with an "athletic" score with zero agility data? Just glancing through the numbers, I'd probably say Georgia DE-Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins probably had the best day. I don't think he was a real standout at Georgia though. Backup most of his career (admittedly, there is elite competition when trying to get off that bench), did start 10 games this past season...career 37.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 tackles for loss and 4 sacks. He appeared to be a fifth rounder heading into today, I have to wonder if this will move him up into round three? But overall, I thought it was a pretty disappointing day with the amount of guys who did nothing, or skipped critical parts of the workouts. Looks like nobody wants to do the 3-cone anymore. I can understand some of the top guys...but a guy like Mike Green...you'd think the MAC guys would want to step up to show what they can do (Toledo's Darius Alexander stepped up, did everything, and looks like one of the days winners). Really would have liked to see Kenneth Grant do everything as that guy appears to be a really good athlete for his size...he did nothing. JT Tuimoloau, a guy who played really well down the stretch and was getting some real positive reviews...he did nothing. Lots of "doing nothing" today.

What is Freddy Worth When Trades Come Calling?
JosephC replied to jesusoftheapes's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
By fWAR, the 5th best pitcher in MLB last year was Dylan Cease at 4.8 fWAR. If Peralta would do that in 2025 (assuming 4.8 for both fWAR and bWAR), his 3-year total fWAR would be 10.1 and 3-year total bWAR would be 9.4. Average per season would be 3.25 WAR. He would only be under control for 1 more season at 8 million. 3.25 WAR times 8.05 million/WAR = 26.1625 million dollars in value - 8 million salary = 18.1625 million in surplus value. So if Peralta was a top 5 MLB pitcher in 2025, his value following the season would be just slightly less than what it is currently using this surplus value method/calculation. -
What is Freddy Worth When Trades Come Calling?
JosephC replied to jesusoftheapes's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Looks like a basic surplus value calculation. Over the last 3 years, Peralta has been good for 7.3 fWAR and 5.8 bWAR. Average it all out and Peralta is a 2.2 WAR player per season. He's under team control for 2 years for a total of 16 million dollars. So 2.2 WAR per season times 2 years = 4.4 WAR times 8.05 dollars per WAR = a value of 35.42 million, then subtract the 16 million he will earn and his surplus value is 19.42 million which is almost the same number that you had posted (19.56). Can't argue with the estimate at all. If he stays healthy and throw 360 innings over those two seasons, he'll obviously be worth more. If he has some injury problems and throws 220 innings over those two seasons, he'll obviously be worth less. But the ~19.5 million in surplus value figure seems pretty fair and unbiased when you look at what he's done over the last three seasons. -
If the Packers are looking for an immediate possibility at center, Seth McLaughlin is likely out. He tore his Achilles in November and the last thing I heard is the typical 1 year recovery time. Maybe could play at the tail end of 2025, but pretty likely he will miss next season.

The free agent receiver that intrigues me is Darius Slayton. He's been pretty much a 700 yard, 3 TD per season type player but he's been stuck with a junk quarterback since day one. Next year will be his age 28 season. Combine numbers back in the day, 6-1, 190 pounds, 32 3/4 inch arms, 10 inch hands, 4.40 40 time, 40.5 inch vertical, 11'3" broad jump, 4.15 20 yard shuttle, 7.00 3-cone. So he's either a great athlete and a very mediocre football player which is what he's been so far, or a potentially good football player that has been held back by crappy quarterbacking. He wouldn't be a priority, but worth giving some consideration. My top 2 free agent targets would still be CB-Carlton Davis and DT-B.J. Hill. The guy who I'd really like is C-Drew Dalman (this center draft class looks pretty bad), and he'd be the first free agent I would approach, but I think it would take 2 or 3 16-18 million dollar cap hits later in the contract and that is higher than I would go. Davis and Hill should come with reasonable contracts and hopefully would provide good value for the money. I am not nearly as optimistic on the cornerback group minus Alexander and Stokes as some...I think they need to add 2 CBs minimum to the group and getting 1 by free agency seems the way to go. The Packers probably only need to add 1 DT this off-season, and Hill just seems like a solid player who could be had for a reasonable price. Sign him, and I'd cross DT off the list of draft needs.

That's true, the highest the Brewer's payroll has ever been. But right now we are at 108 million heading into 2025 (although I've already said that I do think it will get bumped up via an unanticipated trade), and the opening day payrolls in 2014 and 2015 were 103 and 104 million. I just don't think Brewer fans can be real encouraged when looking at the current state of the payroll and where it's gone the last few years, -
There always was that rule about college coaches needing to have a five year contract, as any shorter deal would get used against them in recruiting. Would that even apply anymore since all the minor league players are really just playing on one year deals?

Sorry about the typo, should have been that he whacked another 14 million off going into last year, not this year. As it stands, opening day payroll in 2022 was 131 million, currently stands at approximately 108 million heading into 2025. -
Zierlein has posted Jack Nelson's grade. Currently late fifth round that will get pushed down into the 6th once all players are added. Quite insulting that he has Logan Brown graded just a shade higher. So far he has grades up for 229 players. #223 is Graham Mertz. Logan Brown should be right down there with Mertz.

For the record, I think Jerry Jones is a dick and overall he's not great for the Cowboys. But historically, Cowboy fans love him. Even when they are upset when the Cowboy's season is over, they always seem to revert back to "Jones is the best owner" attitude a few weeks later. I don't agree, but I understand it. At least with Jones it's obvious that he is desperate to win. I will give him that. He just has to realize that he and Jr are just not good enough NFL GMs. But as far as pretty much all other sports owners (not every single one of them, but certainly at least 90% of them), their priorities as franchise owners goes something like this- #1 - How much free money can I suck out of taxpayers? #2 - How much more free money can I suck out of taxpayers? #3 - Bow to the networks and do whatever they want because as TV money goes, that's how our business goes. #4 - Don't do anything to tarnish my image, as getting in hot water with the other owners could get me kicked out of the cash cow club. #5 - What was my profit margin this year? #6 - Circle back one more time just to make sure I've gotten every last free penny I can via government handout. #7 - I think I want to try and put a championship caliber team on the field this year. -

Yeah, like after the 2022 season when Nightengale reported the Brewers were going to cut the opening day payroll. Just about everyone on this very board went nuts saying Nightengale had no credibility. And yep, Attanasio whacked about 13 million off the opening day payroll (and currently has whacked another 14 million off this year...although my gut feeling is they will be adding some payroll before the season via trade). Unreliable Bob Nightengale seems to have some credibility when it comes to the Brewer's payroll. -
I've been doing quick and dirty mocks using an online draft simulator (where I pick for all teams, not just Green Bay) and really haven't found many good trade up/trade down scenarios with the way the board sits. There appear to be so many quality CB and DL options in the late first round that there doesn't seem to be any point in trading up. Maybe if CB-Will Johnson slips to #13, I think he would be worth moving up to get, but I don't see him getting past San Francisco at #11. As far as other teams coveting #23. I think the upper tier of WRs are gone in the top 20 (that includes Egbuka and Golden). Again, there are just so much DL and CB talent...not really worth it for another team to trade up to #23. Probably the best scenario is if the offensive tackles, Campbell, Banks, Simmons and Membou all go in the top 20...pretty decent chance that happens...that maybe the Chiefs feel they need to go OT first and deal up to pick Conerly. The dream scenario is that the Raiders or Jets get all QB stupid and decide to trade the house to move up and pick Dart because I think those team miss out on Ward and Sanders. But if that happens, I'd guess the trade partner would be Pittsburgh at #21.

Zierlein has added Huber and Wohler to his rating list. Nelson still not given a grade. Huber, surprisingly, currently sits in the late round four area, but likely gets knocked down to round five when other players are added. Wohler is likely round seven after all players are added. Nelson is a combine invite, so he should be given a grade in the near future.

Is it Mark's job to win a World Series? Frankly, he sounds like a guy who is pretty happy to have just gotten another free 440 million of taxpayer money (maybe 500 million as the details are still a bit murky on where the last 60 million is coming from), and is now content to "provide entertainment" instead of "winning." Really an insult to taxpayers who have been told for decades that costly stadium upgrades are necessary to stay competitive, and then after getting a boatload of free money to question whether his goal is to win a World Series or simply to provide entertainment for families.
