  1. can I suggest that we pushpin this thread or something? LOTS of good information that we seem to answer about once a month on the board with new topics created.
  2. I have a doozy of a meeting on Friday morning with a parent who thinks that she can write a note to excuse her 3rd grade son from my general music class (and only my class) because he thinks I pick on him. Of course, she refuses to believe that the school needs a note without an expressly written reason to excuse him. This is a state requirement (as is music class from grades K-5) and our district could get into serious hot water if this is not followed through by our attendance secretaries. Of course, the child will still be in school. He just doesn't want to come to my class. Ever since the end of 2nd grade when he was forced to do the music final test, he has despised me (or maybe it's my class--I don't know.) But it sounds like his mother is giving him the sense of entitlement that he doesn't have to take a state required course if he doesn't want to. I plan on discussing that he doesn't have to come to my class if he doesn't want to--no reason to ruin music class for the other 25 students if he's just going to act up with an attitude problem. But he will have to do a music curriculum outside of my classroom. They probably won't like that. And since the kid is a very good student, he will be asked to do a quality job on the homework that I assign or he will be asked to join the rest of the students, since he can't seem to grasp things on his own. And his 1st grade and 5th grade brothers are just fine. Little angels in my class who, like 99.5% of the remaining 600+ students in our school, love coming to my class (by far, most everyone's favorite specials class.) BOY, I CAN'T WAIT FOR MONDAY MORNING!
  3. Cameron is good for our team because . . . er, I mean . . . . I think Melvin had to pick up the option at the time that he did because (a) like you said, he probably was thinking of dealing him, and (b) back in November/December he still had no clue how the market was going to play out. At that time, $10 Million for Cameron was probably a "fair" deal (this is arguable, of course, and in hindsight it was probably a mistake.) I'll still take him, however. A proven veteran is always a good thing. You know what you're going to get from the guy (e.g. stellar defense, .250-ish avg. with 20-ish homers, some speed on the bags) which is a whole lot of different from depending on the unproven (i.e. Tony Gwynn Jr. or Chris Duffy). And, like I said, a veteran leader is needed on a team of young guys. Some may argue that Prince, JJ Hardy, and Weeks could be leaders on the team since they are 3-year veterans (or so), but you really need some older guys that have been in the league for a number of years (read: more than three; more like 10) to show some guidance and leadership. But that's just my opinion. I'm sure others will disagree, which is fine.
  4. I guess my favorite poster is hammytime. If you don't know, hammytime is my wife. She doesn't post too often, but when she does, she usually makes it count. Oh, and she's my wife, so I better pick her. I appreciate all the mods and administrators, too. But I can't really pick a favorite of the rest of the crowd. And thanks to those who voted for me!
  5. Yes, it was certainly a different take on the awards presentation. I kind of liked their dissection of the way a movie is put together and how they used props and set pieces with camera pans. However, I, too, did not like seeing clips for the major nominees. The really good thing about the ceremony was that for the first time in years (probably ever) I had my best night of predicting winners that I've ever had. I hit 13 of the 24 awards, while my wife only got seven correct. It was great! Makes up for last year (and most years, really) when I only had 3 right the whole night.
  6. I'll agree with pretty much everything that others have said thus far. That said, I'm patiently awaiting the start of the season to see how their nightly show will compare to Baseball Tonight on ESPN. Will they really have things non-Yankee/RedSox biased or will those teams garner the majority of the first 20 minutes every episode. I think it will be pretty neat having them on from the start of East Coast games until the West Coast games are over. I would imagine there will be live look-ins all over the league, since they installed their cameras in every ballpark. Bob Costas, I assume, will handle the play-by-play but who is the color commentator? Is Trenni the sideline reporter? I also assume that Matty V. will anchor the nightly desk or will he be sharing duties with some of the other non-players they have? I also love hearing Harold Reynolds again, as well as Dan Plesac and Barry Larkin. I was pleasantly surprised when they had Mitch Williams on the other night, too. And Jim Kaat gives an old-time feel to the network, giving some different views of the players.
  7. Milk is still $2.59-3.09, depending on brand, here in Arizona. DARN CALIFORNIA AND UTAH COWS!!
  8. I watched it on Wednesday night, too. Very well done, with updated interviews and everything. I liked how they tied things to 2008 at the end as well. I wonder if they will produce a show for (just about) every MLB season in history.
  9. I agree with most comments, but I disagree about a report about injuries. I actually like to know the scoop about a player and what may have happened to cause a player to leave a game. It also is kind of nice to know the severity of the injury. Could it wait until the post-game? I suppose so, but I appreciate knowing before hand, as it can possibly calm me down a bit and let me breathe again. Of course, in the case of severe stuff, it could probably cause small waves of panic and terror. Otherwise, the sideline-reporter stuff is just fluff and isn't necessary. Is it me or does it seem like there has been less of the "fluff" pieces with fans and crazy stuff in the past 1-2 seasons? There are the interviews with the guest relations people and the coaches, but those are to inform the fans, not entertain. I can't remember any interviews that were "goofy" talks with crazed fans or anything.
  10. Thanks for the recap and your take on the signing. I appreciate your input. I think it's also a very smart attempt by Atlanta to get somebody that can perhaps help them out. And if he doesn't pitch at all this year, I like how you think--he can retire as a Brave.
  11. I still think Theriot's expression is pretty much the expression any opposing team player would have for just about any home run during the season. Plus, he has that smug look on his face that says, "eh, what do I care? We nailed down our playoff spot last week." Yeah, yeah, you may say that he's out of focus and blurry, but I can see it, darn it all!!!!!
  12. now, see, those shots are much better (no offense to the lead picture) since there is so much more to see than just Braun's backside. (well, to me at least) Is that Escobar poised up with his leg on the railing? Good thing he didn't fall and tear a hammy or something.
  13. Yep, still watching. I, too, enjoyed the episode last night. I still think the show is great. Sure, the last few seasons were a little questionable, but I still watched and was entertained. I like how they are "slowly" answering some questions this year, too. Wonder if they'll show what happened to the plane and the other passengers. When in time did they arrive on the island? Guess we'll find out next week.
  14. I've got to say that I'm pretty indifferent towards the WBC. Sure, it's baseball and there is alot of national pride in the event but too many guys (esp. pitchers) are risking their career with an arm injury. I know there is just as much risk in spring training games, but, to MLB players who are paid pretty substantially, this is small potatoes, at least until maybe the semi-finals or so. I'm sure I'll watch a little bit, but I won't be going out of my way to change my schedule to see these games. Curiousity has set in here: did I read correctly a while back that after this year's WBC, they will go to a 4-year rotation? I believe they only made it 3 years this time so they would not be on the same rotation as the World Cup, Olympics or anything else. Is this correct? Does anybody else remember this?
  15. I would just think that with all the photographers at the game that day that somebody from the third base side would have snapped a better angle on that shot.
  16. I'm waiting for them to stay in Washington DC for next season, but have it be winter. I think it'd be awesome if Jack had to do some car chase or drive across town in white-out conditions. Heck, just some slush would be cool. I haven't watched any of those goofy (read: dumb) movies that spoof all sorts of things (e.g. "Not Another Teen Movie," "Scary Movie," etc.) so I don't know if they've already done it, but I think it'd be hilarious for them to spoof "24." Jack in a snowstorm can't get out of the parking lot without doing some doughnuts first, while Chloe is saving Jack's hide, they pan across CTU and spot people playing Solitaire on their computers, etc. TC, I agree, though. There are always too many moles. Is it really like that--moles all over the place? If cops and FBI agents shoot for hours a week at the range, how come they can't hit the broad side of a barn when it really counts on these shows, anyways?
  17. I'll be honest, I didn't realize that the photo was "famous." I mean, you can't even see his face. I also don't think that I have seen that photo before. Anyways, I won't close the thread yet. Maybe others have more pictures/screen grabs of the fist pump or whatever. I honestly thought you were talking about when he rounded FIRST base and gave a high five.
  18. I'm assuming you guys are much more talented than Michael Scott and his Improv comedy class. This sounds like a great idea for an evening out with the wife. I can't make it, of course, but I would think many people here would appreciate new and different ideas for "date night" or whatever. I love improv comedy and can be pretty good at, or at least so I'm told. Sometimes I don't even realize that I'm doing it and people are cracking up left and right. You're right on about the structure needed in the comedy. However, I've noticed that many performers seem to hold on tight to the same basic schtick and just do variations of it every time, even though the improv suggestion was "way out there." Not just on "Whose Line is it Anyways" either--some comedy clubs I've visited more than once was pretty much the same basic formula for the improv bits every time. Got old kind of fast, especially when you saw the jokes coming from a mile away, since you had basically seem them before.
  19. I did a complete double take the first time I read this thread title. "Why in the heck did McClung sign with the Pirates?! He's OUR property!!!" Then, I read it again and said, "oh." I think it's a fine signing for the Pirates. They need SOMEBODY for the fans of Pittsburgh to be excited about. Lord knows that all their high draft picks used on pitching haven't done very much. He's certainly more deserving of a contract like this than Brady Clark was, right?
  20. I think it depends. Is she the type that will rub things in your face when the Cubs do things well and take it like a real trooper when the Brewers do well? Or is she that type that will rub things in your face but cry to daddy when you try to do it to her? Or will she be totally cool about everything like a normal couple? Same questions for the rest of her family. Personally, I don't think I could do it unless she and the family were cool about everything and playing everything up as very friendly competition. By the way, thanks for the tips on my sinuses. The cold is probably halfway gone but sinuses still ache. My left nostril seems to be inflamed, too, and is very dryed out (press on the outside and the insides stick together for a split second).
  21. I got to the purchase screen for some tickets but decided not to get them yet as I'm waiting for some information. But otherwise, I only ran into the "issues" that others have stated once.
  22. I will second TLB's comment here. We live in Arizona and the Extra Innings package is heaven. However, I would recommend adding the Sports Pack, too. Sure, it's another $12/month (something like that) but then you DO get the pre- and post-game shows on the FSN channel (669 for the Brewers--at least it was last year). I didn't get the Sports Pack until 2 years ago. Prior to that, it was frustrating as all heck to watch an exciting finish, have a post-game interview with a player begin, you're just as pumped up and excited as the players are, and then BOOM the channel goes black. It royally sucked. Big time. Otherwise, I can not recommend NOT getting the packages for us out of state Brewers fans. And, as others have said, you get (just about) every other game, too! Vin Scully, Krukow & Kuiper, Dave Niehaus, Matt Vasgergian (oops, not in SD anymore), and the others.
  23. my wife and I are going to make a pact that once the Brewers broadcast all their games in HD, we're getting the new 50" HDTV and Directv HD. For those on Directv out of Wisconsin, the WMLW games are usually on, but not on 669. They're usually found in the 680s or so. I still remember those years (wasn't too long ago, really) that we only had about 100 games on television. And then, there were the days growing up when it was a small handful of games on Channel 18 and then hope and pray that they were on NBC Game of the Week on Saturday. We've really started getting it good. When does that contract with FSN end again?
  24. I listened to the audio clip that was posted this morning from his interview. He sounds good--there's a little bit of Powell in his voice. I know that I heard him do some Cubs innings the past year or two but I remember very little of it except for, "Hey, this isn't Pat Hughes. And Santo seems a bit quieter and subdued now. Maybe Pat had a heart attack or had to visit the restroom." (this was my thought, in case you didn't figure it out.) I'm sure he'll be fine for about 147 games this year. Those 15 against the Cubs will be the games that we'll have to watch for. Unfortunately for him, there's a Cubs-Brewers series during the first week of the season, so I guess we'll find out quickly. For those that do remember what he sounds like, is he really dry? Funny at all? I know that his excitement level on the air would be hard to judge since he only worked the 5th inning (not really bottom of the 9th kind of thrills in the 5th inning.) Again, his voice sounds good and strong. He loves baseball, so it's not like he's doing his 2nd (or even 3rd) favorite sport on the air half-heartedly. So Cory, welcome aboard!!!! Wonder if anyone has got word to him about our nice little family site here. . . . Maybe Powell left him a note . . . . .
  25. I thought the exact same thing, robin. However, no matter what Kendall might think, he really needs a day off every now and then. At his age, he's getting to the point where he is going to start breaking down. Sure, he had his (arguably) best season defensively in his career last year but it all the work really seemed to affect his offensive prowess as the innings kneeling behind the plate piled up. Good for Macha making a stand on this. Wonder if this is a one-time thing or going to happen a lot. Hope the players understand and can accept it.
