  1. I do find it funny that back in April some people were singing the "Jeff Suppan Praise Hymn" after he began the year 4-2 with a 2.55 ERA. Some of us thought he was the second coming and that it was a great signing. Of course, his BAA in April was .276--not that bad but not that great either. We all knew he was not that kind of pitcher though. We all hoped that we had made the signing of the decade but it was highly unlikely. As someone else posted, he has historically been a very average inning-eater pitcher, who just happened to be awesome against the Brewers (or was it we just sucked back then?) I am happy that he eats innings and keeps us in the game, for the most part (anybody care to go back to Scott Karl or Julio Mosquero or some dude like that?). I truly believe he will not "stink" like this all year. I am truly hoping that as we get more and more into the playoff push he will buckle down and get that focus that he had last October.
  2. speaking of Gallardo, is he even still on the team? He hasn't pitched since Friday, the team has 2 games til the break, and Yost let's Suppan go 2 batters too long in the 5th, presumably to save the bullpen or something. If they have 2 long relievers (Gallardo and Villanueva) why not get one of them in earlier when it was fairly obvious that Suppan had lost his command. sorry for the vent, but I saw a Gallardo connection made a few posts up where in the vent thread, I'd have to make a new "topic" inside of it. Thought this fit better here.
  3. boy, I've been willing to put up with Weeks for a while now, but tonight kind of took the cake for me. Hole in his swing like I've never seen before--especially on breaking balls. This all-star break can't come soon enough for him. I'd seriously consider playing some Counsell and Graff more regularly after the break if Weeks starts off the "2nd half" slowly again. I tend to agree that sending him down will do nothing. But perhaps he needs one of those "shake down" demotions to single-A ball or something, where he can get his stroke down and his confidence up. Of course, for all we know he has a "confidence" problem with his "shyness" that he appears to have and that could set him back even further.
  4. peavey beat me to it. I used to win games like that all the time in MVP 2005 then lost serious interest fast as a result. Now that I've got the 2007 mod (for PC) I play along with the real schedule with realistic results and stats. I couldn't be happier with a video game of baseball (maybe RBI Baseball). I just don't see the point of playing a baseball (or any sports game) on the easiest level (or a skill level that you can still dominate). Congrats, though, on the accomplishment! You've done something I have not done.
  5. boy . . . . 7-for-7 in only 7 innings? Hard to do, especially if the Brewers only score 17 runs. Good luck with that. okay, I know you're only half kidding around.
  6. ugh, this pink text really makes the IGT hard to read. Very hard on my eyes. Go Brewers! (ah, that's much better!)
  7. we stayed at a Hampton Inn out by the airport and then took the Metrolink all the way into the stadium. It literally let's you off right at the front door. Of course that hotel was about $120 a night but dang if it wasn't nice. Thought I was in a luxury hotel. I imagine downtown is a bit more pricey. Otherwise, when we researched we didn't find anything less than $100 unless we wanted Motel 6, and even those were hard to come by.
  8. didn't we have this discussion a few months back? I seem to remember posting about this. I looked, however, and didn't see it on any pages. It must have expired the 20 page ezboard limit. Anyway, it is totally a matter of opinion. Two schools of thought. (1) the 12 games over argument because we need to lose 12 games to fall back to .500 or (2) the 6 games over argument, which is basically the "if we had lost 6 games instead of winning them, we'd be at .500" I subscribe to point #1 most of the time, but #2 is completely valid at times. Also, the end of the season record is up for debate, too in this same vein. If the Brewers finish 86-76, some people will say "10 games over" while others will say "5 games over." At the end of the season, I pick the "5 games over" argument. But that's me. I don't think there is a truly "correct" argument. It's pretty much each person's choice of which way they want to look at it.
  9. I'll tivo the game also and watch it at some point. My interest in the game is kinda screwy. I'd prefer the National League to lose the game. Now here me out as my reasons are very thrifty, personally. Okay, and sorta self-centered. My wife and I, as season-ticket holders (we pay for her dad and sister's tickets, but they are in my name), will definitely be attending the World Series, assuming the Brewers go all the way. However, we are teachers in Arizona. So we have to fly on a semi-whim if they make it, too. To minimize any loss of sick days, we'd prefer the NL lose the game so the Brewers would host the weekend games of the series. That way, we could fly up on Friday night/Saturday morning, go to the games, and fly back Sunday night (yeah, we'd miss game 5, but oh well. The dad and sister can have that game.) We're still unsure how unused plane tickets work if we buy tickets ahead of time and they don't make the series. Anybody know? Does it vary by airline? Somebody told me I could just pay an additional fee to the airline to change those tickets to a different flight in the future. Granted, we are going no matter what, so if the NL wins and the Brewers host games 1, 2, 6, and 7, then I guess we will make some sacrifices and choose which set of games we want to go to (it's tough to decide on guaranteed games 1-2 or the chance that they will play 6-7 with the chance we might miss any WS games completely). I guess we could do both, but that would mean taking an entire week off of school, which isn't really fair to our students (especially with the quality/quantity of substitutes available in our district.) Okay, I'm rambling. This is so far off yet.
  10. I haven't looked at a scoreboard yet, but it would be just perfect if game 2 ended in a 1-0 score, or some other low score like that.
  11. CUBS LOSE! NICE!
  12. anybody else listening to mlb radio and Uecker there? Your John Tesh is in my Bob Uecker! Your Bob Uecker is in my John Tesh! (as Shouse entered the game, the feed was a dual feed with some John Tesh radio show, so you had to listen to both he and Uecker)
  13. Islands just said it for me, but I'll go on record (especially after checking out that 20-14 game) that I'm not going to get excited yet. Happy? Yes. Confident, heck no.
  14. ugh, and that's the problem when Uecker is on Leno now a days. The last 3 times I've seen him on Leno, that's all Jay did was pretty much feed lines off a cue card for Uecker to play off of. It made it lame because it ended up being the same stories and jokes that I've heard from Uecker so many times. I wish Leno and his writers would just let the man talk. Or, instead of feeding him lines, begin a conversation with a current affair or something and let Uecker go wild.
  15. yes, they did. The mound used to be 12 inches high or something like that. After the '68 season, they lowered it to the current 10 inches.
  16. hooray for Tony! I hope he plays decently. But what do we expect? Really, he's this year's Marshall Edwards. But who knows? He "stepped it up" to start the year, albeit a small sample. Maybe he's one of those guys who takes his game up a notch in the majors and will continue to hit in the high .290s-low .300s. And maybe not. Regardless, I'll cheer him on and make the best of it. It can't be worse than cheering on Drew Anderson and Chris Barnwell last year, can it?
  17. hear hear, dougjones! Well, said! oh, and you're wrong. j/k!
  18. did anybody actually "see" the injury on mlb.tv or anything? I know it wasn't on MIL or PITT television so I only had Uecker to go with on what the play looked like.
  19. well, the Astros in 2005 pretty much played like garbage for 2 months of the year and then went on a tear to get back into the race. Looks eerily similar to the Cubs so far. As for the "Cubs in the rearview", it's beginning to look like we need to put the ol' "objects are closer than they appear" disclaimer on said mirror.
  20. The Vent Thread is only on page 59! Most seasons, we're on page 59 at the end of May! I'm clinging to extreme hope that it does not reach to page 90 this season.
  21. I love baseball for the home runs. Because chicks dig the long ball and I dig chicks. So let the home runs fly! [looks over shoulder] oh, hi dear! What's up? Hey where are you going? [pause of a few moments] Hey! Put down that frying pan! What do you think you're do . . . [WHAP!]
  22. I had to dig for this thread a bit, but I was wondering, since today's game isn't on tv . . . . has FSN-Wisconsin announced any "make up" games for their schedule? Since they are losing games to FOX they need to pick some games to broadcast in their place to fulfill their contractual obligations of 125 games (or whatever it is). Anybody hear/read/know about FSN adding any games?
  23. but still, just a little bit of history HAS to play a part in the back of the mind, no matter how good they are now. for instance, I enjoy teaching and am very good at it. However, once or twice a year, there is always a lesson or a class that no matter how much effort I put into it to do my best, I know in the back of my head that some student (my Pirates) will ruin it and make me tread lightly whenever I teach that lesson/class. I can be good all year round but when I teach that lesson/class, something always seems to go wrong and I know it going in. Probably a bad example but it's late.
  24. jason, your argument works very, very well for this year, and, to a point, last year too. But how about 2004 (2-6 in PITT), 2002 (3-6 in PITT), and 2001 (1-9 in PITT)? Granted, those were COMPLETELY different teams back then (even 2004) but still. . . . As my wife just said, it's like the Packers in the 90s traveling to Dallas. Even though Green Bay was the better team on occasion, they just couldn't win there. Same thing with the Metrodome and Favre. It's semi-mental.
  25. Roma's used to be made in Black River Falls, WI which is where I lived for a few years in high school. I ate a few of those and regularly had some sent down to college when I couldn't find them in stores. The Rising Crust with the little wheel thing is the bomb. Or at least they used to be good. Here in AZ, not much to go with, short of your Tombstone, Red Baron and the regular national brands. Haven't tried the California Pizza Kitchen 'zas before--too expensive for my taste. Occasionally, I've broken down and bought 'el cheapo Safeway brand pizza (grocery store chain). Haven't bought a Totino's since college. I figured I have graduated from perpetual poordom so I can at least afford a slightly better frozen pizza than that.
