  1. well, we officially suck again! notice the teal font, as I'm not quite sure if this should be sarcasm or not. Not a knock on Snell, by any means, as he's a pretty solid pitcher. But, just like last Friday, a nice first inning and NOTHING afterward. Cubs lose and we can't take advantage. At least they didn't gain on us, but still. Maybe this belongs in the vent thread. Go get 'em Sheets. You've been the stopper, ne Ace, all season for the most part.
  2. I'm hoping for a big ninth, but so far, the Brewers started out like a great big bottle rocket but have fizzled more than a tiny firecracker. Totally have ruined my 4th of July thus far.
  3. Couldn't anybody else in baseball have said this exact same thing about Mike Maddux about 3-5 years ago? I think so.
  4. Happy Birthday America! So today's agenda is this: --Patriotic Music playing on the stereo all day --Brewer game interrupts Patriotic music for a few hours --slow cook some ribs on the grill --listen to Boston Pops concert on the internet (darn thing isn't broadcast in it's entirety like it used to be. I'm sure I'm in the minority on this one, but my wife and I loved the concert--even the classical stuff. One goal in life is to be in Boston for the concert and fireworks) --watch what little of the Boston Pops concert and fireworks they do show on CBS --get the ladder out and climb up on the roof around 9:00 pm to watch fireworks in our town. Last year's were cancelled so this year they have double the fireworks. Should be pretty good. --Find something Patriotic to watch on TV (The Patriot, Independence Day, something . . .) --Oh, yeah. Drink alot of beer. But not so much that I can't get up on the roof. Oh, and stay out of the sun. Supposed to be about 116 here today. Oof. EDIT: I've decided to grill some hot dogs for lunch and push the ribs back to dinner, in honor of a great American victory today.
  5. I sat back in my recliner as Mench homered and the next thing I know, it's a 6-2 final. From reading here, it didn't look good on the defensive side (I saw the first 2 errors, not the latter). Gallardo pitched well and not so well, from what I gather in the IGT. Is it too much work after pitching the other day or is it a shorter warmup period in the bullpen than he is accustomed? I don't know. I do agree that they should just keep him in the rotation. The Pirates broadcast had a shot of Prince beating up/punching the water coolers in the dugout. He looked MAAAAAAAD! I'm guessing a bit of frustration is setting in on him as he hasn't gone yard in about week, never mind seeing/hitting the ball well.
  6. I'm in the avenue of extreme hopefulness that Bonds' 756th home run will land in a bullpen so nobody will get some lottery ticket and then have to fight for the ball/his life and/or have people suing each other, etc. etc. That got old REAL quick a few years ago when he hit #73. BTW, after he breaks the record, won't there be just as much grabbing/punching/fighting for every one of his remaining homers, since each one could, potentially, be his last HR ever?
  7. I always liked Jayson Durocher. Thought he could be a top-notch reliever.
  8. ESPN probably figured that nobody would care that Bill Hall robbed the Pirates on 2 consecutive outs in the outfield by making sensational sliding catches. I say this because, they probably thought, "It's the PIRATES! You're SUPPOSED to get those guys out! So any diving catches against THEM means they weren't good enough to coax routine fly balls instead, which is just unexceptable when you play the Pirates." Okay, just slightly tongue-in-cheek.
  9. without looking at a schedule in front of me and not knowing if they have a game that day, I'll guess July 23rd.
  10. YAY! A Victory in Pittsburgh. I'm really not worried about using Carlos V. for four innings. I totally agree with peavey and a few others that guessed maybe he is being stretched out for a move into the rotation. I could see that. At the same time, why mess with what's working? As for Spuling, eh, what can you do? He's this year's Jaime Easterly.
  11. well, that shows me that I needed to look at the comparison of those guys side-by-side. I pretty much assumed that either Peavy or Penny would take it based on all the coverage and media love they've had this past month. Sheets just quietly got the job done.
  12. well, I'm trying to persuade the wife to at least go to Monday's game but since we report back to work on Tuesday morning at 8 am and we live 3 1/2 hours from Phoenix, I don't think it's going to happen. I want to, just doubt it.
  13. Wow! Braun is Rookie of the Month and Sheets is Pitcher of the Month! That's awesome way to start this series. Ann Carroll actually looks decent up in Eau Claire out of the studio. Skin looks much more softer and smoother and not caked in makeup. Of course, she looks like she's 12 years old sitting behind the big desk on a too-small chair.
  14. I don't think non-All Stars can participate in the Home Run Derby.
  15. wow. Most impressive. Almost brought a tear to my eye. Almost. Now if only we could, you know, beat the Pirates in 4 straight (didn't want to say "the word"), THAT would put a tear in my eye. Still, very well written. I sent the link to a couple of baseball fan buddies of mine so they can check it out. Maybe they'll register as a result.
  16. by the way, I will apologize now for hijacking the thread. I did not mean to do it. But I didn't feel the need to start a whole different thread when these two conversations probably could work in one thread.
  17. no problem, Jason. Like I said, I think he is a good "semi-mascot" for the team, if you will. I guessed I get a little peeved/jealous maybe about all the face time he gets mainly because he's rich enough to get the face time, making himself sort of look like the world's biggest Brewer fan, when I know deep in my heart that he'd have some serious contention from many of us here, including myself, for that title. It just seems like he bought that title. Even if it's not an official title. Jeez, I'm rambling.
  18. Ah, you know what? After closer inspection, you're right! That's NOT the doorman! The site I found that picture on is WAY wrong. Sorry about that. I'll see if I can find another photo.
  19. yes, the Doorman is the gentlemen that sits beside the 3rd base (opponent's) dugout, usually wearing a Brewers/Pilots jersey of some kind (I think I've seen him wear every Brewer/Pilot jersey available--oh and they're the "authentic" kind not the "replica"). He is almost always visible in the camera shot of a RH batter coming from the 1st base dugout. He occasionally is given close ups of him "showing a player the door to the dugout" after strikeouts. He has a beard/mustache combo. Here's the best photo I can find online: http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n116/pitchleague/bondsk.jpg
  20. I would think that installing the old barrel and chalet somewhere in the stadium for fans to take pictures of would be great. Even better would be if they set it up somewhere (concourse, parking lot) that fans could pay to go down the slide and get their picture taken, like at an amusment park. Heck, just build a miniature version and permanently install it up by the retired numbers or something. As for the logo question, ender, I understand the uniform rule about the shape of a baseball, etc. But that's just on the actual uniform itself, correct? Not the hat?
  21. since nobody vented today, I will, even though it has nothing to do with today's game. The Doorman. I know many fans are enamored with him. He gets to be on tv all the time and has become a semi-celebrity as a result. My vent is this: I and many others on this site are just as big of a Brewer fan as he is and the only reason that I don't get to be on tv all the time is because (1) I live in AZ; and (2) I'm not rich enough to buy season tickets right beside the dugout every year. I know this is petty but it bugs me that many people glorify this guy. I could understand if he was some superfan in the cheap seats that shows undying devotion to the club (like the Drum guy or that nun in Cleveland among others on other teams) but this guy and his girlfriend/wife Stephanie (I know her name because she got to do the in-game trivia thing on the jumbotron on Tuesday when we were there) obviously have spectacular well-paying jobs (or inherited it/won the lottery) that pay them very well. Maybe if I knew more about the guy and what he actually does for a living might change my opinion a bit (for all I know he does philanthropic work for needy children) but right now he bugs me alot and the "coolness" factor has begun to rub me the wrong way. End of vent.
  22. well it was a full moon yesterday so that semi-explains the eerie-ness level of the similarities.
  23. Just wondering, as I've neither been to Wrigley nor been a woman . . . If the guys use troughs are the women's bathrooms "normal" with stalls or did they plant bushes of ivy in there for the women to squat behind?
  24. didn't Narron just sign a contract extension this winter or late last season? EDIT: Never mind, he signed it June 28, 2006 effectively extended thru the 2008 season.
  25. not blaming Mother Nature here, but even if it's a calm/no-wind day (yeah, I know, in Chicago?!?!?!?) the Brewers have about 3 homers today and about 7-8 runs. Of course, the Cubs would have also done the long ball dance and scored about the same.
