  1. Since the start of the 2020 season Brandon Woodruff & Corbin Burnes are 1st/2nd among all starters in rWAR while Devin Williams & Josh Hader are 1st/2nd among all relievers in rWAR.
  2. From 1993-2004 the Brewers won the 2nd fewest games in MLB among non-expansion teams. From that first five hundred season in forever in 2005 through today the Brewers have won the 10th most games in baseball. Over the last four seasons (the "Stearns Postseason Era") the Brewers have won the 6th most games in MLB.
  3. Some wild ones tonight... Carolina offense had a great game tallying nine runs with Tyler Black (3-5, 2 2B), Alex Binelas (3-5, 2B, HR) and Wes Clarke (2-4, HR) leading the charge. Unfortunately Delmarva put up eighteen runs of their own, though LF Noah Campbell pitched a scoreless 9th to go along with his 2-4 at the plate. Ohtani who? Wisconsin prevailed 8-7 in a true team effort with everyone except Ashton McGee notching a hit (though Ashton still managed to contribute both a run scored & batted in) while Zavier & Zamora had multi hit games & JGJ HR'd. Nash Walters struck out 5 in his 2 IP. Blue Complex won 5-1. Luis Medina had a pair of hits & Hendry Mendez's double represented the lone XBH for the offense while Alexander Cornielle (5 IP | 1 ER | 6 K) & Ryne Moore (2 IP | 2 K) took care of business on the mound. Gold Complex lost 2-1 with Alwinson Valdez contributing the lone multi hit performance on offense while Lun Zhao (2.1 IP | 2 K) & Pablo Garabitos (1.1 IP | 4 K) had the best pitching lines.
  4. 19-9 record in August with a +38 run differential for the month. Enter September with a 10 game division lead.
  5. Yeah, I really like Howell's speed/defense combo, but kind of think of him in more of the (hopefully super) utility category. Red flag for Korry is that 29.8% K rate, though his 10.9% BB rate & .202 ISO offer some encouragement. Obviously not one to one comparisons with everyone different ages with different sample sizes at different levels, but here's how the "Big Five OF" have fared in the same categories... Mitchell: 24.2 K% | 17.8 BB% | .163 ISO (256 PAs) Frelick: 12.2 K% | 11.2 BB% | .163 ISO (98 PAs) Hedbert: 25.8 K% | 6.1 BB% | .242 ISO (132 PAs) Gray Jr.: 27.6 K% | 11.4 BB% | .272 ISO (413 PAs) Wiemer: 21.8 K% | 13.1 BB% | .242 ISO (390 PAs)
  6. Jake Cousins now unscored upon in 20 of his 22 appearances. 36 of the 91 batters he has faced have struck out.
  7. On the outside looking in teams with their current postseason odds... OAK | FanGraphs: 17.3% | PECOTA: 27.8% | 538: 33% TOR | FanGraphs: 11.4% | PECOTA: 8.5% | 538: 11% SDP | FanGraphs: 28.4% | PECOTA: 52.5% | 538: 20% PHI | FanGraphs: 23.2% | PECOTA: 35% | 538: 23% NYM | FanGraphs: 16.6% | PECOTA: 8.5% | 538: 4% Only number that really jumps out to me is that Padres PECOTA, who have the Reds at only 39.6%.
  8. He's played 101 innings in CF, 89 innings in RF and 22 innings in LF so far this year. Mitchell & Frelick have better scouting reports for CF defense, so if all three end up in Milwaukee someday Hedbert would probably be in a corner, but thats a long ways off yet. Defense is always the trickiest to judge. Lawrie was supposed to be a bat first / find a position for him somewhere prospect that got most of his career value from his glove & never hit after his first callup. Arcia was supposed to be a gold glove caliber SS but put up middling defensive numbers. Grisham was consisered a marginal CF defensively in the minors but has won a GG & graded out as a top 5 defensive CF the last two years.
  9. I'd put Hendry Mendez ahead of all the guys in Tier 3. Ranked #32 on the FanGraphs preseason list, doesn't turn 18 for two months & has put up a 319/406/484 triple slash with 12 BB / 9 K in 107 PAs split between the DSL & ACL.
  10. Quick Summaries of the Complex League Games from Monday... Blue defeated the Guardians 12-6. Hendry Mendez lead the way going 3-5 with a 2B & BB, while Jose Sibrian, Branlyn Jaraba & Jose Caballero each notched a pair of hits. Sibrian took over for Quero after the 1st inning, so hopefully nothing too serious for Jeferson. On the pitching side Santiago Elizondo struck out 4 over 2.1 scoreless IP while Kelvin Bender notched 3 K (& 2 BB) in his inning. Gold also took care of business, winning 9-5 over the Padres. Eduardo Garcia lead the way on offense at 3-5 with a double while Oswel Leones, Alberis Ferrer and Jesus Chirinos each collected a pair of hits. Fray Morelo picked up the Win with 2 scoreless innings (3 BB, 2K) of relief. Also of note, Padres super prospect MacKenzie Gore started for the Pads giving up 2 ER / 8 H over 6 IP with 7 K / 0 BB. https://www.milb.com/arizona-complex/scores/2021-08-30
  11. Yeah, its kind of like the Miggy vs Trout MVP race in 2012. By old school measures it would be Buehler in a landslide. Luckily for Burnes we know now that things like Wins & ERA are more team dependent stats than they are individual ones. The "fairest" way might be to give equal weight to both runs allowed based WAR & FIP based WAR to come up with a composite WAR, which would look something like this... Burnes | 5.4 rWAR | 6.3 fWAR | 5.85 cWAR Buehler | 6.9 rWAR | 4.5 fWAR | 5.7 cWAR Wheeler | 5.0 rWAR | 5.9 fWAR | 5.45 cWAR Woodruff | 5.6 rWAR | 4.3 fWAR | 4.95 cWAR Scherzer | 5.3 rWAR | 3.7 fWAR | 4.5 cWAR Either way both of Burnes & Buehler are more than deserving, just going to come down to what happens over the last month & what the voters ultimately decide matters most to them.
  12. Corbin Burnes currently leading the league in K9, BB9 and HR9. The FIP-ple Crown, if you will. No pitcher has ever lead the league in all three categories.
  13. With no games today & the season wrapping up in a few weeks thought it might be interesting to take a look at some of the candidates for Organizational Player & Pitcher of the Year. Looks like it's probably a couple two tree horse race at this point on the position player side... Joe Gray (413 PAs | 264/366/536 | 19 HR | 87 RBI | 65 R | 19/2 SB/CS) Joey Wiemer (390 PAs | 294/400/536 | 20 HR | 57 RBI | 74 R | 25/6 SB/CS) Felix Valerio (430 PAs | 307/416/494 | 10 HR | 72 RBI | 78 R | 27/8 SB/CS) Seems like it's been Gray's to lose for most of the summer, but Wiemer's heater the last month plus might be too much to ignore, while Felix has sneakily put up pretty similar production. Pickings are a little slimmer on the pitching side where I would guess it is Ethan Small (59 IP | 1.68 ERA | 76 K) in the driver's seat despite missing time with injury. Carlos Luna (69 IP | 2.33 ERA | 74 K) was making a pretty stealth case before landing on the IL himself. Maybe Jake Cousins (39 IP | 1.59 ERA | 63 K) as a darkhorse, though I don't think they normally give it to a guy who spent most of the year in MLB.
  14. It seems like you are conflating two true, but slightly different statements. Division or Wild Card leading teams can lose more than 8 games in a month is true. The last team to blow a division lead over 7.5 games as of August 15th were the California Angels in 1995 is also true. The 2021 Brewers situation is closer to the second scenario than to the first.
  15. On July 28th the Red Sox had a 2.5 game on the Rays. FanGraphs gave them Division Odds of 69% at that time. For comparison, on July 28th the Brewers were 7 games up on the Reds for 92% Division Odds. Even when the Mets were up 4 games on the Braves on July 31st, FanGraphs had their Division Odds at 69.4% vs 93% for the Brewers. It isn't over until the Brewers Division Odds are 100% and the Magic Number is Zero (& even then its only really just beginning) but the Red Sox & Mets are lower true talent level teams in much closer races than the Brewers (99% current Division Odds) are.
  16. The dreaded "If Everyone's Healthy"... C: Omar, Manny IF: Rowdy, Kolten, Willy, Eduardo, Luis, Jace OF: Yelich, Cain, Avisail, Tyrone, JBJ SP: Woodruff, Burnes, Peralta, Houser, Lauer, Anderson RP: Hader, Williams, Boxberger, Suter, Cousins, Strickland, Ashby, Norris That's 27. Imagine the 28th spot will be a rotation between Gustave, Sanchez, Topa, Vogelbach, Reyes depending on how health & team need play out.
  17. Reds/Dodgers pulled off a salary shuffle back in the 2018/19 offseason that was somewhat similar. Cincy wanted off Homer Bailey's 28 million so they attached Jeter Downs (later traded in Mookie deal) and Josiah Gray (later traded in Scherzer/Turner deal) to bring back what they viewed as more useful players in the here & now of 2019, Matt Kemp (21.5 million), Yasiel Puig (9.7 million), Alex Wood (9.65 million), Kyle Farmer and 7 million cash to offset salaries. Dodgers got under the luxury tax & got two prospects back they developed into top 100 guys & later dealt for superstar MLB talent. Reds went 75-87 with their trio of expensive veteran acquisitions chipping in -0.2 WAR for their 33 million in combined "discounted" salary. If Scherzer/Turner help the Dodgers to defend their WS title (puke) this low key might be the most important MLB transaction of the last few years.
  18. Carolina wins 3-1. Martinez (4-5, 2B) leads the way with Frelick & Black both posting 1-3, 2 BB lines and Zack Raabe chipping in a pair of hits. Zach Mort had a nice start (5 IP, 1 ER, 5 K) with Kent Hasler striking out 3 in his 1.2 IP while recent Indy League signee James Meeker picked up the save & appears to have struck out 5 while only recording 4 outs on account of an Alex Hall passed ball. Nashville pulled out a 3-2 win with Dustin Peterson driving in a pair & Turang walking thrice. Kind of a blah melange of a AAA bullpen game on the pitching side, though Topa picked up the win with a scoreless eighth.
  19. On the Complex side Gold team took both ends of a doubleheader against Navy team. A Blayberg Diaz home run provided the lone offense in a 1-0 victory in the first game with Hedbert, Hendry, Eduarqui, Jaraba & Reidy Mercado notching the only other hits. Edwin Jimenez (6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) had a nice game with Israel Puello (4 IP, 6 K) & Brannon Jordan (1 IP, 3 K) also posting impressive lines. Game two saw a little more action at 10-3. Hedbert lead the way at 2-3 with a 2B, BB & 2 RBI while Alberis Ferrer hit a bomb, Oswel Leones went 2-2 with a 2B & 2 BB, etc. Not much of note on the pitching side, though Lun Zhao picked up the win with his second scoreless frame of the year.
  20. Quick wrap for Saturday games... Carolina loses 5-4. Frelick the only multi hit guy on the offense side at 2-4. All eight Carolina hits were singles. Nate Peden (3 IP, 0 ER, 5 K) had the best pitching line. Wisconsin loses 12-0. Zavier, Zamora & Valerio each doubled with Warren adding a single to account for all four Rattler hits. Chad McLanahan pitched a scoreless eighth. Nashville wins 2-1. Dustin Peterson's two run walk off bomb provided the offense while Small (2 IP, 2 K), Sanchez (1 IP) & Gustave (1 IP, 2 K) recorded zeroes with Luke Barker transforming from the losing pitcher after giving up the lone Gwinnett run in the top of the 9th to the winning pitcher after the walk off in the bottom half.
  21. So has Strickland. Not only is it amazing to think where the Brewers might be without them, it's also amazing that they were acquired for simply cash and were basically given away or not pursued by other teams. Cousins fits this bill too. Even Feyereisen was a marginal acquisition who chipped in 22 solid relief innings this year before getting flipped for some SS with a .197 batting average.
  22. Saw that recent Indy Ball signee James Meeker had another scoreless inning with two strikeouts last night. Now up to 4 G | 6 IP | 0.00 ERA | 7 K | 0 BB since making the jump to affiliated ball. Yes, he's a 26 year old in low A so the results need to be taken with a huge grain of salt, but he also put up 39 IP | 0.00 ERA | 55 K | 13 BB over 2020-21 before signing with the Brewers, so not giving up runs is nothing new.
  23. Can't read that because I'm not a subscriber, but I'm seeing December 1st here on the official MLB page... https://www.mlb.com/news/details-of-mlb-mlbpa-labor-agreement-c210125462
  24. Oh, but we were told repeatedly that the Padres took the Brewers to the cleaners on this deal. This was never a deal that was going to be able to be judged off of immediate returns. Padres got a nice 60 game head start for sure, but Trent Grisham has posted 2.9 WAR so far this year per Baseball Reference while Urias/Lauer have posted 3.1 WAR so far this year per Baseball Reference. Reports of Lauer (86 ERA- | 101 FIP- | 102 xFIP- so far in 2021) possibly being able to replicate Davies production (91 ERA- | 99 FIP- | 105 xFIP- w/ Milwaukee) while being cheaper, younger & left handed appear to be coming to fruition this year as well.
