  1. Not a home game, but for some reason I remembered that bomb Gagne gave up to Fukudome on Opening Day at Wrigley as a walk off, but just looked up the box score & it actually just tied the game in the bottom of the 9th, with Gagne eventually getting out of the inning after 31 pitches. Top of the 10th, Counsell leads off with a pinch hit double, Kendall bunts him to 3rd, Weeks HBP & then TGJ sac flies CC for the go ahead run. David Riske closes it out for the save retiring Theriot, Soriano & Derrek Lee in order for the save. 2008 kinda seems like forever ago.
  2. Yeah, the crux of the issue seems to be that improving wages & living conditions for minor leaguers is going to require some degree of collaboration between the owners & the player's union...and we know how that usually ends up.
  3. Charlie Berens...Is that you? Voice to text strikes again.
  4. Would have been nice if they got one more guy somehow, but I think the PJ situation is kinda similar to the Brogdon situation from a cap/tax standpoint. Assuming they extend DDV as an RFA and re-up Bobby on a closer to market deal after the season their tax bill will probably be right up there with the Nets for 2022-23. On the other hand, they just won it all playing ostensibly seven guys (postseason minutes played)... Khris (922) Jrue (912) Giannis (800) PJ (681) Brook (667) Pat (546) Bobby (366) Forbes (273) Teague (119) Main thing will be health again. If everyone is good to go come playoff time DDV steps into PJs minutes, Bobby gets more playing time, then it comes down to Hill, maybe Nwora if he figures out some semblance of defense, maybe a trade deadline pick being that 8th guy in the postseason rotation. Bring on Summer League!!
  5. Without any kind of source from Law, that looks like editorializing presented as fact to me. "ruined him as a hitter" and "someone took that away from him" seem overly hyperbolic, even for Law. When did the Brewers allegedly try to make this change? It didn't negatively impact Keston's results all through the minors or his first 348 PAs in MLB.
  6. If pitching Wins have any bearing on winning the Cy Young at this point the award itself has become irrelevant. It really has moved away from wins recently. DeGrom won it in 2019 with a record of 11 - 8 They've gotten better, but Rick Porcello won as recently as 2016 because he went 22-4. Porcello | 223 IP | 3.15 ERA | 189 K | 6.1 rWAR | 5.1 fWAR | +2.18 WPA Verlander | 227 IP | 3.04 ERA | 254 K | 6.7 rWAR | 5.4 fWAR | +3.95 WPA As for NL 2021, I guess it will come down to what the voters want to focus on. By FIP based WAR it's a two horse race between Wheeler (5.1) & Burnes (4.9) with a sizeable gap before guys like Woodruff (3.9) and Buehler (3.6). While FIP might be the best true talent estimator, in terms of what actually happened most voters will turn to ERA. By runs allowed based WAR it is a little closer with Buehler (5.5), Woodruff (5.1), Wheeler (5.0) and Gausman (5.0) bunched together before a slight drop down to Freddy (4.7) then guys like Scherzer (4.1) and Burnes (3.8). He'll never win it, but by Win Probability Added the best pitcher in the NL this year has been Hader (+3.51) with Woodruff (+3.37) just behind then a little bit of a drop off to guys like Wheeler (+2.91), Buehler (+2.79), Peralta (+2.78) and Scherzer (+2.78).
  7. You're more tuned into the defensive metrics than I am so I'm wondering how the defense is doing? Seems like it's gotten a ton better since the Adames trade but that's just eyeballing it. They don't offer the custom date splits of FanGraphs for fielding stats, but Urias is at +5 DRS / +0.9 UZR at 3B this year vs -4 DRS / -4.4 UZR at SS while Adames has been at +4 DRS / +1.7 UZR, so infield defense has probably improved (in addition to runs scoring & the bullpen) since the Willy trade. On a team level for the season so far Brewers rank 5th in DRS (+43) & 2nd in UZR (+16.6) which is probably a contributing factor the team having a 3.33 ERA vs a 3.68 FIP with that -0.35 difference representing the 5th largest margin in MLB to this point.
  8. There are 148 starters with at least 50 IP so far. All six of the Brewers starters rank within the top 60 by ERA... Peralta (2.25, 4th) Woodruff (2.26, 5th) Burnes (2.46, 8th) Lauer (3.30, 37th) Anderson (3.67, 54th) Houser (3.71, 58th)
  9. When Milwaukee will miss the two best pitchers (DeSclafani just went on the DL this week) on a team that is #1 in fewest runs allowed, certainly is a nice stroke of luck. Probably will get Alex Wood, Logan Webb, and Johnny Cueto. Edit: Nope, Alex Wood pitching today, Gausman pitched Wednesday, DeScalafani on DL. Webb, Cueto and bullpen day? Aaron Sanchez made six starts before getting injured on May 4th. Since coming back on July 30th he's made two apparances out of the pen covering five innings. Other guys on the 40 man that have made starts this year are righty Zach Littell & lefty Sammy Long.
  10. Giants are lined up for Wood, Webb & then it would be Desclafani but he is on the IL. Cueto pitched Tuesday, so with the day off Thursday would be on regular rest for Sunday. Gausman has also cooled some after a scorching start... First 12 GS: 77.2 IP | 1.27 ERA | 93 K | 16 BB Last 10 GS: 54.2 IP | 3.79 ERA | 64 K | 23 BB Will be interesting to see who gets the call if SF ends up in the Wild Card game & Gausman's results down the stretch are closer to his last two months than his first two.
  11. Well, I for one will be having tons of fun watching their short game. Haha. Yeah, I might...might...even go to a couple two tree Cubs games at AmFam now after avoiding them for a little while.
  12. Kevin Goldstein had a pretty interesting article over at FanGraphs about how losing teams will use the last two months of the season... https://blogs.fangraphs.com/how-losing-teams-will-use-the-last-two-months-of-the-season/ Cubs excerpt, Based on their acquisitions, the Cubs are playing the long game and the short one isn’t going to be much fun to watch.
  13. Looks like JJ currently has an 8.22 ERA with 10 K / 7 BB over 7.2 IP with the Lexington Legends of the independent Atlantic League. Brandon Phillips is hitting 275/318/480 for Lexington & has even stolen four bags at age forty.
  14. Yup. Most teams end up cycling through closers every couple two tree years just because it's pretty rare for relievers to be both healthy & effective for multiple seasons consecutively. Looking at the reliever leaderboard since 2000, Mariano is still 1st with 29.2 WAR & he hasn't pitched in eight years. Chapman is second, 9 WAR behind Rivera, leading a group of five guys (Kenley, Nathan, Kimbrel, Papelbon) grouped between 19-20 WAR. Rounding out the top 10 are K-Rod, Wagner, Soria & Rafael Betancourt around 15-16 WAR. Even starting in 2010, to make it a little more contemporary there is a pretty big drop off from the three active guys in the 19-20 WAR group down to David Robertson in 4th at 13.3 WAR. Then a grouping of Holland, Betances, Melancon & Doolittle around 11-12 WAR. I feel like a lot of baseball fans probably think something like half of the top ten relievers over the last ten to twenty years suck.
  15. After Portis resigned I ordered one of those Bobby!! Bobby!! Bobby!! shirts. Hopefully after the Brewers win the whole dang enchilada someone will make one for Rowdy!! Rowdy!! Rowdy!!
  16. Earliest memories of County Stadium definitely involve Plesac coming out of the pen to "Saw Her Standing There" (talk about an intimidating closer song) and when it got to the "I wouldn't dance with another" part the PA guy would drop the volume and everybody would scream out the "WOOOOO". Also remember Chuck Crim being a pretty nails setup man for Plesac and the original CC did have a nice three year run to start his career... 87: 53 G | 130 IP | 125 ERA+ | 2.6 WAR 88: 70 G | 105 IP | 137 ERA+ | 1.7 WAR 89: 76 G | 117 IP | 137 ERA+ | 2.7 WAR
  17. There are a number of factors that go into it, but certain players are able to maintain higher BABIPs over the course of their careers. I'm not sure when BABIP starts to stabilize, kinda feels like it never really does, but Willy's got 1,527 PAs now since 2018 with the 11th highest BABIP in MLB. Thought his batted ball profile was kind of interesting... w/ TBR: 99 Pull+ | 100 Cent+ | 101 Oppo+ w/ MIL: 108 Pull+ | 85 Cent+ | 109 Oppo+ w/ TBR: 101 LD+ | 108 GB+ | 89 FB+ w/ MIL: 113 LD+ | 79 GB+ | 105 FB+ Keep in mind we're talking about 1254 PAs with TBR vs only 273 PAs with MIL so far, but it looks like being able to actually see the ball has helped Willy to get it off the ground with much more frequency.
  18. Kind makes sense with Hader but still surprising he never got one when Josh was unavailable or just lucked into one. Nice catch. Assumed Devin got one at some point last year, but I guess there weren't that many games to save. Just checked & Alex Claudio was the only reliever besides Hader to save a game for the Brewers in 2020.
  19. Figured I'd give this a bump for Devin's first save of 2021. He's also rounded into form nicely since a slow start... First 7 Games: 6.2 IP | 6.75 ERA | 10 K | 6 BB | 1.015 OPS against Last 35 Games: 31.2 IP | 1.71 ERA | 52 K | 17 BB | .520 OPS against
  20. I'd imagine any fans the Reds might have are much more annoyed by the Brewers. Reds were 7.5 out of first on July 19th. Since then they've gone 8-4 & are still 7.5 out of first. That whole getting swept at home after the All Star Break thing to drop 7 games back had to be pretty annoying too.
  21. Pretty sure there were rumblings about Oladipo last offseason too, worked out with Giannis or something. Probably the highest upside of anyone we could get for the MLE, but could also be hurt & miss most of the season. Maybe Suki could work a little magic in that department.
  22. But if Turang starts at A+, that would've bumped Hamilton down to A & then what happens to Zamora? Just wait it out for rookie ball at the complex? Yes, Turang's walk rate is down, but his K rate is also down at 15%, while his Isolated Slugging is at a career high. It appears he is being more aggressive early in the count, which would theoretically lead to lower BB/K rates & a higher ISO. Sure, he wasn't tearing AA up with a 98 wRC+, but he's also three and a half years younger than average in the Southern League or whatever its called now while playing at the top of the defensive spectrum. Give him a taste of AAA this year, then he'll know what to expect & hopefully better prepare over the offseason heading into 2022.
