  1. PEDs are probably just as rampant as ever, though I would assume the guys have moved on from the anabolic steroids of the old days which built muscle mass to HGH or similar substances that aid with recovery & are less detectable. 538 & the Ringer recently ran pieces suggesting that the ball may be juiced, which I believe accounts for most of the surge. An increasing number of players & organizations are also shifting their hitting philosophies to attempt to get more balls in the air as that is where the overwhelming majority of extra base hits come from. 538 link: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/in-mlbs-new-home-run-era-its-the-baseballs-that-are-juicing/ Ringer link: https://theringer.com/2017-mlb-home-run-spike-juiced-ball-testing-reveal-155cd21108bc
  2. Yeah, I think JohnBriggs12 mentioned that Ray is not as good as Jimenez. Regardless of where Jimenez is ranked on the prospect list, not sure how you can equate him to AAA/MLB players like Hader and Brinson. Seems like many are completely just disregarding that Quintana has started 169 MLB games and is controllable through 2020. Right. Ray is not as good as Jimenez, in either performance or reputation, which is why leading off a supposedly comparable offer with Ray in Eloy's place doesn't make any sense. I think Quintana is a very solid MLB pitcher, even though his peripherals and results have been trending down for multiple seasons at this point. But would I have given up Brinson (#16 on BA's midseason list vs. #5 for Eloy) and one of Woodruff/Hader/Ortiz (#s 43/61/67 on BA's midseason list vs #83 for Cease) plus filler, which is an actual comparable deal to land him? No. Would I have done Briggs deal for Quintana? Absolutely. Because it is much less than the Cubs surrendered.
  3. Corey Ray is nowhere near the prospect that Jimenez is. Eloy was just ranked number 5 by BA in their midseason update, Corey did not make the list. Jimenez is sporting a 131 wRC+ in high A ball at age 20, Ray is sporting an 88 wRC+ in high A ball at age 22.
  4. Great for Cooper, too. Glad he is getting his chance & I hope he rakes for the Yankees. Between Aguilar & Thames (& maybe even Gatewood) we should be alright at 1B for the next little while.
  5. Love this move. Why pay the premium for a "proven" reliever when you can maybe get the same (or possibly much more) value from an under the radar guy that just hasn't gotten a legit chance yet. Looking at his minor league numbers he seems like he could be very similar to Grant Dayton for the Dodgers last year in that he's a guy that has had success all through the minor but doesn't have the "stuff" to be considered a true prospect. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he is a high spin rate guy & that was part of the reasoning for targeting him.
  6. Do we get 1/2 a point for Kintzler?
  7. It's great that Shaw's 1st half stats are comparable to Bryant's but if MLB is picking one of the two to go on the final vote ballot I can understand why they chose the defending MVP from the defending World Series Champions over a guy that isn't even on the Red Sox anymore.
  8. As great as Knebel has been so far this year Kimbrel & Jansen have been in an entirely different stratsosphere. Craig & Kenley are currently sitting on 0.39 & 0.43 FIPs compared to 1.81 for Corey. Only four players have ever posted a FIP below 1.00 with the previous record low in a season being 0.78 by Kimbrel in 2012. They're on the verge of breaking the model.
  9. Most consecutive relief appearances with a strikeout to start a season, rolls right off the tongue.
  10. The 2016 Brewers had essentially nine "good" players who contributed a total of 19.5 of our 25 total team WAR per fangraphs count. Of those nine, four (Lucroy, Thornburg, Jeffress & Smith) were traded. The five players (Braun, Villar, Broxton, Davies, Guerra) from that productive 2016 group that were back for this year, through a combination of injury & diminished effectiveness, have only produced 0.8 of our 15.6 team WAR so far. So despite our five top returning players providing next to no collective value & a bullpen that has lost the most games in MLB, the Milwaukee Brewers are somehow in first place after sixty three games. Ninety nine bottles of beer on the wall, ninety nine bottles of beer...
  11. Hardy has always graded out extremely well by both publicly available systems, +89 career DRS & +103 career UZR, for whatever that is or isn't worth. Out of 26 individual seasons (13 seasons x 2 systems) he only ever graded out in the negative once @ -5 DRS in 2010, though UZR had him at +7.5 that same season so who's to say what the truth was.
  12. Mike Trout only started 32 of 57 games (56%) during his two stints with the Angels in 2011, imagine what could have been if they'd only started him with more frequency. Wouldn't starting Nieuwenhuis over Santana down the stretch last year decrease our chances of winning since Kirk was an inferior player? With every loss being advantageous to our draft position wouldn't that make it a smart move in the long term?
  13. Brinson has started four of six games prior to today and pinch hit in the other two, so he has played every day to this point. Domingo Santana didn't start every single game last year to the chagrin of many posters and it doesn't appear to have hindered his development in any noticeable way to this point.
  14. Best play ever by a Brewers SS might have been Bill Hall catching the ball after it popped out of Koskie's glove on the play that ended Corey's career.
  15. That's not a very resounding compliment to our coaching and development personnel in the minor leagues. Who's to say that changes weren't suggested to Haniger & he was hesitant to incorporate them because he'd had success his whole life doing things one way, so why change? What is known is after being traded by the organization that drafted him & getting sent to A+ by the acquiring organization at age 24 he decided he needed to make major changes if he wanted to reach the ultimate goal. Kudos to him for doing so. He's certainly exceeded any realistic expectations at the time of the trade.
  16. Broxton struck out 28.6% of the time at AAA in 2015 & 30.2% of the time at AAA in 2016. Maverick has struck out in 30.3% of his AAA plate appearances this year so far after posting a 29.8% K rate in AA last year. Not sure Phillips will be the solution to any excessive strikeout issue which may exist.
  17. Losing anyone, no matter how valuable on the field, for a few games is not a significant loss. Even as one of the best run producers on the team, not having Shaw available will only negatively impact the Brewers win probabilities in those missed games by a couple two tree percentage points, if that. Even is he were to be lost for the entire remainder of the season it would probably only cost the Brewers about two projected wins and that's assuming his production thus far this season is sustainable & that he would be replaced by a replacement level player. With Perez & Sogard on the team currently as more than capable replacements the projected loss would likely be less still. Congratulations to Travis, his wife & Brett Phillips on a day (or maybe even a few days) that none of them will likely forget anytime soon.
  18. Estrada added a cutter when he went to Toronto & more or less credits the pitch with helping take his career to the next level. Then you've got Baltimore who are so anti cutter that I believe they made Dylan Bundy ditch his coming up through the minors even though it was one of his better offerings.
  19. Coming up on a quarter of the way through the season and we still are "leading" MLB bullpens with 12 losses & 28 meltdowns. While the overall bullpen ERA of 3.88 (10th in MLB!) is somewhat encouraging the underlying 4.16 FIP/4.32 xFIP (both 16th in MLB) make it appear as if our bullpen has somehow slightly overachieved so far this season, as scary of a thought as that is.
  20. Weekday night games are close to 100%, weekday afternoon games are 0%, weekend games are 50/50. Try to watch Quick Pitch most nights to keep abreast of the rest of MLB.
  21. I think Thames probably just needed today off, regardless of the handedness of the starter. He was noticeably shaken after diving for that ball down the LF line yesterday & was moving pretty gingerly the rest of the game it seemed.
  22. Ahem, that is OFFICIAL FACE OF MLB 2014 RUNNER UP Eric Sogard for those of you keeping track at home. If you had any intention of attending an upcoming home game I highly recommend buying tickets now before they sell out & the secondary market goes crazy.
  23. Feliz has looked pretty shaky even when he hasn't given up runs (only 6 of his 18 appearances have been baserunner free & 2 of those were only a single batter faced) but I think you've got to give him a few more blowups before you shuffle the roles at this point & hope he figures things out.
