  1. Believe the seeds for signing Garza were planted when the agent he shared with Braun started chatting up Attanasio at Braun's wedding... http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/owner-mark-attanasio-talks-brewers-budgets-and-braun-031414
  2. Good call on Espino, AndThat. Has definitely been one of the more interesting new names to follow in the Sky Sox box scores so far this year.
  3. Thanks for sharing the article on Archer, Mass. I caught one of his spring inning this year on MLB network or FSN & was really impressed with his stuff. There were a couple two tree pitches I thought looked like quality strikes that I think moved so much the umpire couldn't get a read on them. It was all the more impressive because I hadn't recalled ever seeing his name before.
  4. Too young to be of any help but I absolutely love that James/Neyer Guide to Pitchers, definitely one of my favorite baseball books of all time. So much great information there. Especially enjoy some of the period accounts they were able to find for some of the lesser known pitchers from back in the day.
  5. Bradley with a little more insight into his decision to walk away... http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/jed-bradley-no-longer-enjoying-the-game-he-loves-walks-away-at-26/
  6. I feel like a file named "turdero.jpg" could be so many worse things than what it actually is.
  7. Always liked August's stuff at FanGraphs. When he left they said it was to take a job with a team, cool to see it was the Brewers.
  8. I know most of us have moved past beyond judging pitchers based on wins & losses, but one time I do think it can be helpful is when looking at relief losses on a team level. After the month of April the Brewers have an MLB worst 8 relief losses with Tampa Bay & Kansas City close behind with 7 each. Another stat I like for relievers is ShutDowns & MeltDowns, which they track at Fangraphs. A similar idea as saves & blown saves, but applicable to all relief outings, not just the 9th inning with a lead of 3 runs or less. Currently the best bullpen has been the Rockies with 31 ShutDowns against only 7 MeltDowns. The Brewers conversely have an MLB worst 21 MeltDowns with Toronto 2 behind (ahead of?) us at 19. Anyway you paint it what has been a relatively encouraging month of April otherwise has been somewhat dampened by the bullpen's results. I agree with those that think the bullpen should & likely will be the last thing addressed throughout the rebuild but at this point the only guys in the pen I think have a real shot at being plus arms as part of a contending bullpen are maybe Barnes & Knebel. Will be interesting to see how Stearns & company address this moving forward and what steps they will take to try and acquire some premium relief arms.
  9. That will tend to happen when MLB drains your precious bodily fluids after every game.
  10. I believe the reason the PED advantage has shifted to pitchers currently as opposed to hitters as we saw with Bonds/Sosa/McGwire & the rest is because the type of PEDs being used has evolved. At the outset these guys were using anabolic steroids designed to build muscle mass whereas with increased testing the shift has been towards HGH which is much harder to test for definitively & aids more in speeding up recovery time, much better suited for hard throwing relievers.
  11. From September 10th to September 25th last year Villar went 59 plate appearances with a line of 083/254/163, not too far off from the 133/200/317 he is sitting on currently through 65 plate appearances.
  12. No doubt it's a small sample, but it is encouraging nonetheless. When the projections came out lots of people thought they were optimistic to the point of representing a best case scenario instead of a median baseline. I think what Thames has accomplished thus far makes it much more plausible that the computers & the Brewers scouts saw something that those who were only focused on his failures from four plus years ago missed. Do I think Thames will finish the year with a 258 wRC+ & a single season ISO record? Of course not. Do I think he could realistically post a 120ish wRC+ and surpass 2.0 WAR for the season? Sure.
  13. Yeah, I think baseball reference has some bad info here. The JS Online article also lists the 7.5 million as a team option and jibes with monty with regards to Thames being a free agent after the contract expires... The deal will pay Thames $4 million in 2017, $5 million in 2018 and $6 million in 2019, with a club option for 2020 at $7.5 million, with a $1 million buyout. The contract stipulates that Thames cannot be sent to the minors without his permission. The Brewers also agreed not to offer him salary arbitration after the contract expires, allowing Thames to become a free agent ahead of schedule.
  14. Thames currently at 1.0 fWAR & 0.9 bWAR. If the price of a win on the free agent market is said to be right around 8 million dollars he is already halfway to "earning" his three year contract...two weeks into the first season.
  15. Blows my mind that an organization as supposedly forward thinking & historically defensively conscious as TB would put Weeks anywhere near first base. He always looked extremely uncomfortable over there covering from second on bunts and obviously lacks the ideal height for the position. I guess if he hits around his career average of 128 wRC+ against lefties it's maybe kinda worth it?
  16. Heyward has always graded out extremely well in the range components of UZR/DRS, +111 & +133 respectively for his career while they've had his arm as average (+2 UZR) to slightly below (-11 DRS).
  17. It looks like MLB is measuring velocity slightly differently this year than in years past so some perceived velocity gains may be a result of that change... http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/about-all-these-velocity-spikes/
  18. Really? I am legitimately curious what you don't like about it? In my opinion, it is not only infinitely better, but has been way overdue. The viewer can now actually judge pitch movement and location. It is a completely different (positive) viewing experience for me. I'm getting used to it but it seems like pitcher ends up blocking the view of the plate for portions of time depending on their stature/delivery/follow through. At least when the angle was slightly askew the view of the plate was uninterrupted.
  19. Yes indeed there is a lot to like about Jesus How crazy would it be if he turned out to be the team's saviour?
  20. First game I've been able to watch on TV this season & not sure how I feel about this new camera angle.
  21. If the season ended right now we'd have a top 7 pick in the draft!
  22. Does this qualify? http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l68/cthawkinson/Cheese%20sandwich.png Looking at this originally I thought they were supposed to be slices of cold pizza which immediately made me think of the legendary Sheets appearance on the ESPN show of the same name which seems at this point to be lost to the annals of the internet, infinite time & space, etc, etc...
  23. Kind of tough to gauge Wily's value, though he did look pretty solid in his ten starts to close the season after coming back from AAA. Looking at the Rangers prospects I could see someone like Joe Palumbo possibly being of interest.
  24. Looks like The Fresh Prince is heading for TJ. Wishes for a speedy recovery. With Thornburg also likely to start the year on the DL with the Red Sox I think we're seeing why it's a good reason to trade relievers once they cross a certain value threshold as that accrued value can be wiped out at any instant.
  25. Some quotes from Lucas in this article about Driveline Baseball & their weighted bat training program... http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-tools-of-baseballs-fly-ball-revolution/
