  1. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/prospect-reports-arizona-diamondbacks/ Anthony Banda & Mitch Haniger checking in at #1 & #3 on Fangraphs list of prospects in what looks like a pretty bad Arizona farm.
  2. I checked the Rex Sox performance during Theo's time in Boston. They won the division only 1 time out of 9 seasons. Clearly you can build a winning team without winning divisions. Something to keep in mind is it was much easier to win the World Series as a Wild Card under the old system when you were guaranteed at least 3 games. From 1995-2011 there were five Wild Card World Series Champions. From 2012 when they switched to the single elimination game until now there has been only one Wild Card World Series Champion.
  3. Yeah, the two plays at the plate from last night perfectly illustrate how much grey area there is in reagrds to send him/hold him decisions & the numbers subsequently produced by those decisions. The play where Gonzalez was called out was probably a good send. Sure he was ruled out but it was extremely close and could have gone either way. If the throw is just that much farther up the line he is pretty easily safe. The play where Toles completely airmailed the throw was probably a bad send. Like hurricanecrush said, the runner was right at third as Toles was fielding the ball & even a standard Khris Davis throw probably gets him at home. So in the two instances from last night the "good send" resulted in an out and the "bad send" resulted in a run scored.
  4. The call is relayed to the home plate umpire in real time via ear piece so there would not be any significant change to the pace or rhythm of the game in that regard.
  5. Really interesting information, Baldkin. I never realized that baseball reference tracked team baserunning stats in such detail. Here are how the Brewers have fared in terms of runners thrown out at home during the Sedar era (2011-16) and over the same size sample previous. League average has fluctuated between 16 & 19 runners thrown out at home per year from 2005-16. 2016: 27 (1st) 2015: 19 (15th) 2014: 19 (12th) 2013: 27 (1st) 2012: 24 (5th) 2011: 27 (5th) (Pre Sedar) 2010: 18 (15th) 2009: 19 (11th) 2008: 18 (17th) 2007: 14 (26th) 2006: 23 (5th) 2005: 23 (4th)
  6. Will definitely be interesting to see who gets a bigger contract between Kenley & Aroldis. Kenley just turned 29 and has 408 career innings with 13.92 K9, 2.62 BB9, 0.66 HR9 and a 2.20 ERA (169 ERA+). Aroldis will turn 29 before opening day and has 377 career innings with 15.18 K9, 4.13 BB9 & 0.45 HR9 and a 2.08 ERA (192 ERA+). Andrew Miller got 4/36 two years ago but he really had only had one truly dominant season at that point & the relief market has definitely taken off in the two years since. 5/100 seems like the probable floor for Kenley & Aroldis.
  7. The support wont be there from whom? The players, the owners or the fans? I would guess the players would be in support, that is 50 more MLB jobs. Majority of the owners would be in favor I think. Assuming a billion dollar franchise fee times two teams is about 65 million each for the 30 existing franchises. Baseball seems to have 30 regional fanbases moreso than it has one national fanbase so I'd imagine existing baseball fans in whatever cities were receiving expansion franchises would be pretty excited.
  8. Pitchers: Guerra, Davies, Thornburg Infield: Arcia, Villar Outfield: Braun, Broxton, Santana Prospects: Hader, Brinson. Those ten seem like easy calls for me. On the Major League side I'd have Perez, Torres, Nelson & Peralta in consideration for those last five protects along with prospects like Woodruff, Ortiz, Bickford & Diaz.
  9. That was a looooong inning. Will be curious to see if Roberts tries to ride Jansen all the way to the line.
  10. Haven't been able to find out the source of the change, whether it was a suggestion from the Toronto coaching staff or something Marco decided to do on his own, but Estrada added a cutter once he got to Toronto which has helped him immensely. Wondering "what if?" is one of my favorite pastimes but in this instance I think there are too many variables at play to really consider that trade anything but a success based on the information available when the deal was made. I don't think there were too many posters at the time predicting Estrada would be post a top 20 ERA in MLB over the 2015-16 seasons.
  11. At this point I think the best match up would have to be Chicago vs. Cleveland. Battle of the Curses. For Cleveland to go however many years since their last major title & then get two in a row between the Cavs & the Tribe while keeping the Cubs curse intact is probably the best possible outcome.
  12. The Cubs can't properly choke away a World Series without winning the NLDS. Just let density happen.
  13. Agree that Scooter's trade value is pretty low. Good match might be the Angels who got pretty terrible production out of 2B last year. They don't have much in the way of prospects but maybe Stearns could unearth some interesting rookie level arms a la the Lind deal.
  14. Selig & Steinbrenner probably have the best shots here. Will Clark was my favorite player growing up & I think Joey/Albert Belle is probably the closest I ever got to seeing Dick Allen, but they're both Hall of Very Good. Will be interesting to see how the committee votes on McGwire compared to the writers.
  15. Tough to argue we sold low on Estrada when his performance took such an unpredictable jump after being traded, to the tougher league no less. Granted his 2012 was pretty solid but in the two years immediately prior to the trade he was trending down with 2014 being especially brutal, MLB worst 29 HR in only 150 IP. 2013-14 w/ MKE: 4.13 ERA (88th of 111, min 250 IP) 4.41 FIP (101st of 111) 2015-16 w/ TOR: 3.50 ERA (19th of 98, min 250 IP) 4.28 FIP (72nd of 98) His batted ball profile has stayed mostly the same with the only noticeable difference being about a 6% reduction in hard contact since the trade to TOR. It also looks like he added (or at the very least increased his usage of) a cutter since he got to TOR. If anything I think the TOR front office/coaching staff should get credit for identifying someone whose issues they thought were fixable & then fixing them.
  16. I think the 20% pay cut rule would apply. Thanks, casey. Will be curious to see if the O's cut his salary just because they can or if they're a little more diplomatic about it.
  17. There has at least been some progress made lately with guys like Peralta, Nelson, Fiers & Thornburg coming up through the system & having some degree of success at the MLB level. You could kind of count Jeffress in there too, though his route was a little more circuitous. At this point so much has changed from the scouting/front office/coaching personnel in MKE to the rules of the draft itself that it's hard for me to hold the JM Golds, Nick Neugebauers, Mike Joneses, Mark Rogerses or Jed Bradleys of the world against our current crop of pitching prospects.
  18. Was looking at some BAL stuff last night & noticed that oft injured former top pick/prospect Dylan Bundy was on the last year of the MLB deal he signed after being drafted. That deal called for a 1.8 million salary in 2016 & it looks like after this year he has just over a year of service time. So it would seem like he has two "minimum salary" seasons & then three years of Arbys before hitting free agency, assuming his arm hasn't fallen off. My question is about his salaries in 2017/18, is there a maximum BAL can cut his salary by since he's already above the minimum? Do min salary players have to get a small raise with more service time accrued? I know it's just a matter of a few million bucks either way but was curious since it is a fairly unique situation.
  19. Little underwhelmed with the announcement based on some of ideas floated but the concourses at MP could definitely use a visual upgrade. Might help to take away a little bit of that "I'm walking around in a huge warehouse to watch a baseball game" vibe.
  20. At the very least gotta walk Edwin after the back to back hits by Travis & Donaldson then bring in Britton & his 80% GB rate to try for a double play.
  21. Throwing a bottle can of beer (even worse!) at Kim on a warning track flyball, not a good look.
