  1. Here's the hard part: Peralta is hurt. Nelson is hurt. Suter is hurt. There are some options in the minors, but are they better than Burnes? It's probably worth a shot to see, but it's not like there are easy answers, especially since Chase may have to take Freddy's spot. If Nelson comes back, that helps a lot, but I don't want Wilkerson getting the ball every 5th day either.
  2. I will take outs any way they come, but how many double plays has the Crew turned this year? 1? 2?
  3. The Cubs really can hit. I think the Cardinals are the better team overall, bit both offenses will mash. Figured we were due for a clunker this series. Still time, of course, especially agaonst that BP, but I would be thrilled with even a series victory.
  4. This is part of the growing pains. If he learns from it, he's better for it.
  5. Hopefully, threy'll need them. If the Crew just keeps it close, who is the first option for the Cubs in the late innings? Brach after 31 pitches yesterday? Kintzler on a back-to-back? Strop for a multi-inning save opp? Nice to have the more rested bullpen, with Wilson, Guerra, and Hader all real fresh. Barnes too. Of course, I'd just as soon to do Hamels what they did to Quintana last night. Go Crew!
  6. Still doing the casino, 21-run thing? Hold 'em if they are (even if they're not). So much for that. I will take the out.
  7. Seems a bit odd for Maddon to use Brach extensively and now Strop. I get it was 8-5 when Brach came in, but he has been the only guy that hasn't really been lit up. The way it stands nkw, the Crew will see the best options in a struggling BP in a game in which they hold a big lead. That is a pretty good outcome as long as there isn't a meltdown 9th inning. EDIT: I guess Kintzler has been good too, but he came in at 10-5. Boy, that pen is a mess right now. Not saying it will stay that way, but it is ugly.
  8. Weather should be a bit warmer in Cincy tonight. Mid-50s at game time and high-40s around 10 PM ET. With a lead late, I'd imagine we'll see some combo of Williams/Barnes/Guerra. Doubt they push Wilson after multiple innings last night, but who knows?
  9. Yeah, I thought each part of the team had good stretches, but nothing complete. This lineup is tough to get through. Good to see Barnes pitch well today! Every win without using Josh is big.
  10. This last year has put Yelich into lucky to have seen this guy play territory. It's like I keep thinking, "he will make outs eventually, right?" And then he just hits (or walks). My goodness.
  11. Hope Woodruff delivers tomorrow! In a perverse way, I'm glad the first loss of the year is out of the way.
  12. The Cardinals lineup is tough. I am sure they'll go through bad stretches, but some of this is just good hitting.
  13. My take here is the Badgers had a good year. They ran into a hot team in the tournament. Gard has three NCAA tourney appearances and two Sweet 16s. Most major conference schools would love that resume. Next year is really the first all-Gard year. I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar record and overall performance. The Badgers strength has been their consistency. I would rather have Gard than endure a rebuild, and I think Kaminsky's massive breakout and Dekker's all-around skills spoiled us a bit.
  14. There was something enjoyable about watching the Badgers just squeeze the life out of the Gopher offense. There were a couple of possessions where the barn was loud, but it just felt like Minnesota didn't even want to be there at times. If they defend like they have for the last two or three weeks, they may end up a lot better than I thought. It's still going to depend on making outside shots, but you have to be impressed with the D. Vintage.
  15. It's a great question. I wonder every time. That's essentially what Minnesota did and it stopped the Badgers from putting the finishing touches on that comeback earlier in the year. They set up their defense to make it 1 on 1 against Happ. The Badgers would(as they should) get him the ball. The defender would then reach immediately. Happ went like 1 for 9 from the line that game. I think part of this is also that the strategy, to me, anyway, isn't CLEARLY better than just playing it out. In one-and-one situations it is, but when it's Bonus+, Happ is a 50-50 FT shooter. It sure seems lower than that in tight games, but you're still likely enough to give up one point. Wisconsin averages 113 pts/100 possessions (1.13 PPP) per KenPom, so you're maybe saving yourself something but also giving up a foul on an interior player. I'd still do it as a coach, of course, but in the same way I'd foul up three late.
  16. This is weird to say, but I sort of think Happ is both a very good player AND one that they might be better without in some ways. There are times when it really does seem like he is too big a factor in the Badgers own offensive game plan. It almost feels like the team focuses so much on getting him the ball in the post that other ways to score are neglected. I realize that sounds a little crazy, and I don't want to knock Happ at all. We'll see if this jump-starts them. At Illinois, Home Northwestern this week. Need to go 2-0. Things get tough again after that. Computers love the Badgers, but I still think they're going to end up comfortably in the field but far down the at-large list.
  17. Yeah, the offense is putrid right now. There was just no confidence at all for long stretches tonight. I think this team makes the tournament, but a 5-6 looms like the absolute ceiling. 7-10 seems most likely, maybe worse. They still have three good wins (OK on neutral, @Iowa, NC State) and one okay one (@Xavier). If they can beat Michigan, I think they get 4 in a row. This next stretch will say a lot.
  18. Too many turnovers and bad possessions late. Didn't score the last couple minutes of OT.
  19. The problem right now is the Catch-22 players are in. Teams have set up a little bit of a black box in that players can be underpaid for three years (and I get that no one is crying for millionaires, but we should remember that lots of guys are underpaid relative to market and also not forget that minor leaguers are basically working stiffs like us), granted no long-term security in arb, and then told they are too old to expect a massive contract. That, I think, is a problem. The solution has to be something along the lines of what clancy proposed, with salaries driven by production and service time in more equal measure. Right now, it is way skewed toward the latter. As Brewer fans, I think we are going to have the face the possibility of having to choose between a CBA that fixes these issues but makes the situation less equitable from a competitive standpoint (eliminating the QO, reducing the team control window, etc.) or a work stoppage. I hope not, but that is my fear. If I am the MLBPA, I start with either trying to double the league minimum or reduce arby to one year. I think that makes sense given the situation, but it means Stearns and co. will really have to adapt.
  20. I mean, this makes an already good lineup better next year. Beyond that, I wonder. I think our FO loves its young pitching and just isn't going to move any of those guys (Woody, Burnes, etc.). I am generally on board with that approach. I mean, imagine this staff if Nelson cones back strong. Long-term, the Cards pitching just got worse. I would take our staff over theirs at this point I think, and that would have seemed crazy in April.
