  1. Good win for a 4-2 homestand. Will be alone in a WC spot no matter what tomorrow!
  2. There may be a thread about what would make 2018 a success already (I thought I remembered one but cannot seem to find it), so mods feel free to merge or move as needed. Mainly, I wanted to gauge where we are and what would make 2018 a success. I never had realistic hope for the division and thought the WC was the best we could hope for coming in. Lately I have been wondering about how much a WC berth indicates success, so wanted to post a thought or two. I think winning 87-90 games shows progress. Independent of other results, that menas improvement over a surprise 2017 in a more competitive NL. Especially with Nelson's injury and regression from a number of players, it would be hard to ask for much more. That said, I feel like 2019 needs to see the Brewers really have a realistic shot at a division title. The pitching staff should be talented if we add Burnes to the mix, and maybe we get Hiura on the field and hitting too. I think the roster gives the team a chance to compete for 3-4 years, but teams like us cannot waste any of them. If we miss a playoff spot this year, so be it, but expecting to play and win in October should begin with 2019. I think that is reasonable and fair.
  3. I think the Rockies, Dodgers, and D-Backs play each other a bunch in September. It is possible we'll only have to outplay CO or AZ to get a WC. I think the Dodgers are going to get hot, but we will see.
  4. I am of the "there are no must-wins until there are must-wins" school here but totally agree that it is a sanity day, especially with the Monday off day. It is nice to be 2 clear of Philly and LA. I am trying not to scoreboard watch, but it is tough with like 5 or 6 games a day mattering. Just. Keep. Winning (series), Brewers.
  5. Half our remaining games (well almost) are against the Pirates and Reds. If we can just go 9-6 in those, 4-2 against the Giants and Tigers, and split against Cubs, Cards, and Nats, that is 19 wins. Should be enough.
  6. With STL playing in Denver, this feels like a big series. Take care of business and you gain ground on your closest competition either way. Throw in that the Pirates are kind of a house of horrors for the Brewers recently and you've got about as big a series as August can summon. Go Crew! We should be slight favorites in all three, and this team feels due for a sweep, but 2 of 3 would be great from where I sit.
  7. Even when the ninth is easy it isn't easy. Big win to stop the bleeding. Just. Keep. Winning.
  8. Honestly, it is a bit of a relief to not have to defend a playoff spot. I feel like I have been dreading getting caught all year, and now that ot has happened it's like things can get better more than they can get worse. Hope Chacin comes through and delivers a win and then we go home and run off a bunch.
  9. Yeah, keeping Lyles out there is bad....I do not understand.
  10. The Cubs were going to score against the Brewers at some point. Hope the offense shows up again. Hendricks' command looks great early.
  11. Technically, Perez K'd, then Moose HBP'd, but I thoight the same thing. Good start!
  12. I feel a 6 in a row, 8 of 10 type of streak coming on. If we can beat the Pirates, the rest of the schedule is not that bad. I think we get both at Wrigley this week and 2 from STL.
  13. Yeah, Cain leaving last night seemed odd. Thought he might sit today with the off day coming. Hope it is just a minor thing. Agree that today feels big, despite having already won the series. Going six up on the Rockies with fewer than 50 left would be a nice step toward the postseason.
  14. Without TV tonight. CC just wanting to give Cain a few innings off, or did he look a little off during that last K?
  15. Aside from wanting to post right after coolhandluke, I think these two points are interesting. Maybe Phillips becomes that player, but he wasn't going to do it in Milwaukee, and other teams valued that accordingly. KC gets some credit for getting that value, but I just think that means this trade can work for both parties. It doesn't have to be zero sum. I also like that DS doesn't seem committed to just one strategy. He may have an overriding philosophy about player value, but he is willing to think laterally and avoid dogmatic thinking. I like that about him. He doesn't need to win according to one set of rules. He is willing to look at all sorts of angles, and I think that is important in Milwaukee.
  16. I am on record as liking Phillips and will be sad to see him go. That said, Broxton is a very similar player to me and has a bit more of a track record. Maybe the FO sees something in Keon's approach lately that gives them faith in him going forward. Reality is, there wasn't room for Keon and Brett on this roster or really any roster through 2020. Moose should be a Miller Park monster. I would like him to be around for 2019 too, though 15mil seems too high. I don't think the Crew sold a lot of the future, and they got better offensively. Lots of question marks, but I take the risk to find out if Shaw can play 2B.
  17. While I agree that Arcia had 3 pretty bad ABs last night, the last two featured balls he hit pretty darn hard. Maybe it's easy to say that after a win, but I'm not as discouraged as I was after about the fifth inning. Edit: I see that this was pointed out by others above. Apologies for the repetition.
  18. Thought the same thing. Maybe send him back to AAA to get stretched out Sorry if this is just wrong, but isn't Burnes going to hit innings limits too? I thought that was part of the BP move and then he gets ready to move to the rotation next year. Soria makes today's team better. Losing Medeiros maybe makes a team two years fron now worse, but at least it is at a replaceable position, assuming Kodi doesn't become a starter. There are lots of Perez's around, so good luck to him but not worried long-term. If he becomes a star, oh well, and it won't be for 5 years.
  19. Awesome. Saladino looked like he was basically just trying to get it to an OF, and Cain shows why. Complete the sweep!
  20. Apparently everyome shifts Cain up the middle but the Nationals. Sort of untelated, but Martinez made some weird managerial moves last night I thought...
  21. I was thinking of PHing for Junior too. Instead hits one that looked way gone off the bat. Get some runs here!
  22. Brad Miller does not seem like the answer at 2nd... I still just have a feeling this is a game the Crew ends up winning. Don't know why. Will probably be wrong. Hanging with it anyway.
  23. Don't really get being down on the Yelich trade. Yelich is going to be an elite OBP guy at least, probably all the way through 2022. To get him DS traded 2 OFs with question marks (even if Brinson explodes, I can hear the complaints about his K rate now), a pitcher a tier or 2 below our 4 best guys now, and a MI who is a year or two away. I do that deal every single time. Yelich is consistent, contolled, and valuable, and OF is the deepest part of the system. Regression from Shaw, Arcia, and Pina (not to mention Santana) is really what's making this team look bad. Maybe that was predictable, but Stearns should get credit for Aguilar, and Dubon got hurt. Otherwise, he might be another success. The Crew is still ahead of schedule.
  24. I get the sentiment that the Crew should stand pat, but if Keon (who I like) is part of the price for an improvement, be it Dozier or a reliever or whatever, I don't see the downside. We shouldn't overvalue the wild card, but I do think analytics undervalue it. You can't win it if you're not there. Again, Keon's skillset is interesting, but it has been for a few years. What value does he bring to the organization right now that Phillips doesn't? Both of them feel like 4th outfielder types with about an equal chance of turning into average MLB regulars.
  25. Keon has been a bright spot, even during this losing streak. He isn't hitting well slash line wise, but he is walking a lot and showing off a seemingly improved approach. He has value for this team, though I still like Phillips' upside a bit more, or maybe just the extra control. Wouldn't be surprised to see one of those guys go in whatever move DS comes up with. I will be a bit sad either way, but I don't think the team needs both, especially with two-thirds of the OF locked in for a while.
