  1. Going to be cold and windy in NY. We will see who starts. I am sure Braun gets the day off. Cain too? Hoping for a series win and a 4-2 road trip.
  2. Agreed completely. I think the April results are misleading, but I hope not.
  3. 14 games in, the Cubs rotation is good and a healthy Rizzo makes their lineup tough. But I don't see an NL Central roster that terrifies me. Every team has pretty big flaws if you ask me. Hang around, get healthy, and the division is there. Would help if Darvish, Q, and Lester make the Cubs rotation a money pit. Not out of the question.
  4. This. I think the story is the Brewers lime their pitching and only want to add the top-end guys. Like it or not, we will see hoe it plays out over 2-3 yrs.
  5. Hope it is just something he does. Thames did the same thing last year at various points, and then we found out about his leg issues. Speaking of Thames, he looks much better to me this year. If Cain or Santana need a day or two, having him play the OF once or twice would not be awful (much as he doesn't belong there long-term), especially with Aguilar deserving ABs.
  6. I agree with Cain looking old not because of production. He has been fine. I am a little concerned his stride, though. He seems to go hands-on-knees a lot and generally grimace while running the bases and even the OF. Maybe just dinged up, but still. He does not LOOK durable to me right now, and while that's totally subjective, it's more troubling than his numbers.
  7. Um...I am looking at Guerra's first two pitches to Pena and seeing two balls? I'm sorry. I'm not trying to nitpick single pitches, but sometimes umpires just confuse me. Has anyone ever really analyzed the accuracy of these K-zone boxes? I get that it's like a serious physics/philosophy conundrum to actually know, with precision, where an object locates itself in physical space (and certainly the fluidity of the strike zone makes things even harder), but I would just be generally curious to see data on sources of error or how these things attempt to measure their own precision. Something like a confidence interval would be useful. Okay, rant over.
  8. I don't like Braun, Perez, Santana as an outfield either, but it's one game in April. With guys banged up, needing a fifth starter, and wanting an additional arm in the pen, I don't really see a better option.
  9. Thanks, Patrick. I was content with radio too, but it is worth a shot to watch. Went to bed after the Brewers half of the seventh last night thinking loss. Still have a bad taste from seeing the recap. Glad this gets underway at noon to try and remedy that. I feel good about the offense getting going. Warmer air may help. Hope Guerra is sharp. Always worse to lose before an off day I think, though this off day is more needed than most. Santana is due for a blast. I say the Crew brings the homer bats today. Edit: with Phillips optioned, Perez in center today one would think.
  10. Wow. I was way off. That doesn't look good against Martinez, but baseball is random. I guess I think the bottom of the order might be pretty good? Seriously stretching for hope here.
  11. Do we see Villar or Sogard tonight? Villar has good numbers against Martinez. Maybe we get both, and Arcia sits? I will say: Thames Santana Braun Shaw Pina Phillips Villar Arcia Suter
  12. I think the idea of DS wanting to move Santana is right. For me, the question then becomes about whether not moving him makes Cain/Yelich a mistake. I don't think so. This team seems to have a lot of faith in Davies, Anderson, and Nelson. If you think Chacin is capable, which I do, then you are looking at 4 or 5 young guys and hoping one pans out this year and one more by 2019 or 2020. That gives you a strong rotation for the next three seasons. Thinking of it that way, it really doesn't make sense to add Cobb or Lynn or even Jake A. That just commits way too much $ for a guy who is a big question mark. Maybe Nelson is weaker or Davies loses velo too, but there isn't as much sunk cost there if that happens. I look at it like this: if you add a top starter, that is making this year and next the time to compete. It makes things riskier with a roster that is still really young. As is, Cain and Yelich are the kind of moves that make the team more competitive now and preserve roster talent. (Especially re: pitching) for 2020 and beyond. Maybe it doesn't work out. But if you think highly of Anderson, Davies, and Nelson, then Chacin and no big FA pitching makes sense to me.
  13. Criticizing the OP for raising the issue seems a little unfair, especially when the post itself is pretty careful about framing this as a hypothetical. There is a lot of negativity around here and plenty of fan overreaction, but other than the thread title being a little eye-catchy, nothing here suggests something that should be mocked to me. I do think others are right that the answer is close to never. Braun is here through 2020 unless he turns into CC and puts up an 0 fer 75 or something. That ball he hit to Heyward yesterday was smoked.
  14. I never liked Contreras. Just seems perpetually angry. I don't care much for Perez's antics either, but at least he seems to be having fun.
  15. 5-5 with a -15 run differential. Given the injuries and the tough early schedule, this team really just need to hang around until mid-June. I like the cliche about not being able to win a pennant in April but definitely being able to lose it. This team is nowhere near losing it, even with another bad week. Of course, I see the offense getting it going and the Crew at least splitting the road trip. Hope for more!
  16. I get the concern, but some of this could be April sloppiness too. The Brewers have played 9 games. 6 have been against two expected playoff teams. The early schedule is really tough. I would really happy with 16-14 in April.
  17. That is...wow. At least Baez hit it hard....
  18. Yeah, the issue is just that it is not any fun to play these games. It's great when visiting fans travel and interact, but fan etiquette says you shouldn't jump around and throw it in your section's face when your visitors do something great. Cubs people do that way too much because of this aura of lovability, and it makes everything feel antagonistic and competitive and personal, and it shouldn't be.
  19. I would be interested in a market size realignment the next time one happens. Seems worth discussing at least. Milwaukee, Pitt, Cincy, MN, and KC would be an awesome division. Throw in Colorado, Cleveland, and Detroit or the White Sox if you want 8-team divisions.
  20. Bad defense and soft contact. Not a game this team had any business winning (Cain's misplayed fly ball, outhit, Cubs lose a hard luck challenge and strand a ton of base runners) anyway, but still no fun to have the bases empty with a lead in the ninth and only two outs to get and come up short. We wil see what tomorrow brings. I am thinking a 7-2 Brewers win, and I would take 6-4 and run.
  21. According to McCalvy tweet, CK says he is hoping 4 to 6 weeks. Sounds like MRI revealed less damage than initially thought, though I think a lot of folks initially thought season ender, so that is a totally relative indicator of severity. Still, good news. CK looking at a mid-June return at latest and barring setbacks. Not a world-ender, and maybe the saved innings help late in the year. I hope they do, and the Crew manages to stay in contention.
  22. The 2011 team was 0-4 and 14-20. They were middling around .500 until about mid July. 2011 is such a great reference point. In my head, the May Prince walk off kicked the team into high gear and the T. Plush winner in June solidified contention, but you are right that they slid back before the AS break. Crazy how long a season is, and somehow I forget it every opening week. Looking forward to watching this lineup go to work! It starts tonight!
  23. After 7 games last year: 2-5. Opening Day starter on DL after trying to bunt. Peralta in the rotation. Feliz closing. I will take 4-3 with this roster any day.
  24. I am most annoyed by the fact tbat the Cubs can spend 184 million dollars on a defense first outfielder, and we have to he concerned about signing Cain for 5/80.
  25. I just want to reiterate (I made this point in the original Chacin thread) that, though PetCo has the reputation of being a pitcher's park, that is at least a little misleading. Tbe Fangraphs park factors series from mid last year actually called it "the most misunderstood" MLB stadium. Just a FWIW when considering Chacin. I am not worried after two starts in April, one against his former and one against a pretty loaded lineup (the Cards are going to hit; we will we see boe the SP holds out and how Matheny'd they get WRT the BP). The velo dip is worth noting, but not a concern for me until end of April and probably more like mid- May. My biggest concern is really just the Cubs and Cards are stronger throughout the rotation.
