Also possible the Dodgers take advantage of a relatively light schedule (minus three games with the Padres) and get on a roll to catch us for the 1 seed. DBacks and Padres have been scuffling a bit, but outside shot they turn things around and the Cubs have a rough go of it, too. Still plenty of ways to avoid them in the postseason. Would enjoy the divisional round a lot more if it's not against them. -
Yes. And throw in the heat and Miz being a high-effort pitcher, and there's a little bit of a weird factor tonight, for sure. The conditions are going to be difficult for even someone as amazing as our ace. His one weakness is the propensity for the home run ball, so I'm not as confident as I normally am. All that said, the Brewers get to hit in the same conditions, against worse pitchers up and down the roster. So. Let's hope they approach their ABs well and we get a result more in line with last night than the night before.

Right where you want to be. Grabbed a win out of the two less favorable pitching matchups, and now you've got your best two guys going in a spot where one win does just fine. Be very nice if Henderson goes for the series win tomorrow. That bullpen chart is a little bit concerning, considering it might be tough to bring Uribe and Romero out for back-to-backs fresh off the IL, but maybe less so for Romero, whose injury wasn't at all arm related and who's also a rental. Patrick hasn't looked himself, but he should be available, as should Ashby and Megill, with Anderson not a bad option for a guy who's no one's first choice. Ideal scenario is Miz goes 7. We'll see how he handles the adrenaline. The one concern is maybe some command issues given the circumstances. Good prep for playoff baseball.

This is a really, really big spot for Abner after a long layoff. Not sure I trust his command. Hopefully he can come back after two wild ones.

Major, major job by Jojo. Made good pitch, after good pitch and dealt with a ton of bad luck. WE WON THE DUSTY MAY TRADE!!!

It depends on why you watch baseball. I think everyone understands that there's a certain kind of frustration in watching a very successful team repeatedly fail to advance to the World Series. I remember the frustration of watching a team fail to have a winning season for a decade. I FAR prefer the former to the latter. I also prefer the day-to-day progress of watching a team compete for a long-haul title over the peak emotional intensity of October. It's all relative. Neither approach is better. I sometimes just think the "World Series or bust" folks get a little too hastily dismissive of a different kind of baseball fandom. Personally, I think wanting to win the NL pennant over everything is setting yourself up for disappointment and losing the process for the end result.

Nice to get a run there, anyway. Cubs still have to get a lot of outs. Put up a zero, and get this guy third time through.

I think most people do? It goes both ways. Playoff baseball doesn't have to be a referendum on a franchise either. We're allowed to evaluate seasons without focusing entirely on the World Series.

That inning was tough to watch. Promising start followed by Contreras swinging at ball four (and then popping out) and Chourio just trying to do too much. After that, you give up a walk and then a lucky little swinging bunt single. Next thing you know, it's 3-0. Even bigger, for me, is that, in 13 innings in absolutely prime offensive conditions, the Brewers have scored 3 runs and generally looked awful at the plate. I know everyone's upset about losing to the Cubs, blah blah blah, we're manufacturing drama because we're basically assured a playoff berth and still have a strong lead in the Central, but the lack of slug has always been the question for this team. It's been a bad week for the "the offense is good" crowd (not ripping on that crowd at all, just pointing out that these performances, in big games, are exactly what the critics worry about).

I remember, during our Cy Burnes years, really hoping the wind would be blowing out because our offense wasn't good unless one or two guys hit it far. We lost a good number of April series in wind-blowing-in conditions. Now, of course, it's the opposite. Our offense is basically wind-proof, and their lineup hits it far. Tough luck for us. Supposed to be another good offensive night tonight, so Gasser will need to keep it in the park as much as possible. I thought there was a good chance of being down 0-2 in the series with Mis and Henderson taking the hill, so I think grabbing this one would go a long, long way to feeling just fine about this series. Good news is, even the worst possible outcomes for the Brewers still involve being up quite a bit in the division with runway running out. Hang with 'em, and bring the bats.

I don't really understand artificially limiting how many innings they can go, but that's slightly better, I guess. If a team wants to punt in the 4th inning, I think you should let them.

Can position players really only pitch one inning? That seems dumb.

So many mental and physical errors. I guess good to get it out of the system early. I think the Yelich AB in the 4th is the absolute lowlight for me so far. I'm not a Yelich critic, in particular. But that AB was awful, when you're dealing with a chance to maybe get back in it.

Playing the Cubs is never fun because we have to load all kinds of meaningless crap onto single games. It's why I hated playing them in the playoffs (and why I'd rather get the 2 seed than the 1 if it means avoiding them for another round). Certain times, it just means too much. All of which is to say, this game doesn't matter. The Brewers played horribly. May as well throw Gary Sanchez for 4 innings and call it a day. If you can at least make the Cubs work a little bit, that'll be a moral victory. The big thing to be concerned about, for me, is simple: If the Brewers can't hit homers on a night like tonight, they're really going to struggle to hit homers. This has always been the worry, so it's not exactly new information, but still. I hope somebody reminds the team in powder blue that they're the big, bad wolves of the Central, having dominated the division and beaten the Cubs in the playoffs last year.

Between Harrison just grooving it, Hamilton being unable to react quite quickly enough, Bauers burning a dumb early challenge, Frelick and Hamilton NOT challenging, and Mitchell getting thrown out on the bases, it sure looks like the Brewers haven't gotten off the bus yet.

Yeah, Vaughn is a nice power option off the bench with the three lefties is a row in the middle of the order. Against a lefty, he'll play. You can either put him at first for Bauers or DH for Yelich. Just more options that way than the other.

0-4: You're still okay, but you've let the Cubs back in it and are going to have to play well down the stretch for the bye. 1-3: Kept the door open just a crack, but avoided the worst outcome. 2-2: Enough to put the division away. 3-1: Game over. 4-0: Putting the Cubs' playoff position in dicey territory. The forecast for tonight will likely make for a high O/U. A good home run night advantages the Cubs lineup, but Harrison misses A LOT more bats than Holmes, so maybe that mitigates things a little bit. Holmes also has a slightly higher walk rate. This feels like the toughest matchup on paper, but all of these games will be tough. The Brewers bullpen advantage may come into play tonight. Here's hoping they score throughout the game.
