The Braves just put up a 6-game winning streak while we went 4-2. I'm not really sure what else the Brewers can do. If they continue to rack up wins against their brutal schedule, all credit to them. In the same stretch you mentioned, we picked up ground on the Dodgers, a team we do own the tiebreaker over. It's going to be very, very hard for BOTH of those teams to pass us. It might happen, but if it does, I'm not going to look back at this week and say "that week we won two series against the Mets and Rangers was where it all went wrong." These are the things that happen in a baseball season. -
May seems like an NLCS kind of option, should they get there. Those middle three games usually require a 4th starter, even if you're throwing him in Game 4 or 5 and just hoping he gets through 3 or 4. Honestly, the idea of Dusty May (a competent starting pitcher who happens to be somewhere between 4th and 6th best on this staff) having much to do with our playoff performance, either way, seems far-fetched. He's not that kind of guy. So far, he's been...fine in the regular season, which is what you were acquiring him for (and maybe hoping he got really hot and forced you to roster him). There's a lot of factors that we'll end up evaluating that trade on, and May's performance here in August and September is probably the least of the major ones. If he'd shoved (and he still might) in his time here, you could say "good start," but him just being a so-so back-end rotation arm so far is not going to influence my opinion either way. For me, it really comes down to Romero and Frias/Ragsdale. Romero's the leverage guy you hope can get you big outs in big games (probably in the 5th or 6th), and the other two guys have a low, but reasonable as far as prospects go chance of being impact outfielders. We can all hope the Brewers side of this makes the answer easy, but it probably won't, and it certainly wasn't going to based on 4 Dusty May starts. The answer comes in 2-5 years when we have a better idea of the two OFs.

Not a great performance, but today was about as much of a gravy day as it gets. Let's bring the bats to Wrigley, and take the series. We win 3 there, and this race is over.

Well, he'd rather go on the IL than be sent down, right? Good work by Wilson. Saved the pen, kept things fresh headed into Chicago.

Dicey from a fan's perspective, sure, but it's hard to expect a team to have a week's worth of a lead for the bye with 25 games left. The fact that the Brewers have a 3-game lead on two teams (holding the tiebreaker over one), one of whom plays a murderous schedule, is pretty much the best we could have hoped for at this point in the year.

Setting up well to let Wilson throw a couple of innings before he's probably replaced. Certainly a silver lining if you can go into the Cubs series fresh. Worst case scenario, we pick up a game this week. If the Reds can help us out, we pick up two, even assuming there's no comeback. Your best three guys are starting that series, and your bullpen should be fresh, so that's a positive situation in a lot of ways. Though, watching Turang do things like that, it does seem maybe we're looking ahead to that bus trip a little too much...

At this point, I trust him more in that spot (and to give you a better AB in on average, across all situations) than Lara. But it's close. I think the bigger issue is burning Vaughn in the 5th inning. But if you're just going to do it one hitter later, this time with the bases clean, I'm as stumped as anyone.

Braves win to potentially get to within 3 of the Brewers, same for the Dodgers (though they haven't won yet). Good news for the Crew is that the Braves, after three games vs SF/Washington to start the week, then go Phillies, Rays, Phillies, Cubs, Astros. If they get the bye, they'll have earned it.

After watching Vaughn pinch-hit to lead off the 6th, I have reconsidered, lol. If you were planning to use him already, just do it then. EDIT: I know Murph will counter with L/R stuff, but that's just putting too much stock into platoon splits...

I get the argument for letting Sal hit. Still early, you're trailing, and going with with Lara impacts two more ABs. Maybe you save Vaughn for another situation. But, yeah, definitely one where there's a compelling case the other way.

Obviously not what you wanted from May. Good news is, he was the guy you wanted to skip in the Cubs series. Now you can. For their part, the Brewers look like they'll miss Shota, which is helpful.

May has been a quality start or blow up kind of pitcher all year. If anyone can get consistency out of him, it's probably the Brewers. If folks hate the trade, I get it, but they really should answer the following question: what would May and Romero have to do to make you feel good about it? Without an answer to that, it's just hating to hate, or hating on principle (the latter of which is okay too, but then complaining about every May start isn't worth much--you'd hate the trade no matter what).

I think Naylor will be the choice, but it's closer than some think re: him and Lockridge. Naylor would basically exist as an emergency backup plan, allowing more ABs for El Gary (who then can be pinch-run for without fear). Lockridge can take ABs (during which he'll see pitches) AND pinch-run, plus he's a good defender. I think Lockridge would contribute more ON HIS OWN, but Naylor might help the team more in giving a good hitter more ABs. It also depends on how Bauers' shin splints impact his OF ability. I think they'll go with Naylor, but, Lee Corso style, closer than the experts think...- 29 replies

It does appear that the Cubs game will be a wind-blowing-out special. Cubs with a 4-run advantage, but there's value in simply making that troubled pitching staff throw a lot of guys, so let's hope the Reds can at least keep applying pressure. Bigger, obviously, to take care of our own business. Hoping we can take this series today and go for a 5-1 week tomorrow.

Say this for the Brewers they sure do tend to respond to adversity. It's easy to laugh about the unquantifiable nature of "grit," but it's simple enough to see it when you watch it every day.

This is the part I find baffling. The only explanation I can think of is that the Brewers maybe believe the whole thing is basically random, and you lose as much by having guys think about it too hard than just by letting them gut it. But then you'd think you'd at least give situational guidance. Will be interesting to follow.

Somewhat on the topic, that 0-1 to Chourio is why I'm hoping we can hold the line at ABS challenges for awhile. That pitch is an ABS strike, but it really shouldn't be a real one when you watch it come in and see how badly it missed. CHOURIO!

We talk a lot about challenges and blame individuals for them (which is largely fair), but I think the bigger problem is the Brewers don't seem to have a challenge strategy. There's no real philosophy there, and it seems to result in guys being basically no better than random. If anything, it seems like the catchers are empowered to challenge at will, and everyone else is treated as "you better be right." Part of the reason it sticks out is that the Brewers are so good at having coherent approaches in literally every other aspect of the game. My money is on them getting there with ABS, but I feel like you could do worse than just giving guys simple rules. Don't challenge until there's two strikes, for example. Or only challenge after the 4th to start and then not until the 6th if you lose. Or only with runners on base. I don't even care what the specific rules are, but there's enough data by now that you'd think a couple of easy heuristics would help. Doubt they could hurt. EDIT: You could even tailor this to individual guys. Give them parts of the plate (you only challenge inside/high/etc., depending on which pitches the player tends to see best).

I think this is a concern for everyone. I also feel like the Brewers are doing absolutely everything they can to prevent it, especially because if you IL the guy or shut him down, you just risk rust. The optimist in me will bet on adrenaline carrying Mis through the playoffs.

Noticed teams doing this more and more, and I really don't like it. Just seems common courtesy to give an afternoon start, especially when one of the teams has to travel right after. I'm sure the Brewers have done this at some point (though I think we're generally pretty good about it), so it isn't about it hurting us. The whole virtue of baseball is getting to play a lot of games during weekday afternoons. It's fun and gives folks a reason to take the day or pass the time while doing traditional work hour stuff. This grab for every night game first pitch (presumably to increase attendance) just feels like a small instance of ruining a great thing by trying to grab just a little extra money in a billion-dollar industry.

Pretty listless performance yesterday all around. Getting to the long point of the season, guys banged up, etc. Cubs losing two in a row and 4 of 6 helps take the sting out a bit. Would be a big day for May to go 7 and the offense to let Hall finish it. Going up at least six heading back home would really be nice prior to the Cubs series.
