That sinker Santos throws is hard but it seems a bit flat. I'm expecting Santos will pitch the 9th too, I think we'll get some good swings on him.

He allowed a run, but he had a very effective inning. I bet if you check xba on those 3 "hits" it's very very low. There's certainly an argument to give uribe higher leverage chances over peguero, but it's not an egregious error.

I think using Peguero/Uribe/Chafin/Milner back to back can mostly be avoided as long as we don't have a starter implosion. Even a 5 inning start, we probably can avoid back to backs for a bit with the schedule.

I'll go against the grain here and say I don't really like having set roles in the bullpen. I kinda think you want to have your relievers power ranked to a degree, but also making sure they don't pitch too much or too little. As much as I'm heavily heavily critical of CC, one of his greatest strengths is balancing reliever usage. He may be the best in MLB at this. Our reliever situation right now is quite good. I think Williams is the closer(the only set role i really don't mind) and Payamps is the clear next best relief option. Beyond him, I view Peguero, Chafin, Uribe, Milner as all fairly equal and all very good options right now. I would be comfortable with any of them pitching the 7th, or the 8th if one of Williams/Payamps isn't available or could use a day off. I think this article overexaggerates a bit how he's pitched over the last few weeks...he's allowed runs 3 of his last 8 outings, and in all 3 cases he was pitching back to back. With the options we have and upcoming days off, I think you probably just avoid pitching him back to back for a bit. I'm not super concerned about this small sample, unless there's a change in his stuff from a month ago I think you continue to roll him as one of the good options. On that note, what a problem to have where Wilson is a super solid long reliever...we have one mop up guy(currently mejia I think)...and then 6 true quality arms that can all pitch important spots effectively. This can get even better if Ashby comes back and then if/when 1 starter shifts to relief for potential postseason baseball.

that's such a bad way to lose a game. that was as routine as routine gets, and the 1b honestly had a decent shot at picking that as well. Santana/Tellez make that play almost all the time. not complaining even the slightest bit...but man if colorado had more to play for that would be a gross loss.

It's honestly a bit annoying to allow a run that way, but at the end of the day they hit a double with starting the inning with a guy on second and we only allowed 1. we have a great chance to at least tie if not win this game right here.

He actually played it really well off the wall. Way way above average. Simple human error on the bobble.

1 run when you start a runner at 2nd is a pretty decent result. Wilson is a low K pitcher, and good contact once or weak contact twice probably scores that run.

I like Wilson a lot, but hard to imagine him getting through this inning clean. I'll be very happy if he allows only 1.

As much as that step back cost us a run at this moment, I love the decision by Frelick to take a step back to 2nd. He would have prevented an inning ending double play if that guy can jump 6 inches higher.

The 2 games they scored big, both times the other team put in a bad reliever or relievers that got torched for a lot of runs. Not to minimize what they did too much, because it's still an MLB or at least an AAAA caliber pitcher...but it can be a good thing to get those kinds of atbats for a team struggling to hit. One good atbat of making real good contact might be enough to spark a struggling hitter.

My point regarding Yelich, going to the extreme you don't want him playing 162 games...even if he DH's some. I can understand not giving him the day off, but this wouldn't be a bad time for one. We are currently in the middle of a fair amount of games in a row, but have a fair amount of days off over the next few weeks.

This is my hope as well for the infield. I also think it wouldn't be a bad idea to give yelich a day off today. 1 for 10 career against Freeland, and I'm sure he could use a day. Frelick in left, Taylor in right, Wiemer in center, one of Canha/Caratini DH.

I expect Counsell to play completely uncreative checkers as he has the last few years. I anticipate Frelick and Turang on the bench. A lineup something like Yelich, Contreras, Santana, Adames, Canha, Monasterio, Anderson, Taylor, Wiemer. And then after the game he'll shrug his shoulders and say "why can't we hit lefties" not able to see that he benched 2 of our currently best hitters for no good reason.

600 OPS Turang is still a valuable player. I like the detail in here a lot, but I want to point out August is still a smaller pool than the other months you've identified...and in August he's faced a lot of pretty bad pitchers as our schedule has been soft. Credit is due for hitting them for sure, I'll be interested to see if the mechanics continue to produce once he faces tougher pitchers.

That's the conventional approach before the runner on second thing started. This probably does vary by team. In the Brewers case this season, I would strongly argue you are much better off running out Payamps, Uribe, or Chacin in the 9th and Williams in the 10th if available. Those 4 relievers all have a relatively equal chance of pitching a clean inning with no runners on base. Williams may be slightly ahead, but it's real close. As for the 10th, Williams has a much better shot at pitching a clean inning with his high k numbers than any of the other 3. There's also value to not using Williams at all if Uribe can throw a clean 9th in a tie game and the Brewers close it out in the bottom half. I would say this is probably situationally dependent...I could see Williams making sense in the 9th if he hasn't pitched in 4-5 days or something. I would bet a deep analysis of this would show that we win more using the closer in the 10th and another high end reliever in the 9th. I tried looking for analysis of this situation and couldn't find anything easily on the internet. So I can't exactly support my opinion.
