  1. Houser can’t get the ball over the plate and he’s in trouble again.
  2. Brewers are hitting like last weekend’s Indians. 7 hits in their last 22 innings.
  3. Peterson has to make that catch. Looks like he misjudged it and got a bad jump, but still was there to get his glove on it. Cubs putting the pressure on Houser early.
  4. The offense has wake up from its 4 day vacation and light this team up this weekend. While the Cubs offense has been pretty good recently, their pitching remains horrible. The Cubs have surrendered double digit runs 19 times this year (including 15 runs last night) and 14 of those 19 games came after they peaked with the combined no hitter in late June that brought them to 42-33 and tied with the Brewers for first place. At that point they had scored more runs and allowed fewer runs than the Brewers. Losing 18 of their next 20 led to the trading deadline fire sale. Those double digit performances are not just 10’s and 11’s either. 15 of them involve giving up 13 runs or more.
  5. Counsell said on Tuesday that Garcia’s back spasms were not serious and that he expected him back in the lineup tonight. So many players are at less than 100% at this stage of the season that you couldn’t field a team if you put all of them on the IL. The Brewers are fortunate to be in a position to give players more time off than they would if they were in a dogfight for a playoff spot. But sitting one for a couple of weeks before the playoffs is just as likely, if not more likely, to make him rusty when the playoffs start (after 4 more days of rest after the season ends). I trust that the coaching staff and team trainers have a good handle on how much rest a player needs and how serious their injuries are.
  6. And just like that it’s 7-7 by the 4th inning. You’ve got the reverse jinx mastered lately! The fact that the Phillies are now ahead 10-7 doesn’t change the facts that the Phillies bullpen game didn’t work well or that the Cubs are scoring a lot of runs.
  7. Some interesting series in the NL playoff races this weekend as the Padres beat the Giants to tighten up both the NL West and Wild Card races. Padres at Cardinals Dodgers at Reds Braves at Giants Phillies at Mets Although they pounded him last time they faced him, I’m not upset to see Hendricks pitching against the Phillies tonight because I see him as the Cubs starter most likely to give the Brewers trouble. The Phillies bullpen game is not working tonight as they are trailing 7-0 in the third inning. The Cubs have been scoring a lot of runs lately.
  8. I’m quite sure he meant that he would be concerned about how the Brewers were playing IF they lost 6 of 7 to the Cardinals. I think a lot of us would be unhappy about that.
  9. The Brewers have a 12.5 game lead with 16 games remaining. What you are suggesting is not an absolute statistical impossibility, but it is definitely toeing that line. I will get borderline nervous about the division if we don't clinch this weekend AND the cards 4 game sweep us next week. I'll also be incredibly nervous about what we'll do in the playoffs considering that will be pretty embarrassing this close to the playoffs. All that is pretty unlikely though. Most likely people should have their celebratory beer ready for this Sunday or Monday. Cards play the Padres this weekend and I'm kinda expecting SD to get 2 of 3. For the Brewers to clinch this weekend they’d have to get the “preferred” result in 5 of the 6 games (Cubs-Brewers and Padres-Cards). Considering that the Cubs have gotten a little more competitive than when the Brewers played them right after the fire sale (though the Giants disposed of them pretty easily last weekend) I’m really not expecting it to happen on Sunday. But, if they can get just 3 preferred results out of 6, that would set up the first of 4 potential clinchers on Monday. If the Brewers don’t clinch the division during the Cardinals series next week, that would be aggravating on two levels. I don’t think anyone wants to see the Brewers drag this out, and if they don’t clinch by then it would mean that the Cardinals have taken a commanding position in the wild card race. Monday should be an interesting day.
  10. Looks like the magic number to clinch the division won’t be moving today as the Cards score 5 in the first against the punchless Mets. Nothing tomorrow either as both teams are idle.
  11. This might be payback from the baseball gods for laughing at the Indians offensive ineptitude over the weekend. Do you think the Tigers have had any other consecutive games this year in which they’ve allowed a total of 1 run on 6 hits in 19 innings, including two with a free runner on second to start the inning? The Tigers recent success has been based more on hitting than lockdown pitching, but the Brewers have made them look good these two days.
  12. Very true but brewerfan posters have never been able to detect sarcasm without the blue, just the way it is, not going to change now. Just like others can’t accept some in game venting for what it is. My disappointment right now is that my hopes of seeing the Brewers clinch the division at a game we’re attending on Sunday are fading pretty quickly. The next game on the 10 pack is the following Saturday against the Mets. They better have it clinched by then because if they haven’t it will mean that the Cardinals will be riding high in the wild card race.
  13. This one went down the drain in a hurry. Time to come home and get down to the business of wrapping up the division.
  14. That’s kind of simplistic. Adames didn’t play last week and the offense was fine. This is just crappy hitting.
  15. *sad trombone Or a quick 2-1 loss. This inning is going to shorten Woodruff’s day.
  16. Like the last game in the Giants series it looks like the players are anxious to get the game over so they can head home. Maybe they can get a quick 1-0 win.
