  1. It’s going to take more than 2 runs to wiping this one. The Cardinals offense is smoking.
  2. Or else the Cardinals decided to try to take advantage of the Brewers problems against left handed starters, and Lester’s past success against the Brewers, to try to get a jump in the series. If Garcia and Cain are still out the Brewers will be stuck with Bradley and Peterson in the OF.
  3. Yep…….anything can happen in the playoffs……I’m going to appreciate this team no matter what the result in the post season. They have given us tons of great memories and a very enjoyable summer. If the Brewers don’t win the World Series, I guarantee that there will be posters on this site who will come out with variations on the theme that a baseball season has 1 winner and 29 losers. I won’t be one of them. I’m a firm believer that good and great seasons can have disappointing endings. If the Brewers get eliminated, there will be disappointment, especially if they get eliminated in an especially aggravating manner. Think Packers-Seahawks in 2014. Or getting eliminated by the Cardinals.
  4. I know that logically the reason we have better odds than the Dodgers is because they are baking in the potentiality of them having to overcome a one game playoff, but I don't care. That's still kind of a strange feeling for us to be the odds-on "favorite", as it were, even if it's only for this moment in time. I have been quietly hoping for a Dodgers/Giants game 163 which the Giants will host, plus the one game wild card. How about a Braves-Phillies Game 163 for the NL East while we’re at it?
  5. If the teams behind the Cardinals are looking to the Brewers to play spoiler, they are probably in for a disappointment. Given their desire to rest players with minor injuries and to manage workloads for their pitchers heading into the playoffs, I don’t see the Brewers winning more than 2 or 3 of their 7 games against the Cardinals. Once they win 2, hopefully this week, the Brewers are going to be more interested in looking out for themselves than playing spoiler. I’m sure the players that play will be going all out, but those players may not be the Brewers best for every situation. The Cubs are not a pushover, but they aren’t likely to win more than a couple against a motivated Cards team either. So, I would expect the Cards to win something like 9 of their last 14. That would make it real tough for the teams behind them to catch up without almost winning out.
  6. I don't recall anything indicating that Tellez's injury was potentially season-ending. I would think/hope that the beginning of the playoffs would be a worst-case schedule. The words “season ending” were not used, but they said that Tellez would be “reassessed” after two weeks. That would mean a reassessment sometime next week. That doesn’t leave a lot of time for him to play in any more regular season games or to be activated for the NLDS. Even if he isn’t ready for the NLDS he could be ready for a later round if the Brewers advance. We’ll see what the reassessment shows.
  7. When Tellez went on the IL they said it would be a minimum of two weeks. That would mean he won’t be back until at least next week if he’s able to come back at all.
  8. There are pics of him wearing #56 too, but it appears that he never wore it in the regular season. Maybe those would be spring training pictures before he ever made the major league roster. In those days that would be a pretty unusual number for a position player on the regular season roster.
  9. Stearns might feel like he has generally accomplished his goal here by building the Brewers into a consistent playoff participant. Maybe he’s one of those individuals who is more motivated by taking on a new challenge than operating in a comfortable environment. I really want to see what he can do with the core set of pitchers the Brewers have developed to beef up some of the soft spots in the everyday lineup.
  10. That might be tough the next few days with Strickland expected to go on paternity leave any day now.
  11. It’s been reported the TBD is Anderson. I think they’re trying to give Burnes the extra day of rest and do whatever possible to limit him from being gassed entering October. If they’re going with Anderson and Houser against Mikolas and Wainwright, the thought that the Brewers have the pitching advantage falls by the wayside. Whatever advantage the Brewers might have in the first two games is offset by the Cards advantage in the last two.
  12. I thought the Brewers were planning to go Peralta, Woodruff, Houser, Burnes against the Cardinals. Now I’m seeing Peralta, Woodruff, TBD, Houser. Is there a problem with Burnes or are they just not willing to use him on only 4 days rest?
  13. A pretty dreary performance today. You know your offense isn’t doing well when you have more DPs than hits for much of the game. Even if we assume that we aren’t going to see the first ever team to win a division race by winning its last 22 games in a row and/or the first team to blow one by losing its last 14, this next series is going to be a good playoff dress rehearsal for the Brewers. It’s an opportunity to show off their playoff credentials with their best pitchers lined up to face a team that is playing as well as anybody and is hungry to win more to lock up their playoff berth. The Brewers are going to have to show more offense than they have this week because they aren’t going to have the Cubs bullpen to help them salvage games.
  14. Looks like a SP change for the Cubs. Keegan Thompson is off the IL and will start today. I wonder if their plan is to pitch Thompson for a couple of innings, then come in with Morgan, a LHP who just came off the bereavement list. The Brewers lineup is loaded with lefties with Garcia, Cain, and Adames all out and they could struggle against a lefty. The Brewers could really use an early outburst against one of these bums the Cubs throw out there.
  15. The only numbers I remember for Thomas with the Brewers are 44, 3, and 20. He obviously would have given up 44 when Hank Aaron came to the Brewers in 1975. After the 1976 season he was traded to the Rangers and when he returned to the Brewers in 1978 he started with number 20. I don’t recall if someone else on the Brewers had 3 at that time or if he just wanted a different number.
  16. It started back in April right after the Cubs beat the Brewers 15-2 on a Friday afternoon at Wrigley.
  17. We’re going to the game today, so I’m expecting a vintage Sunday lineup. With Garcia and Cain sitting, but not on the IL, and 3 catchers on the roster, the options for second line position players are pretty limited. Bradley in CF is a virtual given, so that’s a black hole right there. I’m expecting to see Reyes for either Wong or Escobar as somebody gets a day off before the Cardinals series. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Maile starting either. I also wonder if Boxberger, Williams, and Hader will all be off limits so they aren’t used two days in a row (3 in Hader’s case) right before the Cards come in. I’d really like a win today to get the magic number down to 2 so that it will only take one win over the Cardinals to wrap up the division. But, if the Cubs score some runs early, I could see this turning into one of those white flag days with the back end of the bullpen filling innings. If it does, I’m sure the Cubs fans in attendance will act like their team has done something great. I wish I had a T shirt with some appropriate picture, like Bernie Brewer standing over a dead Bear, with the message “15-3, 11 in a row”. ETA: I didn’t see until now that Maile has been optioned and Lopes recalled. So, that probably means Narvaez catching today, but they can give two of Wong, Escobar, and Urias the day off and start Reyes and Lopes. ETA2- Happily, Wong, Escobar, and Urias are all in the lineup, so JBJ is the only real dead spot in the order. Not as good as having Garcia, Adames, and Cain but the best they can do under the circumstances.
  18. Analytics has already done that. In the world of COVID and cancellations, we better just celebrate stuff when it actually happens. Maybe I’m reading the wrong thing into it, but I took the analytics response as a play on the word “bunting”. You were referring to the red, white, and blue decorations that are brought out for the playoffs. I took the response as a reference to how analytics has taken laying down bunts out of the game of baseball.
  19. Cards win again. No division clinching until Monday at the earliest. Unless the Brewers win both tonight and tomorrow it will probably take two wins in that series to clinch. The Padres are not likely to help.
  20. Speaking of dumpster fire bullpens the Padres have one. Darvish with 7 shutout innings and Pagan gives it away.
  21. This revamped Cubs lineup has been scoring a lot of runs recently. The key is to take advantage of their pitching because it’s hard to beat them 2-1. It’s just harder to score a lot of runs with some of the team’s best hitters on the bench.
